This thesis aims to demonstrate that an individual?s power of existence mutually relates to community. According to Spinoza, power of community is nothing more than the disposition of the multitude?all citizens? power combined?because there is nothing except the power of individuals. Power of community is determined by the total sum of the multitude?s active and passive powers. The more freedom the community gives to its members?in other words the more active power individuals have in their existence?the stronger the power of community. Individuals who are free from oppression and subordination of community create this kind of community. This thesis, which is based on Spinoza?s views, can be summarized as follows: 1. Spinoza supports the metaphysical doctrine of monism?the immanence, rather than transcendence, of one substance, God, or nature. The substance is expressed or actualized in two attributes?extension and thought?of which there are infinitely more, though unknown to the human sense. The infinite attributes and finite mode are all immanently within substance or nature, and all attributes have an equal state. According to this theory, we can restore the state of extension, body, or physical nature, which has been believed by such philosophers as Plato and Descartes to have less value than thought, mind, idea, and so. 2. The body of an individual is composed of a number of other bodies that keep the same ration of motion and rest. This same proportion is the essence of the individual. The essence of the individual is a form element, while the other bodies are matter elements. This ratio of the essence of the individual maintains its nature despite numerous outer, passive influences. The unchangeable essence of the individual proves that the power of substance is expressed through the essence of the individual. In this essence, the individual is always perfect. Spinoza calls this essence of the individual conatus, through which the individual strives to preserve its being and to increase its own power. Perfection of the individual is increased or decreased according to the effects or passion that originates from encountering other things; for instance, there may be a joy effect or sad effect. 3. For Spinoza, adequate encountering is very important. Adequate encounters of other things always enhance the power of an individual?s existence. Adequate encountering of other things is a prerequisite of understanding adequate ideas, common notions, and reason. After gaining an adequate idea, individuals encounter other things adequately, which allows for coping with adequate body structure. The more adequate the idea the individual gains, the more freedom the individual has. Personal private virtue is enhanced, according to this course. However, it is common for the multitude?s ideas to be mostly inadequate. Spinoza calls this kind of inadequate idea imagination. In Spinoza?s system, no one exists out of substance, so imagination is an expression of substance?s existent power. Desire, another name of conatus, refers to conscious strivings to do something. Spinoza divides many affections into joy-affection, sad-affection, and desire. Joy-affection enhances man?s power of existence, whereas sad-affection decreases it. Conatus involves striving to encounter those things that result in joy-affection and eliminate those things that result in sad-affection. Above of all, active joy-affection is considered best to man. Active joy-affection is different from passive joy- affection, as well as sad-affection, in that active joy-affection is accompanied by adequate ideas, which gives invariable power to man?s existence. Still, regardless of whether it is active affection or passive affection, no affection can be restrained by the true knowledge of good and evil insofar as it is true, but only insofar as it is considered an affection. Only an affection that is stronger than other affections has the power to restrain. The degree of an affection?s power is an important concept to Spinoza. 4. In Spinoza?s view, community is closely related with personal private virtue. An individual cannot live alone out of community; man must always live in community. Man knows experientially and rationally that he must live in community in order to guard himself against strong enemies, hostile animals, natural disasters, and starvation. Man has the natural right to live freely and be secure in community. In nature, there are no legislative laws, good or bad; only power is right. In contrast, the order of community is kept via various legislative laws concerning the good and the bad. These legislative laws contain the widely accepted morals, customary rules, and values. Because there are no legislative laws in nature, legislative laws are clearly communal and imaginary. All members of a community are expected to obey the legislative human laws. These laws control the people and cause feelings of hope or fear affection in accordance with abidance to the laws. Permitting wide freedom is essential to the proper functioning of a community, and these legislative human laws prohibit man, thereby oppressing and invading citizens? freedom and security. 5. Man?s various dispositions are an expression of modified substance. Living with one?s own disposition is a natural right that God gives. This natural right cannot be transferred to any other, in that the natural right is an expression of a modified substance?s power through the individual. For Spinoza, natural right is power, and human community continues this natural state. Like any other natural power, natural right can only be restrained by a stronger power. Community is stronger than individual, and nation/government is the strongest community. Individuals cannot help but obey the government. However, power of community is nothing more than the disposition of the multitude, so when members are connected for one purpose, their power becomes stronger. The more members that connect to create more rational legislative laws, the stronger their power, which can result in changing previous irrational laws and ensuring that their one will is in concordance with God?s rational law. Their solidarity is necessary in that only solidarity makes minority groups stronger. 7. Reason is the more important element in understanding the structure of irrational law. Reason is understanding power. Along with reason, people need active imagination. With imagination, a rational new world is a possible thing, as the ?possible? is always imaginary. Language is also important in the imaginary method, for it conveys people?s thoughts and socially predominant views of values, resulting in newly created rational thought. The more members accept newly created rational thought through newly arranged words, the more new views of value gain power. Solidarity of man using common language can change the world.-
