Paradise Lost를 통해 본 Milton의 Eve관

Abstract

Two main characters of Paradise lost are Adam and Eve written in the Genesis of the Old Testament. The event that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden Fruits of the Garden attracts our curiosity and there are varied opinions and interpretation regarding the causes and consequences of this particular deeds. Milton chose Adam and Eve as his main haracters of such a Great Epic Poem. Dealing -with the story of man's disobdience against God and episode of the Fruit of the forbidden Tree, Milton characterizes Adam and EVA as he sees them on his own way. While the Scripture gives us simple and plain impressio about Adam and Eve, Milton treats them as a prototype of human being with various motives and shapes giving us a new perspective on Adam and Eve. Milton recreates the image of Eve with a deep interest by describing her as a Daughter of God and man, Mother of Mankind, and all living things, the First Mataon, and the Fairest Creation. Thus Eve appears in Milton's work as a new image. Milton accomplishes his purpose as a poet and gets across his ideas to tho world through his discription of Eve's Fall and Regeneration. Milton's Paradise Lost is not a "monument to dead idea," but a great treasurer of solution to our problems. Milton sees man's "pride" as a major cause for the destruction of our world and issued with a serious call a devout holy life. Milton effectively progresses his poem by blending Myth and Hebrew story. Milton, however, always emphasizes Christian superiority to the classical myth. He sees haman life a continous contention between irreligious pride and religious humility. Milton also sees human being as a warfaring and wayfaring Christian. With a deep interest in woman as a, co-creator of this society with man, Milton wrote Paradise Lost, with a major theme; "why a man contemplates taking a wife and why a wife contemplates gaining advantages over her husband." Milton, as a poet and Christian, offers a rembedy to the problems of human society, from those of individuals to those of human civilization, through his description on Adam and Eve, especially the latter, as main characters of his poem. Through Eva, who had confronted with the most serious and fundamental problems of human being, Milton suggests a new image and rale of woman and prescribes the meaning of 'woman's happiness. Eve in Paradise Lost, appears as a blending shape of Mary's Eve and Aphrodite's Eve, and it calls our sympathy and commiseration. Especially Milton made Eve's experiencing as a universal example of the trials and weakness of every woman. It therefore takes a way through our heart whose desire is to return to Eden. Paradise lost is not a doctrine but a literary work which is an interpretation of experience based on the fundamental human freedom, and on the influence of the Bible, the accidents, and the thinkers and the poets of the preceding generation. It appeals to us because of this particular reason. While Milton stresses his character, Eve, as a helpmate of Adam, he describes her as a sweet and gladsome partner, an intimate and speaking help, a ready and reviving associate, a conversing soul. He created Eve as a woman whom human society needs whose last and best end is Paradise Within. Furthurmore he did not make her as a easy happy growing woman. He made Eve not only a Pandora but also a regenerated woman. As a gentrix of Original sin, she experiences a great woe and desperate life; But she overcomes it with faith and love. She learns that humility and obedience are the best knowledge, and gains fortitude and patience. By depicting Eve as a regenerated woman with patience and wisdom who is willingly venture a new life with her husband, Adam, in this deposed world, Milton provides us courage and hope. Thus Milton's Eve offers us a new image of woman and becomes a powerful voice of guidance in this confused world.;Paradise Lost의 주인공은 창세기에 나오는 Adam과 Eve이다. Milton이 - Great Epic Poem의 주인공으로 Adam과 Eve를 택한 것은 곧 그들에 대한 Milton 인상의 표출이다. 따라서 Milton은 인간의 불순종과 금지된 나무의 “열매”가 어떤 것인가를 전개하면서, 자신이 택한 주제 “The better fortitude of patience and Heroic Martydom unsung"에 적합한 인물로 Adam과 Eve를 그려주고 있다. 성서의 아담과 Eve는 단순하고도 명쾌하게 out line만 그려져 있지만, Milton은 그들에게 인간의 Prototype으로서의 본질과 다양한 Motive와 speech를 줌으로서 인간의 형태와 사상을 옷입혀 그들에 대한 우리의 인상을 새롭게 해주며, 새로운 지혜를 독자에게 주고 있다. 특히 여주인공 Eve는 신과 인간의 딸, 인류와 생물의 어머니, 최초의 아내, Fairest Creation등으로 묘사하면서 깊은 관심을 가지고 새로운 여인으로 창조해 내고 있다. 그리고 그녀의 타락과 갱생을 통하여 자신이 시인으로서 독자들에게 주고자 하는 바를 달성하고 있다. Milton의 Paradise Lost는 "a monument to dead idea"가 아니라, 오늘날 우리들의 정신적 문제에 해답을 줄 수 있는 중대한 지혜의 보고( treasurer )이다. Milton은 세상을 파괴하는 근본적 이유가 pride임을 파악하고 a devout holy life로 살아야 할 것을 진정한 사명감을 가지고 토로하고 있다. Myth와 Hebrew story를 잘 결합하여 시를 효과적으로 전개하면서, 항상 Christian superiority to the classical myth를 강조하는 Milton은, 그의 종교적인 태도처럼, 인생 자체도 irreligious pride와 religious humility사이의 끊임없는 쟁투로 보았다. 그러므로 인생을 warfaring and wayfaring Christian으로 본 Milton은 그 인생길의 중요한 반려자인 여성에 깊은 관심을 갖고 "why a man contemplates taking a wife and why a wife contemplates gaining advantage over her husband"를 중요한 topic으로 하여 Paradise Lost를 전개 해나갔다. 시인이며 종교적인 입장에서 인류 문명으로부터 작게는 가정과 개개인에 이르기까지의 그 병폐를 지적하여, 주인공 Adam과 Eve를 통해서(여기에서는 특히 Eve에게 초점을 맞추었지만) 그 치료 방법을 제시하고 있는 것이다. 인류의 문제중 가장 심각하고 근본적인 문제에 당면했던 Eve를 통해서 필요한 여성상과 여성의 역할 및 여성의 진정한 행복의 의미를 제시하고 있다. 특히 Paradise Lost의 Eve의 모습은 Mary의 Eve와 Aphrodite의 Eve가 동시에 결합된 Prototype의 Eve로 나타남으로 우리의 공감을 사고 있다. 특히 Eve의 경험을 "a universal example of the trials and weakness of every woman"으로 그렸기 때문에, Eden으로 돌아가고 싶은 소망이 가슴속 깊이 깃든 인간들의 가슴에 쉽게 수용될 수 있는 것이다. Paradise Lost는 교리서가 아니라 하나의 문학 작품이며, 이 작품은 “an interpretation of experience based on the fundamental human freedom, and on the influence of the Bible, the ancients, and the thinkers and poets of the preceding genenration"이기 때문에 자유 속에서 행복을 추구하는 많은 사람들에게 깊은 공감을 주게 된다. Milton은 자신의 여주인공인 Eve의 helpmate로서의 역할을 강조하면서, 자신의 여인상인 달콤하고 상냥한 반려자, 친근감 있는 대화의 상대자, 언제나 준비가 되어 있는 힘을 불러 일으키는 협력자, 적절한 대화 가능한 영혼의 소유자로 인류의 어머니 Eve를 그림으로, 타락된 인간의 지상 목표인 Paradise Within을 추구하는 인류사회에 필요한 여성으로 창조하였다. 특히 그녀를 안온하게 자라 행복하게 된 여성으로 그리지 않고, 또 Pandora로만 그녀의 인생을 끝내지 않고, Original sin의 원조로서 겪은 깊은 고뇌와 절망속에서 신앙과 사랑으로 딛고 일어나, 겸손과 순종이 제일이라는 새로운 지혜와 강인한 의지력을 가지고, 남편 Adam과 함께 추방된 세상을 향해 첫발을 디디는 재생의 여인으로 묘사함으로써, 인간의 가슴에 용기와 희망을 준다. 때문에 Milton의 Eve관은 새로운 여성형으로 제시된 것이며 혼란된 우리 사회에 던지는 “a powerful voice of guidance"라 할 수 있다.
