The Brazilian Market’s Increasing Attractiveness to Korean Companies

Abstract

South Korean FDI into Brazil has increased greatly in the last six years. South Korean has consolidated its position among the 10 largest direct investors in Brazil in 2010. Furthermore, Brazil was the 7th largest host of South Korean FDI in that same year. However, the scenario was very different few years ago. Brazil used to attract very little of South Korean FDI. It was only in 2005 that this scenario started to change and since that year, South Korean FDI into Brazil has increased sharply. This paper investigates the factors that have attracted South Korean FDI into Brazil. This research demonstrates that South Korean main motivation to invest in Brazil is Brazilian increasing market-size. Against the conclusions of previous studies, this research found that, although Brazil is a developing country, Brazilian labor cost is a less important variable on explaining South Korean companies interest in Brazil.;지난 6년간 브라질에 한국의 FDI는 크게 증가 하였습니다. 한국은 2010년 브라질의 10대 직접 투자 국가 사이에서 그 위치를 확고히 하고 있습니다. 또한, 같은 해에 한국 FDI 중 브라질은 7번째로 큰 나라였습니다. 그러나, 몇 년 전만해도 상황은 매우 달랐습니다. 브라질은 한국 FDI의 아주 작은 부분만 차지하고 있었습니다. 2005년부터 브라질에 한국의 FDI는 급격하게 증가하기 시작하였습니다. 본 논문은 브라질시장에 대한 한국기업의 관심이 증가한 것을 설명하기 위한 사실을 연구하였습니다. 이 연구는 한국기업들이 브라질에 투자하는 가장 큰 동기가 브라질시장의 성장이라는 것을 보여줍니다. 이전 연구결과들에 반해, 이번 연구는 브라질이 비록 개발도상국 이지만 브라질 노동자들의 임금은 한국기업들이 브라질에 관심을 갖는 부차적인 이유라는 것을 찾아냈습니다.
