사물에 대한 또 다른 메타포와 일루젼으로서의 단면(斷面)

Abstract

본 연구는 보이지 않는 영역과 외형적 이미지의 진정성에 대한 의문에서 비롯되었다. 이러한 보이지 않는 부분에 대한 궁금함은 자르기라는 통로를 거쳐 내부를 들여다보는 것으로 연결되었다. 모든 사물에는 좌, 우, 앞, 뒷면이 있고, 단면도 있다. 하지만 공간을 수학화 시킨 원근법적 사고는 관조자가 바라보는 한 방향으로 깊게 보되 총체적인 구조에 대한 부분은 배제시키도록 만든다. 우리가 외형으로 인식할 수 있는 것은 거리감과 공간감을 포함하는 공간적 인식이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 자르기를 통해 드러나는 단면(斷面)은 입체성이 사라진 이미지로, 보이지 않았던 내부의 기능적 요소들을 숨김없이 드러내며 관념적으로 고정되어있던 외형적 인식으로부터의 변화를 가져온다. 잘려진 단면은 그 외부를 보았을 때는 알 수 없는 '보이지 않았던 것과 만나는 것'이며, 사물에 대한 기존의 인식체계가 해체되는 동시에 세상을 인식하는 새로운 방법이라 할 수 있다. 그것은 단지 무지에 대한 탐구가 아닌 외형적, 가시적 세계에 의존할 수밖에 없는 우리의 시각에 대해 다른 관점으로의 확장을 꾀하는 것이며, 일반적으로 세상을 바라보는 시각에서 포괄적, 심층적, 내면적 시각으로의 전의를 뜻한다. 내부로의 접근방법으로서 자르기는 분해 또는 해체 등의 방법으로 다양화되고 이러한 방법적 확대는 ‘사물에 대한 또 다른 메타포와 일루젼으로서의 단면’이라는 또 다른 사유의 영역으로 확장된다. 작업의 표현에 있어서는, 기능을 가진 사물(오브제)을 빌려와 표현하였다. 도구에 의해 필연적으로 드러난 단면은 스케일이 변화된 사진으로 표현되는데 정면-클로즈업된 사진은 내부의 요소들이 시각적으로 극대화 되며 또 다른 뜻하지 않은 일루젼으로 드러난다. 단면은 면들의 직접적인 만남으로 그 안의 요철들이 있는 그대로 드러나는 프레스 판화 기법과 같이 표현되기도 한다. 분해된 사물의 수평적 나열은 입체적 시점에 길들여진 우리에게 그 내부를 동시에-동등한 구조로 보여주고자 하는 표현 방법이다. 이러한 시점의 변화를 통해 사물 혹은 세상을 바라보는 시각을 열어두고 대상을 인식하는 방법에 있어 '동시에-동등한 시점'의 새로운 관점으로 바라보고자 한다.;This study starts from the curiosity about disclosed areas and trust-worthiness of revealed images, which lead to an attempt to find the hidden essence embedded in surfaces through cross-sections created with cuts. When we look at an object, there can be several different viewpoints which lead to different aspects such as front, back, left, right or cross-section. However, we are much accustomed to linear perspective, in which we can focus on only one viewpoint relying on surfaces and exclude the other aspects or structures. By the way of cutting an object, we can reach another aspect of the hidden inside commanding functional elements and take a different view. When we look at the cut cross-sections, we can find different truth which cannot be spotted in the surfaces and those cross-sections themselves can be referred to as a different way of destructing conventional perspectives and restructuring another perspectives into the world. In this way, we can expand our viewpoint from the surface to the virtual, internal and mental inside. Cutting as a way of an approach to the inside of an object can be differentiated into disassembling, dismantling and so far. And also these expansion of methodologies can take us to another conceptional area where we can see the cross-sections as metaphors or illusions for the essence of an object. Specifically, objects which means things having their own functions, are taken to express these concepts above. Cross-sections of those objects created with some instruments are expressed in pictures of changed scales, where up-front close-ups highlight the inner elements of the objects and give us un-expected illusions about the objects. The cross-sections can be expressed in the 'press-print' technique which describes the objects with the direct contacts of several faces. And displaying those slides of an decomposed object in one flat slide can be a formative-artistic expression which can take us from the conventional view-point to another insight into the inner aspect of an object. After all, this study makes a point that we can confront an object, or even the whole world in a different open way by taking another view-points above.
