멕시코 한인후손 초청연수에서 한국어 수업에 관한 질적 연구

Abstract

Courses for overseas Koreans conducted in Korea can be good opportunities in which they can experience Korea more closely. However there are not many studies on Korean class for overseas Koreans conducted in Korea. To make the Korean courses conducted in Korea for overseas Koreans which is gradually being increased through national assistance and fellowship training of various organizations a significant experience for them, their experiences in Korean classes must be understood and studies which define its meaning are essential. This study tries to find out the features of descendants of Koreans in Mexico as Korean learners and profoundly understand their experiences in Korean classes during a training course conducted in Korea through qualitative research. The participants of this study are 12 descendants of Koreans in Mexico who were selected to participate in the 'Vocational Training for descendants of Koreans in Mexico' promoted by OKF and trained by the International HRD center of HRD Korea. This study was conducted from September 26 of 2011 to February 21 of 2012 and the main method of data collection was participant observation and in-depth interviews. It was found that the learners who are descendants of Koreans in Mexico began to think more about their identity as a descendant of Koreans while learning Korean and experienced that their identity and confidence as descendants of Koreans became clearer and stronger. The process of their learning Korean is not different from Korean language classes for foreign beginners but the fact that they show changes in their identity such as thinking more about their identity as a descendant of Koreans, strengthening their identity among other changes which cannot be found in other foreign learners is a notable fact.;언어는 민족의 정체성과 사회문화적인 가치를 전달해 주는 중요한 도구이기 때문에 재외동포에 대한 한국어교육은 그들에게 자신의 정체성을 확인하고 한민족이라는 인식을 갖게 하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이를 인식하고 그 동안 정부와 한국어교육계는 재외동포를 위한 국내 연수를 진행함으로써 이들에게 한국을 더 가깝게 경험할 수 있는 기회를 주어왔다. 그러나 지금까지 이런 국내 연수에서 재외동포 한국어교육에 관한 연구는 많이 이뤄지지 못했다. 국가 차원의 지원과 여러 기관의 초청으로 점점 늘어나고 있는 재외동포를 위한 국내 연수에서 한국어교육이 그들에게 의미 있는 경험이 되기 위해서는 가르치는 현장에서 그들의 한국어 수업에 대한 경험을 이해하고 그 의미를 밝히려는 연구가 꼭 필요하다. 이 연구는 재외동포재단에서 추진하고 한국 산업인력공단에서 위탁 운영하는 ‘멕시코 한인후손 초청연수’에서 한국어 수업에 대한 질적 연구를 통해 멕시코 한인후손 학습자의 국내 연수 과정에서 한국어 수업에 대한 경험이 어떠하고 그 의미가 무엇인지를 심층적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이 연구의 연구 참여자는 ‘멕시코 한인후손 초청연수’에 선정되어 한국 산업인력공단 국제HRD센터에서 국내 연수를 받는 멕시코 한인후손 12명이며, 이들은 멕시코 재외공관의 추천을 받아 재외동포재단의 초청으로 한국에 오게 되었고, 평균 나이는 22세이고 성별은 남자가 4명, 여자가 8명이다. 이 연구의 주된 자료 수집 방법은 참여관찰과 심층면담이고 서술형 질문지와 집단면담을 보조적인 자료 수집 방법으로 하였다. 자료 수집 기간은 2011년 9월 26일부터 2012년 2월 21일까지이며 총 144시간의 한국어 수업과 7회의 문화 체험에 대한 관찰을 하고 이를 토대로 현장일지를 작성하였다. 이 연구를 통해 멕시코 한인후손 4세, 5세가 한국에서 연수중에 한국어를 배우면서 한국어 수업을 어떻게 인식하고 경험하는지와 그 의미가 무엇인지를 심층적으로 이해하게 되었으며, 그 과정에서 이들이 말로만 듣던 조상의 나라와 언어를 알아가면서 한인후손으로서의 정체성이 분명해지고 자신감을 갖게 되면서 정체성이 강화된다는 사실을 발견하였다. 멕시코 한인후손 학습자가 국내 연수에서 한국어를 배우는 과정은 다른 초급 외국인 학습자와 다를 바가 없었지만, 한국어를 배우는 과정에서 이들이 한인후손이라는 사실에 대해 더 많이 생각하게 되고 한인후손으로서의 정체성이 강해지면서 다른 외국인 학습자에게서 찾아볼 수 없는 정체성에서의 변화를 겪는다는 것은 주목할 만한 점이라고 할 수 있다.
