일상 속에서 만난 특별한 그림자

Abstract

이미지의 홍수 속에서 어지럼을 느낀 나는 이미지의 기계적인 생산물이 아닌 자연스러운 것, 아날로그적인 것에 대한 향수를 느낀다. 어린 시절부터 좋아 했던 것을 더듬어 보다 그림자를 떠올렸는데, 요즘의 이미지들과는 다르게 참으로 감성적인 방법으로 원본을 차용하고 있다고 느꼈다. 게다가 빛에 의해 생기는 그림자는 자연의 일부라고도 할 수 있으니 자연이 원래 가지고 있는 아름다움까지도 본질적으로 지니고 있다. 나는 그림자가 생기는 곳을 유심히 들여다보는 습관이 있다. 그러다 어느 밤, 집안 탁자 위에서 너무나 매력적인 투명 물체의 그림자를 만났다. 예로부터 보석처럼 귀하게 여겨지던 투명성은 인간의 편리에 의해 투명한 물체들이 대량생산 되면서 무가치해 졌지만 그것이 만들어 내는 그림자는 여전히 보석 같았다. 투명한 물체가 빛을 받아 만들어낸 그림자는 몽환적이고 환상적이어서 추상적이기도 하지만 일반적인 그림자에 비해 섬세하고 사실적이기도 해서 두 가지의 상반된 특징을 동시에 갖고 있다. 빛의 조건에 따라, 그리고 물체 안에서의 물질적 변화에 따라 어떻게 그림자가 드리워질지는 실제로 그림자가 바닥에 그림을 그려 넣기 전까지 오직 상상력에 의존해야 한다. 이렇게 매력을 끊임없이 발산하는 그림자와 그 그림자를 만들어 내는 물체를 곁에 두기 위해 작업은 진행 되었다. 투명 물체의 그림자는 그 효과를 극대화하기 위하여 인공적인 빛을 이용하였다. 이를 사진으로 촬영하였고 촬영한 사진 위에 casting한 물체들을 올려놓았다. casting한 물체는 물체의 본래 성질에 나와 작업하는 동안의 시공간적 환경이 축적되어 마치 화석화된 덩어리처럼 만들었는데 이는 기념비적 성격을 갖는다. 작업에 이용한 물체들은 대부분 대량 생산되거나 집안에서 볼 수 있는 일상용품들이다. 이 물체들은 나의 우연한 선택에 의해 작업에 이용되었지만 개인적인 이야기들이 담겨 있어 나의 일상을 단편적이나마 드러내 보여 주고 있다. 작업을 하면서 만나게 된 그림자들은 나를 꿈속으로 안내했고 동화 속을 여행하게 했으며 어린 시절을 추억하게 했다. 투명한 물체는 환상적인 그림자를 드리우지만 다른 일상적 물체들처럼 쉽게 버려진다. 고인(故人)의 업적을 기리기 위해 비석을 세우 듯, 사진으로 찍은 투명한 그림자 위에 석고 덩어리를 만들어 올려놓는 과정 속에는 나에게 특별한 그림자를 만들어 준 투명 물체에 대한 고마움과 투명한 물체와 소통했던 시간의 회고적 성격이 담겨있다. 사진을 찍고, 석고로 casting 하는 일련의 작업 과정은 그 순간을 잡아 두기 위한 행위이며 표현 방법이다. 우리는 늘 지쳐있는 일상에서 벗어나기를 갈망한다. 그 방법이 일상을 접고 여행을 떠나거나 자신에게 물질적인 보상을 해주어야 한다는 등의 조금은 특별한 방법으로 이루어 져야 한다고 믿는다. 나는 특별한 그림자와의 만남을 통해 일상 속에서도 마음을 열어 놓는다면 그것이 얼마든지 가능하다는 것을 경험했다. 나의 아이와 공원에 나가 산책을 할 때면 아기는 지나가는 개미와 꽃에게 ‘안녕’하며 천진하게 인사를 건넨다. 우리에게 이런 마음이 필요한 것 아닐까? 이미 지쳐있는 자신을 능동적으로 깨우는 것이 쉽지는 않겠지만 상상하지 못했던 일상의 풍경을 만나게 되면 생각이 좀 바뀔지도 모르겠다. 단순히 상상의 나래를 펴는 것이 아니라 물체와 소통하고 깨끗한 마음으로 그 속을 들여다보면 지금까지와는 사뭇 다른 새로운 경험을 할 수도 있다. 아주 평범한 일상 속의 무엇이 우리의 감성을 어루만져주고 삶 속에 활력을 불어 넣을 것이다.;Suffering dizziness in a great flood of images, I feel nostalgia for something natural and analogue which is not a product of machines. Thinking about what I‘ve liked since I was a child, I found out 'shadows', and that was such a sensitive image different from the ones we could see these days. Because the light is a part of nature, I thought the shadows could be also considered as a part of nature, and it surely has the natural beauty. I enjoy look into something where the shadows exist. One night I met an attractive shadow of a transparent object. In the old days transparency was considered as a precious property compared to jewels but it became worthless because of the mass production. Nowadays we have so many transparent things and people take their convenience and existence for granted. But still, I think the shadows of the transparent objects are like jewels. The shadows made from the transparent objects have two different characteristic at the same time: it is not only dreamlike, fantastical and abstract but it is also detailed and realistic than common shadows. According to the condition of lights and the change of material inside the objects make the shadows sensitive and changeable. So people only imagine how the shape of things would be, but it's almost impossible to know the exact shadow by thinking it. This work began to hold on this attractive shadows and the objects with me. I used artificial lights to get the effective shadows of the transparent objects. And then I took pictures of it and put the castings on the photos. The plaster cast objects are kind of a fossilized monument made of the original character of the object and the space time during my working. Most of the things used in the work are mass production or daily necessaries which we can easily find in homes. These objects were selected by chance but they can show pieces of my life. The shadows I met during working made me travel in dreams, fairy tales and helped me look back on the childhood. The transparent objects make fantastic shadows but they get thrown away easily like the other daily necessaries. As we set up a monument of the deceased, I put the mass of the plaster on the photo. In this process, it has thankful meanings of the transparent object and remembrance of the special shadows. All the working process- taking photos, making plaster casts and so on -are my actions and expressions to hold on the moment. We always want to get out of tired daily life. And we try to figure out the way to forget about one's life by going on a trip or being rewarded by something special. But if you are open-minded, you can possibly experience new things in you daily life. My child says an innocent 'Hello' to ants and flowers while taking a walk. Isn't this the mind we need? It won't be easy to wake up your tired mind but it could be different if you meet the daily scene you have ever imagined. Not just wondering but communicating with the object and having innocent mind, will make new experience to you. It will give a hug to your sensibility and offer a great energy in your life as well.
