원의 순환성과 완전성을 모티브로 한 실험 타이포그래피 연구

Abstract

Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher, said people have no choice but to fall into despair because they are all in the ‘sickness unto death’ - loss of self. And he depicted man as ‘a single individual before God’. Martin Heidegger ascribed an anxiety of man to limitation of life - death. For a long time, many people tried to get an answer to the same question, that is, a reason for being. The question is the most profound and abstruse subject that pestered human being for ages. These queries on life, that stemmed from the imperfection of man as Heidegger mentioned, have been appeared as various forms and in diverse fields - literature, religion, and art in general. The endless endeavor to answer the question about human being has been expanded and explored throughout history. Human starts his life with no explanation and faces death. He struggles to escape from the fear of death and the sufferings of life. As a result, some lean toward the absolute being; God and others undergo discipline to get to utopian worlds. Man constantly long for perfection in his incompleteness. This study is based on Buddhist doctrine which explains human desire with Nirvana, the perfect and ideal state, and Samsara, the agony in reality. In addition, human being’s long and fundamental aspirations for the completeness will be combined with symbolic circle. Circle figure has fascinated many people in diverse areas for a long period of time. An Italian architect, Leon Battista Alberti said “Circle is the most ideal to plane. Circle depicts perfect God and everything like the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, the Stars and nests of animals and birds are circles.” According to Wassily Kandinsky, “The circle is the synthesis of the greatest oppositions. It combines the concentric and the eccentric in a single form, and in balance. Beyond the three primary forms (triangle, square, circle), it points most clearly to the fourth dimension.” Circle represents a diversity of meanings. Among varied meanings such as softness, harmony, mobility and eternity, the most noticeable significance is completeness and perfection. Ancient Egyptian <reG>arded the Sun God Rah as the supreme deity that rules their lives and they had left symbolic circles representing Rah, the perfect being everywhere. In Buddhism, circle shape appears in Mandala which may portray the Land of Perfect Bliss and exists beyond agonizing life of reality. This project focuses on two circles. The first one is the ideal state as a symbol of completeness and the second represents repetitive and agonizing reality as a symbol of cycle. The most human of communication method is words. The linguistic system is complicated, scientific, effective and symbolic tool that ever invented. Typography not only focuses on conveyance of message but pays attention to aesthetic side of each character. It explores the figurative realm of words. Typographic expression enables people to communicate through formative and artistic means. Especially in this visual era of modern society, typography emerges as a new and creative method of communication. As inferred from the word ‘experiment’, experimental typography concentrated more on the artistic trait of typography than linguistic part. It is free from traditional concerns of typography such as legibility and even pushes the limits of notion of letters. Experimental typography draws attention in the mood of postmodernism of crossover and the advent of ‘designer as author’. It inspires many artists and designers nowadays and is constantly expanding its scope. Today many typographic experiments are held not only in a layout design but also in a field of typeface design. In this paper, the pursuit of the perfect state; Nirvana escaping from endless cycle of life and death; Samsara in Buddhism combined with circle figure and each state connected to the symbol of complete circle and chaotic cycle respectably. The fundamental human desire to reach perfection from imperfect reality can be expressed through experimental typography, which is based on the intellectual and symbolic system of human language. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential of experimental typography focusing on the meanings of completeness and cycle in circle figure. This will be achieved through the creation of the conceptual typefaces using circle as a main graphic source and the application of the typefaces to traditional graphic design method like posters along with motion graphics and moving types.;덴마크의 철학자 키에르케고르는 사람들이‘죽음에 이르는 병’에 걸려 있어 절망에 빠질 수밖에 없다고 하며, 인간을 ‘절망의 구렁텅이에서 단독자로서의 신을 바라보는 존재’라 묘사했다. 키에르케고르가 말하는‘죽음에 이르는 병’이란 자기 상실을 의미한다. 하이데거는 인간이 느끼는 존재에 대한 불안을 죽음이라는 한계성으로 설명했다. 오랜 시간 동안 수많은 사람들이 반복적으로 동일한 질문에 답하기 위해 노력해왔다. 그것은 "나는 누구인가”라는 존재 본질에 관한 의문이다. 이것은 가장 심오하고 궁극적이며 오랜 시간 인간을 괴롭혀온 주제라 할 수 있다. 존재에 관한 의문에 답하고자 하는 인간의 끊임없는 노력은 인간 존재, 주변 사물 나아가 세계 전체의 본질에 관한 것으로 확대되고 인류 역사를 관통하며 문학, 종교, 예술 전반에 걸쳐 탐구되어 왔다. 위와 같이 인간은 끊임없이, 단 하나의 질문에 답하지 못하며 쫓겨 온다. 다양한 모습으로 변형된 질문과 답안들이 있어왔지만 결국 그 질문의 근원지는 인간의 불완전성에 있는 것이라 할 수 있다. 연유를 알 수 없이 생을 시작하고 살아가며 그 앞으로는 비켜갈 수 없는 죽음을 마주하고 있는 인간은 죽음과 삶의 공포를 벗어나고자 몸부림친다. 그 결과로 어떤 이는 절대자를 창조해 기대고자하고, 또 어떤 이는 이상세계를 그려 그곳에 이르기 위해 수행한다. 인간은 불완전한 자기 속에서 흔들리지 않는 완전한 것을 동경하게 되는 것이다. 본 논문 작품은 인간의 근원적 불안에서 발아된 수많은 이론들 가운데 현세의 고뇌를 초월하여 완벽한 세상인 열반의 세계에 든다는 불교의 생명관을 바탕으로 한다. 이에 더해, 인간의 가장 근본적인 질문에 뒤따르는 완전성에 대한 동경을 원이라는 상징체와 접목하고자 한다. 수학자, 건축가부터 예술가에 이르기까지 많은 사람들이 원이라는 도형에 주목해왔는데, 이탈리아의 건축가 알베르티(Leon Battista Alberti)는 “원은 평면에 가장 이상적이다. 원은 완전한 신을 의미하며 지구, 해, 달, 별, 동물과 새들의 집 등, 이 모든 것이 원형이다.”라고 했으며, 칸딘스키(Wassily Kandinsky)는 "원은 대립하는 것의 총합이요, 구심성과 원심성은 하나의 형태로 균형을 갖추면서 통일을 이룬다. 세 가지 기본 형태인 세모, 네모, 원 중에서 원은 4차원의 가장 명료한 지표”라 서술했다. 원이 가진 무엇이 인간을 이토록 사로잡는 가에는 원이 내포한 의미만큼이나 다채로운 답을 내릴 수 있겠다. 원이라는 형상은 역사에 걸쳐 많은 사람을 매료 시켜왔고 다양한 분야에서 제각기 다른 의미로 그 존재를 드러내고 있다. 부드러움, 원만함, 운동성, 무한함 등 원이 가지는 수많은 의미들 가운데 단연 두드러지는 것은 완전성일 것이다. 고대 이집트인들은 자신의 삶을 관장하는 신 가운데 으뜸을 태양신으로 간주했고 절대적 힘을 가진 라(Rah)를 상징하는 태양의 원형을 그들 문화의 곳곳에 남겨놓았다. 불교에서는 번뇌에 가득찬 현세를 벗어난 극락정토(極樂淨土)의 세계를 원의 형상인 만다라로 표현한다. 본 연구자는 원의 상징들 중 완전성, 완벽함의 화신으로서의 원에 주목하고 작품의 주요 형상으로 선택하고자 하며, 이에 더해 완전함을 꿈꾸는 불완전한 현실의 혼돈은 원의 순환성과 결부해 표현하고자 한다. 인간이 그의 생각을 표출하고 전달하는 가장 ‘인간적인 방법’은 문자를 통하는 것으로 문자는 인간이 발명한 가장 체계적이며 효과적인 그리고 상징적인 도구 중 하나이다. 의사전달수단인 ‘문자’를 바탕으로 하지만, 그 임무만을 수행하고 벙어리처럼 물러나는 문자가 아닌 아름다운 형상으로 의미를 더 빛나게 하고 뜻과 한 몸이 되어 움직이며 그 스스로도 하나의 시각적 조형물로서 돋보일 수 있는 것이 타이포그래피이다. 타이포그래피는 정보량이 늘어나 그의 선택적 수용과 시선을 사로잡는 정보의 전시가 필수가 되어버린 현대에 와서 더욱 주목 받고 있다. ‘실험’이라는 단어에서 유추해 볼 수 있듯이 실험 타이포그래피는 단순한 수단이 아닌 그 자체가 목적이 될 수 있는 타이포그래피의 특성을 배가 시키는 작업으로 타이포그래피를 좀 더 독창적으로, 좀 더 아름답게 만들어 준다. 실험 타이포그래피는 시각 이미지의 신선함이 중요시되는 현대의 경향과 디자이너의 활동영역의 확장 등의 물결을 타고 주목 받는 분야로 부상하고 있으며 포스터와 같은 화면의 구성 뿐 아니라 서체의 개발의 분야에서도 그 실험성이 연구되고 있다. 본 논문은 지적이고 독창적인 인간의 언어체계를 바탕으로 하는 실험 타이포그래피의 방법을 통해 불완전함에서 완전함에 이르고자 하는 인간의 열망을 담아내고자 한다. 삶과 죽음에 관한 공포를 마주해야만 하는 불안의 현실을 벗어나 평정의 세계인 열반에 이르는 불교 생명관을 상징적 도형인 원과 결부하여, 이를 바탕으로 삼는다. 불교의 윤회의 수레바퀴에 사로잡힌 현세를 원이 가지는 상징들 가운데 순환성과 연결하고 현세를 넘어선 열반의 세계를 완전함을 의미하는 원과 연결 짓는다. 형(形)을 가진 상징적인 기호체계로서의 타이포그래를 통해 원이라는 형상과 순환하는 움직임을 이용하여 개념적인 실험 타이포그래피를 개발하고 그를 이용한 모션 타이포그래피와 그래픽적 화면 구성 등의 확장성을 연구하고자 한다.
