남녀 대학생의 부·모와의 관계 및 성격특성이 친구관계에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 남녀 대학생의 부모와의 관계 및 성격특성과 친구관계 간의 관계를 탐색하고, 부모와의 관계와 친구관계 간의 관계에서 성격특성이 중재역할을 하는지 규명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 서울시에 위치한 대학교 1, 2학년에 재학 중인 373명의 남녀 대학생을 대상으로 부모와의 관계, 친구관계 및 성격특성에 관한 자기 보고용 질문지를 배부하여 자료를 수집하였다. 대학생의 부모와의 관계와 친구관계는 Armsden과 Greenberg(1987)가 제작한 부모 및 또래 애착 척도(Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment: IPPA)를 Raja, McGee와 Stanton(1992)이 수정한 개정본(IPPA-R)을 옥정(1998)이 번안한 것을 사용하여 측정하였다. 대학생의 성격특성은 IPIP(International Personality Item Pool)(Goldberg, 1999)를 유태용, 이기범, Ashton(2004)이 번안한 것을 사용하여 측정하였다. 연구문제 분석을 위해서는 변인들 간의 상관관계분석과 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 연구문제에 따른 주요결과를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 남녀 대학생의 부모와의 관계와 친구관계 간의 관계를 살펴본 결과, 남녀 대학생 모두 부모와의 관계와 친구관계는 정적상관으로 아버지와의 관계 및 어머니와의 관계가 친밀할수록 친구관계는 좋은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 남녀 대학생의 성격특성과 친구관계 간의 관계를 살펴본 결과, 남자 대학생의 경우, 성격특성 중 외향성, 친화성, 개방성, 성실성은 친구관계와 정적상관으로 외향성, 친화성, 개방성, 성실성이 높을수록 친구관계가 친밀한 것으로 나타났다. 여자 대학생의 경우, 성격특성 중 외향성과 친화성은 친구관계와 정적인 관련성이 있으며, 신경증과는 부적인 관련성이 나타났다. 즉, 외향성 및 친화성이 높을수록 친구관계는 좋은 반면, 신경증이 높을수록 친구관계는 좋지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 부모와의 관계와 친구관계에 있어서 성격특성의 중재역할을 살펴본 결과, 남자 대학생의 경우, 아버지와의 관계 및 어머니와의 관계와 친구관계에서 성실성이 중재역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 아버지와의 관계 및 어머니와의 관계가 친밀한 경우에는 성실성이 높을 때 친구관계가 좋았으며, 아버지와의 관계 및 어머니와의 관계가 좋지 않을 경우, 성실성이 낮을 때 친구관계가 좋았다. 한편, 여자 대학생의 경우, 어머니와의 관계와 친구관계에서 외향성이 중재역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 어머니와의 관계가 친밀한 경우에는 외향성의 높고 낮음에 따라 친구관계의 친밀도에 차이가 없으나, 어머니와의 관계가 좋지 않을 경우, 외향성이 높으면 친구관계는 좋은 반면, 외향성이 낮으면 친구관계는 좋지 않았다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서 아버지와의 관계 및 어머니와의 관계는 남녀 대학생 모두의 친구관계에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 성격특성 중 외향성, 친화성, 개방성, 성실성은 남자 대학생의 친구관계에 영향을 미치는 한편, 외향성, 친화성, 신경증은 여자 대학생의 친구관계에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 남자 대학생의 경우, 아버지와의 관계 및 어머니와의 관계에서 성실성이 중재역할을 하며, 여자 대학생의 경우, 어머니와의 관계와 친구관계에서 외향성이 중재역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 부모와의 관계와 성격특성이 대학생의 친구관계를 예측하는 주요변인임을 확인하고, 성격특성의 하위요인 중 성실성과 외향성이 부모와의 관계와 친구관계 간의 관계에서 중재역할을 한다는 것을 규명하는 한편, 부모-자녀 관계가 유아기나 아동기 및 청소년기뿐만 아니라 청년기인 대학생 시기에도 중요함을 재확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.;The purpose of the current study is to examine the association between the relationship with parents, personality trait and friendship. A total of 373 college students (mean age=20.45, 53.6% girls) participated in this study. College students filled out a set of questionnaires, including Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Revised Version (Raja, McGee & Stanton, 1992) and International Personality Item Pool (Goldberg, 1999). Pearson's correlation and hierarchical regression were used for data analysis. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were some differences in the relationship with parents, friendships, neuroticism, agreeableness and conscientiousness as a function of sex of college students. Female college students obtained higher scores on the relationship with parents, friendship, neuroticism and agreeableness; whereas, male college students perceived higher conscientiousness. However, there were no sex differences of college students in openness to experience and extroversion. Second, the relationship with parents was positively correlated with friendship. This study shows that both male and female students are equal in terms of having a positive experience with parents resulting in a positive experience with friends. Third, in case of male college students, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness were positively correlated with friendship. However, when it comes to female college students, extroversion and agreeableness were positively correlated with friendship; whereas, neuroticism was negatively correlated with friendship. Finally, the moderating effect of conscientiousness of male college students was found in the link between the relationship with parents and friendship. As far as female college students are concerned, the moderating effect of extroversion was found in the link between the relationship with mother and with friends. The current study confirms the importance of the relationship with parents and personality trait for college students' friendships. The findings also suggest that the relationship between parents and child serves an important role in childhood as well as throughout college.
