- This portfolio is designed to provide writing instructions for a group of third graders at Jangwon Middle School students who have completed the final exam of the last semester in middle school. Jangwon Middle School is a public school that runs level-differentiated English classes. The target students are from high level classes who have followed the education system of Korea for almost 9 years and have never been abroad before. Recently, the schedule for admissions to high schools has been moved up a month and after the admission process is over, students have lots of free time during the rest of the school days.
Most Korean EFL textbooks do not cover writing very much because the current Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test (KSAT) does not include writing skills. As a result, typical Korean students who have learned English for more than five years in public schools are very weak in writing. In addition, the Ministry of Education announced that KSAT would be replaced with the National English Ability Test (NEAT) in 2013 and now the students want writing instruction in class. Therefore, creating a writing textbook can provide meaningful instructions at the end of the year.
