영화 The Lord of the Rings에 재현된 숭고성 연구

Abstract

In The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien created the historic world of heroic characters under the influence of medieval romance, mythology and Bible. They are active in moral freedom that against the backdrop of expansive nature. The concept of sublimity that enhances the soul of human being and discovers the providence of God immanent in the Tolkien's novel, and the study of this paper is to focus on how to represent this concept through the movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings directed by Peter Jackson. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is a story of the history of a virtual world equipped with the inner consistency of reality as a product of creative imagination. It explains the morality of humans through the theme of the confrontation of good and evil, hope, death, destiny, free will, faith, and salvation and arouses deep impressions. The objective of this thesis is to focus on the concept of sublimity which arouses the rationality and moves human by enhancing the soul of the men. The concept of sublimity began from the definition of Longinus which defines that a soul would be full of exaltation and becomes united with the work by the operation of a strong internal force. The concept of sublimity portrays an educational role of expanding the limitations of judgment by impacting on the imagination and creativity of a person who is qualified to have moral reasons. Also, it acknowledges us that there is an unknown area where cannot be perceived by human intelligence, rationality and recognition. The factors which penetrate through the aforementioned concept of sublimity are as follows: first, absolute size and power reaching infinity. Second, the free will that overcomes the human instinct. Third, a terrible fear that thrills our mind. Lastly, the providence which is found at the moment of sublimity. A spectator can experience the following sublime factors from the film: at first, the spectator who confronts the object which goes beyond his imagination such as the ridge of a huge White Mountains' range or the natural object which has overwhelming power such as a waterfall of Isengard and eruption of Mount Doom reaches the transcendent thoughts which senses divine providence that rules self-purification of the Middle-Earth by extending the limitations of the judgment of recognition. Next, the hero who has moral volition leads narrative which arouses deep impression. The spectator may empathize with Aragorn who leads the history of the Middle-Earth. If the spectator sympathizes with the hero's growth, his awareness of the purpose, battle with a huge enemy, and lastly, the appearance of a hero who wins victory, he would be able to cultivate morality, which is a basic attainment to feel sublimity. Thirdly, the spectator who sympathized with the characters in the film associates the fear and pain by observing realistically demonstrated evil. At the same time, the spectator may feel delight and emotion of sublimity due to the indirect fear and pain. Finally, the great soul which transcends the dimension of sense and morality leads spectators to the transcendental world by impressing them. Eventually, Jackson represents the moral completion of the human and the providence of God through the experience of sublimity which Tolkien tried to express through Frodo, a common petit bourgeois.;J. Tolkien)은 『반지의 제왕』(The Lord of the Rings)에서 거대한 자연을 무대로 북구의 신화와 중세 로망스의 전통에 속하는 영웅적인 인물들이 도덕적 자유의지를 가지고 활약하는 역사의 세계를 창조하였다. 본 논문은 인간의 영혼을 고양시켜 섭리를 발견하는 숭고의 개념이 톨킨의 원작에 내재되어 있다고 보고, 피터 잭슨(Peter Jackson) 감독의 영화 <반지의 제왕> 3부작(2001-2003)이 영상매체를 통하여 이 개념을 재현하는 방식을 연구하는데 그 목적이 있다. 톨킨의 『반지의 제왕』은 창조적인 상상의 결과물로서 내재적 리얼리티(the inner consistency of reality)를 갖춘 가상 세계의 역사를 다룬 이야기이다. 소설은 선과 악의 대결, 희망, 죽음, 운명과 자유의지, 믿음과 구원이라는 주제를 통하여 인간의 도덕성을 고양시키고 감동을 불러일으킨다. 본 연구가 초점을 맞추고자 하는 것은 인간의 영혼을 고양시켜 이성을 환기시킴으로써 섭리를 발견케 하는 숭고의 개념이다. 숭고 개념은 강한 내부의 힘이 작용하여 영혼이 고양과 기쁨으로 충만하게 되고, 작품과 혼연일체 되는데 있다는 롱기누스(Longinus)의 정의로부터 시작되었다. 시대를 거쳐 발전해 온 숭고의 개념은 도덕적 이성의 자질을 갖춘 인간의 상상력과 창조성에 충격을 가하여 판단의 한계를 확장하는 교육적인 역할을 한다. 또한 인간의 지성과 이성, 그리고 인식으로 파악할 수 없는 초월적인 미지의 영역이 있음을 알린다. 본고에서 논의하는 숭고의 개념을 관통하는 요소는 다음과 같다. 첫 번째는 무한에 다다르는 절대적인 크기와 힘, 두 번째는 본능을 초월하는 도덕적 자유의지, 세 번째로 우리를 전율하게 만드는 강한 공포, 마지막으로 숭고의 순간에 발견하는 섭리가 바로 그것이다. 영화 <반지의 제왕>은 관객에게 다음과 같은 숭고의 체험을 가능하게 한다. 관객은 백색산맥처럼 구상력을 넘어서는 대상이나 아이센가드의 폭포나 운명산의 폭발과 같이 압도적인 위력을 가진 자연물을 보고 인식 판단의 한계를 확장하여 중간대륙의 자정작용을 관장하는 섭리를 감지하는 초월적 사유에 다다른다. 그리고 도덕적 자유의지를 갖춘 영웅은 감동을 불러일으키는 내러티브를 이끌어간다. 관객은 중간대륙의 역사를 이끌어나가는 아라곤에게 감정이입을 하게 되며 그의 성장과 목적의식, 그리고 거대한 적과의 싸움, 마지막으로 승리하는 영웅의 모습으로부터 숭고를 느낄 수 있는 기본 소양인 도덕성을 도야한다. 아울러 등장인물들에게 감정이입을 한 관객은 영상을 통하여 잘 구현된 악을 통하여 공포를 연상하고 간접적인 공포를 통하여 환희와 숭고의 감정을 느낀다. 마지막으로 감각과 도덕의 차원을 넘어선 거대한 영혼은 관객을 감동케 하여 초월적 세계로 이끈다. 영화는 톨킨이 소시민 프로도를 통해 표현하려한 인간의 도덕적 자기완성과 신의 섭리를 숭고의 체험을 통하여 재현하고 있다.
