모성 체험의 표현

Abstract

어머니와 자식 관계를 표현하는 말인 '모성애'는 '자식에 대한 어머니의 본능적인 사랑'이다. 이 본능적 사랑은 세상의 모든 어머니에게 존재한다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 각자 사람들은 모두 어머니에 대한 생각과 이미지가 머릿속에 있을 것이다. 인간이라면 누구나 어떤 방식이든 어머니에 대한 사랑을 경험해봤을 것이며 그에 대해 좋은 기억이든 나쁜 기억이든 여러 가지 경험을 기억하고 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서 연구자는 나의 어머니의 사랑으로부터 시작하여 내가 아이에게 주는 사랑에 이르는 관계 속에서 모성적 본능을 찾고 여성으로서의 어머니, 즉 여성에 존재하고 있는 모성에 대해 재고해보고자 하였다. 어머니의 사랑이 나에게 어떤 방식으로 주어졌는지를 기억해 보고, 본인의 7점의 작품을 통해 어머니의 무한한 사랑을 표현하였다. 과거로부터 모성을 주제로 한 예술작품에는 미켈란젤로의 <피에타>부터 루이즈 부르주아, 메리 켈리, 그리고 윤석남의 작품까지 많은 예를 찾아볼 수가 있다. 그들 각자에게 있어서 모성은 각각의 다른 방식으로 인식되어지고, 다양한 표현방법을 통해 시각 예술로서 드러난다. 연구자의 작업은 크게는 이들의 작업과 같은 맥락에 있으면서도 작게는 본인의 체험을 통해 이루어지기 때문에 이들의 작업과 차별성을 갖는다. 우선적으로 본인은 체험된 모성을 표현하는 데에 있어 뜨개질의 형식을 가지고 <베넷저고리>와 <이불>을 만듦으로써 작업을 진행하였다. 뜨개질은 반복되고 지속되는 과정 속에서 인내심과 긴 시간을 필요로 하는 행위다. 이 작업은 한 땀 한 땀 엮어내는 과정에서 내 어머니에 대한 기억으로부터 지금의 내 아이에 대한 사랑까지 많은 생각을 떠올리고 그 사랑을 구체화시킨 작업이라 할 수 있다. 그 다음으로는 기록에 대한 작업으로는 어머니의 상자 속에서 20년이 넘게 보관되어 있던 '나의 그림일기', '상장', '어머니의 육아 일기' 등을 발견하고 그 순간의 감흥을 바탕으로 하여 그 현장을 찍어 <발견된 상자>을 제작하였다. 그리고 나의 아이를 기다리며 드로잉 했던 <지구의 목마>를 통해서는 내 아이에 대한 사랑을 표현하였다. 또 학창시절 어머니가 싸주셨던 <도시락>은 어머니의 정성을 느낄 수 있는 상징적인 오브제이다. 이 작업은 어머니의 정성을 희생과 고통의 상징인 진주를 하나하나씩 붙여나가는 방식으로 작업하였다. <아기신발>은 아이의 첫걸음의 소중함을 백토 위에 작은 꽃문양으로 하나하나 새겨 넣어 작업을 진행하였다. 마지막으로 <기도>는 자식을 위해 간절히 발원을 하고 기도를 하는 어머니의 모습을 담아내고자 하였다. 아울러 이 연구를 통해 모든 사람들이 잘 알면서도 쉽게 잊고 있는 '어머니의 사랑'을 발견하여 영원히 변하지 않는 사랑을 주는 존재, 어머니를 기억해내어 본다. 그리고 내 아이를 통해 모성의 행위가 드러나면서 여성이 갖는 특수적 상황인 모성을 표현하는 것에 의의를 두었다. 그리하여 여성들이 가지고 있는 세밀함, 인내심, 감성들이 여러 방식으로 모성을 표현되었다. 일곱 작품에 표현된 모성은 어머니에게 받은 사랑, 내가 아이에게 주는 사랑의 표현 방식이 다르지만 정성과 희생을 동반하는 자식을 사랑하는 마음만은 일치한다고 본다.;'Motherhood', which is expressed as the relationship between mother and child, 'is the mother's instinctual love for her child'. This instinctual love exists for all mothers. And each and every person carries a thought or an image of her mother inside her mind. For every human being they should have experienced the love from their mother by whatever means and whether they were good or bad memories they should have remembered them in many different experiences. This research is to find the motherly instinct within the relationship thats starts from my mother's love to the love given to my child and to rethink what a woman is as a mother, in other words the motherhood that exists in women. I tried to remember in what way my mother's love meant to me and I tried to express a mother's eternal love for her child through seven pieces I have created. Art works in the past that have used motherhood as the main theme, starting from Michelangelo's "Pieta" to Louis Bourgeois, Mary Kelley and Yoon Suk-nam have been made constantly until now. The motherhood that was meant to them was expressed in various ways as a visual artist. Through this research I have created a "Baby's Jacket" and "Blanket" which were done by knitting. Knitting is a lengthy act that demands patience and a long period of time within a repetitive and continuous process. While sweating one drop after another, many thoughts that entailed the memories of my mother and the love for my child unearthed and it can be seen as a work that gave shape to that love. For a work about recording, I discovered 'my drawing diary', 'badges', 'my mother's diary of childraising', which was in a box that my mother stored for twenty years. It was a large inspiration for me so I took a photo of that scene and created "The Discovered Box", and I used the drawing which I created while waiting for my child in my womb to express my motherly love through "Earth's Wooden Horse". Also, the "Lunch Box" which my mother made for me everyday during my school years is a symbolic object of art that can make us feel the love of my mother. Her love was expressed through pearls, which symbolizes sacrifice and pain, and I inserted each pearl one after another on the lunch box. I also created "Baby's Shoes" to symbolize the preciousness of a child's first walk by carving a flowery image one by one on white mud. Lastly, "Prayer" was to express the mother praying earnestly for her child. In addition I tried to discover the motherly love which we all know about but tend to forget, and tried to remember the very existence who gives us everlasting love - our mother - through this research. And as the act of motherhood revealed itself through my child, I placed significance on the expression of motherhood in situations that are especially characteristic of women. Through this, the meticulousness, patience and sensibilities particular to women expressed motherhood in different ways. In line with the motherhood expressed in the seven works, the love received from my mother and the love given to my child was The motherhood expressed in the seven works - the love received from my mother and the love given to my child - were expressed in different ways, however the compassion and sacrifice that accompany the love for the child coincide.
