OSCAR WILDE의 코메디 연구

Abstract

초기 작품에서 Oscar Wilde 는 허위와 위선에 가득찬 사회를 비난하고 현실도피적인 예술의 세계에서 미를 구현하기 위해 노력했다. 빅토리아 시대의 중산층의 대부분은 인생의 목적을 부의 축적에 두었으나 겉으로는 respectability를 강조함으로써 그 속물적 근성을 위장하려는 도덕적 위선과 허세에 가득차 있었다. Wilde는 이러한 현실사회를 지성의 눈으로 간파했다. 초기에는 현실과 외면하여 비판하고 현실도 피적 심미주의에 심취하였으나 후기에는 인생 그 자체의 중요성을 강조하면서 강렬하고 완전한 삶을 통한 자기완성이라는 적극적인 자세로 변신했다. Wilde의 코메디의 특징은 역설과 대비의 묘가 두드러진다는 점을 들 수 있다. 작가의 변신이자 대변자인 "dandy"적인 인물과 빅토리아 시대의 중산층을 가리키는 "puritan"적인 인물을 대칭적으로 등장시키면서 Wilde는 전위적이고 현실을 부정하며 부도덕한 인물인 "dandy"가 오히려 지나치게 이상적이고 도덕적인 "puritan"을 교육시킨다는 역설을 보여 준다. Lady Windermere's Fan에서 이른바 "good woman" 인 Lady Windermere가 지나치게 "puritan" 적이어서 처하게 된 곤경에서 소위 "bad woman"인 Mrs.Erlynne의 도움으로 구출된다는 역설이 보인다. "Puritan"이 지나치게 양심적인 자세를 지키려드는 것은 스스로를 올바르게 보지못하는 자기기만과 사물에 대한 통찰력의 부족임을 시사한다. A woman of No Importance에서는 쾌락을 즐기고 부도덕한 "dandy"로서 Lord Illingworth를 등장시키고 이 부도덕한 "dandy"에게 피해를 입은 몇 사람의 "puritan"의 사리분별없는 감상주의와 지나친 양심으로 인한 상식적 사고력의 결핍, 이기주의를 지적한다. 즉 "puritan"적인 양심을 지닌 Mrs.Arbuthnot은 자신의 과거로 자학적인 심경에서 아들 Gerald의 미래를 구속하려든다. 이러한 감상적인 회개의 생활은 다른 "puritan"인 Hester Worsley의 존경을 불러일으키고 Hester는 Gerald와 결혼하고 Mrs.Arbuthnot에게 Lord Illingworth를 피하여 미국으로 떠날 것을 권유할 때 MrS.Arbuthnot의 수도적인 생활이 단지 감상주의적인 생각임이 드러나게 된다. An Ideal Husband의 "puritan"으로 등장하는 Lady Chiltern은 남편 Sir Robert의 인간성을 파악하지 못하고 허황된 이상 속의 그를 사랑하는 실책을 범한다. Wilde는 "dandy"로 등장시킨 Lord Goring의 입을 통하여 타인의 결점까지 사랑할 수 있는 생활태도의 중요성을 강조하고 있다. Wild의 걸작인 The Importance of Being Earnest에서는 "puritan"적인 인물이 주인공으로 등장하지 않는다. 이 극은 "Ernest"의 중요함을 말해주는데 "dandy"인 Jack과 Algy는 "Ernest"로 대변되어 있는 진실된 자기모습을 찾기 위해서 거짓말을 한다. 이 거짓말이 진실로 변함으로써 "puritan"에게 삶의 중요성을 가르치는 "dandy"라는 역설적인 존재를 긍정적으로 제시하고 있다. 이상의 작품에서 작가는 빅토리아 시대의 중산증을 "puritan"으로 등장시키고 "dandy"를 빌어서 그의 예술관과 사상을 개진하는데 이 "dandy"들의 성격변천이 바로 Wilde의 예술관의 변화 과정과도 같다. 초기의 현실도피적 심미예술을 추구하는 입장일 때의 "dandy"는 "puritan"을 비난하고 공격하는 비판력만 있을 뿐 포용력과 건전한 정신을 지니지 않는 소위 "false dandy"였으나 후기의 이른바 "true dandy"는 비판력과 "false dandy"에서 보이지 않는 인간적인 포용력을 지니고 있다. 곧 Wilde의 인생에 대한 적극적인 자세 변화를 의미한다. ;Throughout his comedies Oscar Wilde attacks the hypocrisyfalsehood, and pretense of his Victorian age, which was dominated by the material-minded, philistine middle class which adhere to accumulate more material goods with a hope of gilding their greediness with the aristocratic touch of respectability. In a revolt against the philistine morality, Wilde seeks to live in an aesthetic world which he has created. Wilde's aesthetic views changes from the early escapism manifested in The Picture of Dorian Gray and Salome through the satirial attacks upon the phlistine taste of his age to the more mature concept of art as a means of saif-fulfillment. This change can be traced in the creation of "dandy" and "puritan" characters in his four comedies. The "puritan" characters in Wilde's comedies represent the philistine middle class moralists, whereas the "dandy" characters, who are the embodiment of the writer himself as well as the mask which the writer uses to disguise his true personality, function as satirize or criticize the seemingly goodness and earnestness of the philistine moralists. Thus the charm of Wilde's comedies lies in the paradoxical treatment of "dandy" characters who seem to be amoral, anti-social, or bad people, as an ideal type of characters in his own age. In Lady Windermere's Fan, the so-called "good" woman, Lady Windermere save her honour and good name through the help of the so-called "bad" woman. In this play Wilde points out the stubborn and conscientious attitude of the "puritan" characters lead them to self-deception. In A Woman of No Importance and An Ideal Husband, Wilde shows the "puritan" characters who are in the strong fetters of middle-class morality as too sentimental, too selfish to see through the reality of life. Wilde also presents two types of "dandy" characters: the "false dandy" and the "true dandy". The "false candy" charcters are the intellectual fops who twist the puritan stupidity by witty conversations, but are incapable of having genuine human feelings. And it is the "true dandy" characters endowed with intellect and humane feeling who Oscar Wilde regards as an ideal type and whom he draws in his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest. In this play two pairs of young people achieve self-realization through living earnestly. Through the creation of "true dandy", Wilde's change in his aesthetic view from the negative escapism to the affirmative, encompassing attitude toward life is manifested.
