This study aims to closely examine the appropriation work of Richard Prince (1949-) in the viewpoint of deconstructive gesture to the major premise of modernism in the 20th century. Since the late 1970s, Prince showed a work taking the images of advertisements are from the existing magazines or books. And later he has been absorbed in a variety of appropriation work with the pop culture and high-class fine arts ranging from industrial objet and jokes to representative images in art history. Prince’s appropriation work has been greatly criticized so far in the inside and outside of the art circles causing the issues of originality and copyrights. However, this article viewed the work of Prince as a strategy of postmodernism that appeared since the mid-1970s after modernism, and examined the process of reconsidering and deconstructing the myth of modernism of originality, media purity and formalism. Since the 19th century until the mid-20th century, the modernism art continuously performed the experiments on forms with the consistent goal of 'autonomy of art'. This was based on the view of rational subject, which was the major premise of the Western modern philosophy of the 17th century, and was an attempt to escape the previous art practices that were immersed in the representational expressions or descriptive explanations of the external world. Therefore, the art in the period of modernism was considered as the symbol of the artist subject and true nature of the world, and created the myth of originality that means that the artist ‘is’ the work. In particular, Clement Greenberg, an American art critic, respected the rational cognitive system of human beings and established the art theory of formalism. And afterwards Michael Fried developed Greenberg’s theory and emphasized the media purity as a goal that art should aim for. However, this blind orientation to originality, media purity and formalism limited the fine arts to the two-dimensional plane canvas resulting in a self-sufficient form severed from the social and cultural context. Thus, the modernist art, which ran up to an empty form, came to the contradiction to touch with the impure area of daily life that it had denied so much. Prince, who made his debut in 1976, actively used the method of appropriation for criticizing the premises of modernism from various angles, along with the discussions of postmodernism which revived at that time. This is earlier than that of postmodern photographers or simulationism artists that appeared in the 1980s. Prince pulls down the traditional idea of artist, which has been represented by 'creativity', with recycling the images floating in the modern society, and strongly resists the myth of media purity with diverse media such as photographs, pictures, sculptures, and installations as the tools. In addition, his work, introduces the jokes of the times into the canvas and thereby reads the abstraction of formalism as a sort of text composing the social context. Through this tries, Prince reconsiders the myth of formalism of modernism. Since the 1980s, Prince was classified as ‘Pictures Generation’ together with Cindy Sherman, Sherrie Levine, Jack Goldstein and so on and emerged as the representative figure of appropriation art. These appropriation artists commonly took the methodology of post-structuralism as the basic position, and declared death to the consistent subject as the origin to grasp and make the true nature of the world. In this context, Prince takes the idea of artist with the method of appropriation, and demonstrates that the work is a text drawn from an external context. In particular, the sign of his strategy can be found in Marcel Duchamp who presented a new direction of fine arts with ready-made in the early 20th century. This study started from the assumption that the appropriation work of Richard Prince is deconstructing the traditional concept of art from various angles. The detailed analysis on his appropriation strategy informs that the work of Prince is a gesture that reconsiders and reflects on the myth of modernism, which came to an end contradicting itself. In this sense, Prince can be judged as a practical artist who realized the deconstructive spirit, which the arts shared since the mid-20th century. However, it cannot be concluded that he presents only a destructive gesture turning every value composing the world into nothing, just because his work involves the theme of ‘deconstruction’. Prince can be understood to have arranged the opportunity to deal with the end of modernism through appropriation and, at the same time, opened our eyes to the possibility of a new art at the end of the century through multilayered experiments and challenges.-
