- Abstract
- This portfolio introduces a unique CLT-based textbook to accommodate current Korean EFL situations. It uses a tool called Readers Theater (RT) which combines the elements both of storytelling and drama. Unlike most other methods, using drama in language teaching involves all four skills and provides a solid context for language learning (Dodson, 2000). Plus, it provides a touch of motivation and an element of fun to the classroom. Byrne (1986) suggests that it helps to develop students’ creativity and imagination and provides opportunities to develop their fluency skills.
The target group of students is Korean middle school students between the ages of 12 to 15 with proficiencies ranging from Lower to Upper Intermediate in the ALTE scale. I chose this group because they face the new national English exam starting in 2016, which is known as the National English Aptitude Test (NEAT). NEAT will replace the current KSAT, and the major difference between the two exams is that NEAT asks for students’ organized speaking and writing skills. The methods and techniques used in this textbook should aid teachers and students to prepare for the new requirements.
