유기적 소통으로써의 구멍을 통한 인연(因緣)에 관한 책표현 연구

Abstract

현재 우리 시대의 과학 기술은 많은 아날로그 매체를 디지털화 해 나가고 있다. 카메라나 음반시장처럼 서적 분야도 그 중의 하나로, 전자책이 등장하면서 종이책이 대부분이었던 시장의 모습이 급격히 변화하고 있다. 전자책의 간편함, 그리고 절감되는 출판 비용과 과정 덕분에 전자책의 생산과 소비가 급증함에 따라 이대로 있다간 종이책이 전자책에게 자리를 물려주고 사라지게 될 것이라는 전망도 나오고 있다. ‘전자책이냐, 종이책이냐’의 논란도 가열되고 있지만, 분명한 것은 전자책이 이만큼 대두되기 시작했다는 점이다. 기술적인 면이나 편리성에서 보면, 합리적인 전자책이 종이책보다 더 나아보일지도 모른다. 하지만 인간의 감수성과 욕구는 더 복잡한 문제이다. 종이책을 비롯한 전통적인 책은 이용자의 직접적인 경험과 물리적 만족감, 신체의 감각 (특히 촉각과 후각)을 통해 다가갈 수 있다는 강점이 있다. 이 부분은 전자책이 대신하기에는 어려운 부분일 것이다. 발광하는 평면 위에 디스플레이 되는 전자책과, ‘종이 ―또는 프린트 아웃(print out)이 가능한 그 외의 재료―’ 위에 다양한 인쇄 기법으로 표현되는 종이책. 분명, 종이책에도 전자책이라는 새로운 기술이 근접하지 못할 무궁한 발전의 가능성이 더 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 디지털 기술의 발달로 점점 설 자리가 좁아져가는 책(冊)의 영역 안에서, 종이뿐만 아니라 그 외의 재료로 다양성을 넓히고 재료의 특성을 이용해 가능성을 실험해 보고자 한다. 자르기, 접기, 오리기, 다양한 인쇄기법 등 책의 변형된 형식과 출판 사례는 많지만, 범위가 한정돼있거나 단순한 논리에 그치는 경우가 대부분이다. 연구자는 전통적인 책의 영역확장의 가능성을 실험함으로써, 단순한 논리의 적용을 피하기 위해 이론적 기반이 되는 철학을 가져왔다. 본 연구는 동양의 유기적 시공간 개념을 기반으로 하며, 이 이론적 토대를 통해 주제의 의미와 범위를 명료하게 하고, 물리적 재료의 특성을 이용한 디자인 방법론을 모색한다. 이론적 기반이 된 유기적 시공간 개념은, 연구자의 작품주제인 ‘인연(因緣)’에서부터 출발한다. 인연(因緣)이란, 서로의 연분을 의미하는 것으로써, 불교적인 의미에서 결과를 낳게 하는 직접적인 원인(因)과 외부에서 돕는 간접적인 원인(緣)의 복합체로 결국 ‘원인’을 뜻하는 말이다. 기본적으로 세상에 존재하는 모든 것은 원인과 결과의 법칙이 작용하고, 서로 상관관계 속에 놓여있다는 것을 뜻한다. 이것은 불교에서 인간의 삶과 세계가 어떻게 성립하고 가능한지를 설명해주는 중요한 개념이다. 철학과 사상의 발전도 인간의 삶을 위한 것이라면, ‘인연이다’라는 것은 서로가 원인이 되고 관계를 맺는다는 연줄을 뜻하는 것으로 의미가 좁혀질 수 있다. 이처럼, 모든 현상은 관계를 맺고 인연에 따라 일어나고 존재한다는 것에서 유기체(有機體)론 적인 동양의 세계관을 엿볼 수 있었다. 동양에선 시간과 공간을 분리해 여기지 않았으며, 삶의 주체인 사람을 비롯해 존재하는 모든 것은 시공간 안에 있다고 하였다. 시공간 안의 모든 것은 서로 유기적인 관계를 맺고 상호작용하며 변화해 간다는 것이 중심적인 내용이다. 요소들 간의 관계에서 공간 개념이 생겨나고, 변화하는 과정에서 시간 개념이 생겨났다. 이와 같이 현상들 간의 관계와 변화에 중점을 둔 동양의 유기적 시공간 개념을 바탕으로 하여, 주제에 맞는 형식과 디자인 방법론을 도출해냈다. 종이책의 특성을 살린 표현을 위해, 책이라는 구조가 하나의 공간이고 페이지를 넘김으로써 생기는 변화가 책 안에서의 시간이라면, 이들의 관계가 유기적으로 소통할 수 있는 매개체로 ‘구멍’이라는 요소를 적용하였다. 앞에서 관통하여 뒤까지 동시에 볼 수 있는 큰 특징을 지닌 구멍은 책의 각 페이지를 유기적으로 연결해줄 수 있는 장치이며, 종이의 특성을 잘 살릴 수 있는 표현기법이다. 본 연구는 모든 현상은 연결되어있다는 바탕 아래, 인간 삶에서 맺어지는 인연에 대한 이야기를 책에 구멍을 이용한 방법론으로 표현하고자 한다. 연구자의 작품에서 나타나는 구멍들은 단지 장식의 요소가 아닌, 책 안에서 페이지끼리 서로 관계하며 조형적인 의미를 갖고 소통하는 역할을 할 수 있도록 하고자 하였다. 연구자의 인연(因緣)이라는 주제를 통하여, 디지털 기술의 발전으로 점점 설 자리가 좁아져만 가는 전통적인 책의 영역 안에서 책의 물리적인 촉감과 시각을 살린 표현을 실험하기 위해, 유기적 시공간 개념을 빌려와 ‘구멍’이란 표현 요소를 사용하고 다양한 개발 가능성을 연구한다. 디지털 매체나 전자책의 침범을 받지 않고 전통적인 책의 영역을 확립하기 위해서는, 이처럼 책(冊)만이 가진 장점을 십분 활용하여 실험할 필요가 있다. 지금보다 훨씬 다양한 방법을 구사하여 책의 형태는 물론이고, 재료의 특성과 재질 등을 이용한 변형을 시도하는 기회가 더 많아져야 하며, 이를 통해 많은 대중들이 책의 다양성을 경험할 수 있어야 할 것이다.;Nowadays, scientific techniques are digitalizing various analog Medias. The publication field is one of the examples. Due to the rapid increase of the electronic book’s production and consumption, sooner or later paper books might disappear completely in the publication industry. Electronic books might seem to be technically more convenient and outstanding than paper books. But, paper books and other traditional books have the strength in giving the reader direct experience, physical satisfaction and advantage in approaching the reader by physical senses. These facts are difficult to be replaced by electronic books. Certainly, there are tremendous possibilities in developing paper books that cannot be competed with the new technology of electronic books. Therefore in this study, the researcher will experiment the potential of paper books, which is gradually diminishing in the publication industry, due to the development of digital technology. The experiment will be done by using the characteristics of paper and other various materials. The theory will be based on the oriental concept of the interactive space time, which also clarifies the range and meaning of the topic. Moreover, the design methodology will be discovered by using books and characteristics of the physical materials. The concept of the interactive space time comes from the researcher’s artwork ‘relationships’ (因緣). In Buddhism, ‘relationship’ (因緣) means a result created by a direct cause and complexity of indirect cause of help from without. In other words, it means ‘cause’. Everything that exists in this world has a cause and effect and is interrelated. This is an important concept that explains how the human life and the world are established. In human life, ‘is a relationship’ (因緣이다) narrows into the meaning of a cause of one another and form of connection. Therefore, every phenomenon makes a connection and exists and awakes by a relationship, which shows the interaction of the oriental outlook of the world. In the East, time and space was not separated. Everything in the space time was related and changed as it interacts. ‘Relationship’ between elements created the concept of space, and the process of ‘change’ created the concept of time. The researcher is to derive a design methodology and a proper form for the research topic, which is based on the emphasis of the oriental concept ‘relationship and change’. If the structure of a book is ‘space’, and the changes of the book by turning each page is ‘time’, the ‘hole’ is an element that helps these two elements relate and interact. The hole that penetrates from the front to the back of the book becomes a connection that interacts and communicates each page and throughout the book. In addition, this is one of the best expressive techniques that reflect the characteristics of paper. This research is based on the connection of every phenomenon and expresses stories of relationship in human life by punching holes on paper. The holes in the researcher’s artwork attempt to show the relation between each page of the book while giving a formative meaning and a role of communication. The researcher used the ‘holes’ as an element of expression to experiment with the physical characteristics of the traditional paper books that is diminishing in the publication industry due to the development of digital technology. In order to keep the publication industry of traditional paper books and not get violate by the digital media or electronic books, the advantages of paper books must be continuously applied and experimented. As a result, the public must be exposed to the various potential possibilities of paper books.
