Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relations between marital conflict, parent-adolescent communication, and friendship quality of adolescents including a mediating role of parent-adolescent communication between marital conflicts and friendship quality of adolescents. The subjects were 349 2nd grade middle school students (202 boys and 147 girls) living in Seoul and completed three kinds of questionnaires regarding marital conflict, parent-adolescent communication, and friendship quality of adolescents. Marital conflict, parent-adolescent communication, and friendship quality of adolescents were rated by adolescents themselves. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and regressions. The results of this study are as follows: First, boys who perceived that their parents' marital conflicts were resolved had positive feelings for their friends and friends functions. Adolescents who perceived that their parents' marital conflicts was not resolved and related to themselves showed negative feelings for friends. On the other hands, for girls, marital conflicts didn't have a significant impact friendship quality. Second, adolescents who kept open communication with their father and mother showed positive feelings for their friends and friendship functions. Adolescents who kept problem communication with their father and mother showed negative feelings for their friends. In addition, as a result of examining the relative influence, boys who kept open communication with their mother showed relatively high friendship functions. For girls, communication with their father showed relatively high friendship quality. Third, the more an adolescent perceived their parents' marital conflicts had been resolved, the more open communication between father-adolescent and mother-adolescent showed. Parents' marital conflicts had more significant impact on boys than girls on open communication between parents and adolescent. Finally, for boys, open communications with their father and mother played complete mediating roles between resolution of marital conflict and positive feelings for their friends. Problem communications with father and mother played complete mediating roles between content of marital conflict and negative feelings for their friends. Open communications with their father and mother played partial mediating roles between resolution of marital conflict and friendship functions. Specially, open communications with their mother played relatively influential mediating roles between resolution of marital conflicts and friendship functions. On the other hands, for girls, communications with their father and mother didn't play mediating roles between marital conflicts and friendship quality of adolescents. In conclusion, a resolution of parents' marital conflicts increased positive feelings for their friends and friendship functions. On the other hands, resolution decreased negative feelings for their friends, while content of marital conflicts increased them. In addition, communication with their father and mother was found to functions as a mediator between marital conflict and friendship quality of adolescents. Therefore, communication with their father and mother is identified as one of integral factors to predict friendship quality of adolescents.
