시간의 소멸성과 순환성을 반영하는 실험 타이포그래피 연구

Abstract

사람들은 살아가면서 어떠한 대상에 대해 수많은 경험과 기억을 갖는다. 그리고 그 대상이 소멸이나 부재를 통해 '죽음'으로 인지 될 때, 우리에게 주어진 시간은 한정되어 있으며, 삶이 영원하지 않다는 것을 인식하게 된다. 이 같은 사라짐과 함께 수반되는 아련한 그리움과 회환, 허무함이라는 노스탤지어(nostalgia)적 감성은, 유한한 시간 속에 다가올 자신의 소멸을 깨닫고 나타나는 무의식의 감성이다. 이러한 유한한 삶 속에서, 일상은 하루 24시간, 1년 365일 되풀이된다. 즉, 존재에게 주어진 시간은 자연의 섭리와 마찬가지로 생성과 소멸의 과정을 밟으며, 일상의 순환과 공존한다. 우리의 일상 또한 흔적을 만드는 연속이다. 흔적은 대상이 지나간 자리에 남겨진 자취를 가리킨다. 그러나 지나갔다는 사실만을, 그리고 대상이 지금은 부재함을 나타낸다. 이렇듯, 현재를 통해 과거를 본다는 점에서 흔적은 시간성을 갖는다. 순환하는 시간 속에서, 연속되는 일상의 흔적은 조금씩 지워지고, 덧입혀진다. 이에 기억도 순환의 과정을 거치며 망각하거나, 특별한 추억이 된다. 결국, 일상의 흔적은 과거를 회상하는 수단이자, 매순간 기록 되어지는 삶의 기억이다. 본 연구에서는 시간의 특징을 실험 타이포그래피로 표현한다. 인간이 생각을 표출하고 전달하는 가장 객관적인 커뮤니케이션의 방법은 문자이다. 문자는 아주 오래전부터 문명의 발달과 함께 발전하였으며, 매체가 발달함에 따라 그 범위 또한 넓어져, 현대의 타이포그래피는 언어적 기능뿐만 아니라 조형적으로도 아름다움을 지닌다. 실험 타이포그래피는 여기에 ‘실험’이 가미된다. 실험을 통해 창조적인 시각 표현이 더해지면서 타이포그래피는 의사소통의 수단이라는 의미를 초월하여 그 자체가 목적이 되기도 한다. 오늘날의 실험 타이포그래피는, 단순히 언어적 의미만을 전달하는 문자의 한계를 보완하여 시각적으로 더욱 효과적인 전달을 가능케 하고, 나아가 함축적인 커뮤니케이션의 역할을 한다. 본 논문은 언어적 기능을 통한 의미의 전달과 독창적인 시각 표현을 동시에 만족시키는 실험 타이포그래피 방법을 통하여, 유한한 존재의 ‘소멸하는 삶’과 ‘순환하는 일상’이라는 시간의 특징을 시각화 하고자 한다. 작업의 소재로 일상의 흔적을 유닛(Unit)의 형태로 개발하고 시각적으로 재구성하여, 매 순간의 시간이 소멸하고 일상처럼 시간이 반복되는 것을 실험 타이포그래피를 통해 표현한다. 또한 시간성이 느껴지는 매체에 작업을 적용함으로써 실험 타이포그래피의 표현 개발 및 그 가능성을 찾아보고자 한다.;People live with a lot of experiences and memories on a certain object. And when the object perceives 'death' through extinction or absence, we recognize that the time given to us is limited and our life is not eternal. Nostalgic emotions such as dim longing, regret and futility accompanied by disappearance are the emotions of unconsciousness revealing when we realize our volatility to come in finite time. In such a finite life, it always repeats 24 hours as a day and 365 days as a year. In other words, time which is given to the being takes its course with creation and extinction like provision of nature. And also coexists with the circulation of daily life. Our everyday life also is a continuum that creates traces. A trace refers to the track of an object after it has passed. However, it only marks the fact that something has passed and does not exist now. Like this, in the sense that the past is seen through the present, traces have temporality. In circulating time, continuous traces of daily life is erased and overlapped little by little. So as memory goes through the process of circulation, it gets forgotten or becomes to a special memory. Finally, the trace of everyday life is the meaning through which the past is recalled and the memories of life is recorded every moment. This study expresses the characteristics of time with experimental typography. The most objective method of communication is characters, which humans express and deliver their thoughts. Characters have developed along with the development of civilizations from long ago and the scope has broadened as media develop, so modern typography not only has linguistic functions but also has formative beauty. Experimental typography adds ‘experiments’ to this. As creative visual expressions are added through experiments, typography transcends the meaning of communication and becomes a goal itself. Today’s experimental typography complements the limitation of characters that simply convey linguistic meanings to enable more visually effective delivery and further plays a role of implicative communication. This paper tries to visualize the characteristics of time of finite being’s ‘futile life’ and ‘circulating daily life’ through a method of experimental typography that satisfies the delivery of meanings through its linguistic functions and original visual expressions at the same time. As a project's subject, developing the trace of everyday life in a unit form as a subject of work and reconfiguring them visually, so it could be an expression of extinct time at every moment and be repetition of time like daily life through experimental typography. In addition, by applying the work to media that feels temporality, I attempt to develop the expressions of experimental typography and seek for its potentialities.
