Abstract

F. Scott Fitzgerald의 작품 중 This Side of Paradise와 The Great Gatsby는 그 주제의 형성 과정에 있어서 작가의 수법의 각기 다른 면모를 보여 준다. 그러한 기법의 변화는 작가의 소설 창작에 대한 심미적 관심을 보여 주며, 따라서 그것은 예술에 있어서의 발전적 변화를 의미하는 것이 된다. 1920년 출판된 This Side of Paradise는 그의 첫 작품으로서 많은 에피소드로 구성된, 유기적 총체성이 결여된, 산만한 삽화적 구성을 지닌다. 즉 삽화들은 작품 자체 內에서 일련의 법칙을 가지고서 전체적 구성을 위해 긴밀히 연결되어 있는 것이 아니라, 단편적으로 등장하여 단순한 접합체들로서 평면적 구성의 양상을 띤다. 작품은 거의 자서전적으로 기록되며 안물의 성격과 행동은 유기적 인간관계에 의해 유지·발전되는 것이 아니라 여러 가지 사건들에 부딪칠 때 생겨나는 반사적인 반응들의 나열로 되어 있다. 이러한 산만한 삽화 구성의 작품에서, 면밀하고 간결한 구성올 지니는 The Great Gatsby에로의 기법의 변화는 Fitzgerald의 소설 기법에 대한 예술적 관심을 보여 준다. 實로 그는 The Great Gatsby를 쓸 즈음에 "something … intricately patterned"한 작품을 쓰길 원했던 것이다. 그리하여 Fitzgerald는 작가의 소재에 대한 통제―"sense of selection"―의 필요성을 피력하여 소설 작품의 심미적 윤곽 즉 총체성을 주장하기에 이르게 된다. 이러한 그의 태도는 The Great Gatsby에서 실제로 구현되고 있다. This Side of Paradise에서 작가와 주인공과의 밀착된 관계가 The Great Gatsby에서는 결별된 관계로 나타난다. 이것은 話者의 설정에 의해 얻어지는 효과이다. 인물들은 話者의 생각과 눈을 통해 여과되어 제시된다. 話者의 방관자적·관찰자적 태도는 작가와 인물들과의 거리를 유지시키게 하는 요소이며 따라서 그의 눈을 통해 얻어지는 발견은 객관성을 띠게 되는 것이다. 한 작가의 작품들에서 相反되는 구조적 양상을 지니는 두 개의 작품 ―This Side of Paradise와 The Great Gatsby―을 택하여 그 구성과 주제의 발전을 살펴 본다. 동일한 작가의 작품에서, 대조되는 두 구조적 양상이 발견됨은 흥미로운 것이며, 그 相反의 의미는 동일선상에서의 대조 뿐만 아니라 기법의 발전을 내포하고 있다. 이러한 점으로 미루어 보아 작가 Fitzgerald를 연구·이해하는 의의는 크다 하겠다. 또한 이러한 기업의 발전은 전후 세대에 있어서 작가들의 한 양상이던 사회로부터의 이탈과 관계 있으며 이것이 작품에서는 작가의 주인공과의 분리로 나타나기도 했다고 볼 수 있겠다. 이러한 경향은 Fitzgerald 작품세계의 기법의 변화가 그 자신만의 것이라고는 볼 수 없고 시대적 영향과 관련되어 있음올 말해준다. 두 작품의 주제와 구성을 통해 파악되는 기법의 相異性, 그리고 결론적으로 그것에 시대적·전통적 의미를 부여하여 작가의 미국 작가로서의 전통적인 자리를 규명하려 함이 筆者의 기본 입장이다. ;The two-This Side of Paradis (1920) and The Great Gatsby (1925)-among Fitzgerald's novels particularly show their own uniqueness respectively in the process of thematic formation. This movement from one to another method implies the growth of aesthetic concern in writing a creative work. For studying the thematic formation of the two novels I'd like to mention the 'abstract frame' which is nearly the same as the thematic structure. The 'thematic structure' here I am using should be understood as a sort of an abstract frame in a novel. And it should be noted that the abstract frame has a quantative implication since any kind of frame has its own contents inside it, whether it is compact or discursive. Here in my study I wanted to grasp the abstract frames with their contents through the two novels. As I said before they show their own unique abstract frames in the course of establishing the theme. This Side of Paradise which was published in 1920 is Fitzgerald's first novel and is consisted of many episodes. Those episodes build a sort of discursive form in the novel, lacking of a wholeness in structure. They are not closely related for the whole unified structure but loosened fragmentarily as a discursive form. Furthermore, since this novel mainly depends on the author's early life the hero and the author tend to be mingled with each other(that means an autobiographical characteristic) and such relationship between them can not achieve the effective objectivity because of the attachment. And the characters and the incidents in the novel are not maintained and developed by the organic casuality. After publishing This Side of Paradise Fitzgerald gradually concerned in artistic contour in writing novels. Such a change from the discursive, episodic contour to the selective and organic one means Fitzgerald's aesthetic concern in technical matter. At the time of writing The Great Gatsby he really wanted to write "something...... intricately patterned" one, And then he expressed his idea of an author's "sanse of selection" which should be required to the novelists. His words-"sense of selection"- suggest the author's ability to control the raw materials according to the idea of an aesthetic creativity. Such an idea of "sense of selection" Was realized as a compact form in The Great Gatsby. The closely attached relationship between the author and the hero in This Side of Paradise is transformed into the detached dissociative relationship between them in The Great Gatsby. This-the dissociation between them-is made by the creation of narrator. All the characters, actions and incidents are shown through being filtered by the narrator's eyes and thoughts. The narrator's observative attitude is the element which sustain a certain distance from the other characters. Functions such as the filtering and the maintaining a certain distance can make the novel keep an objectivity. The fact that we can find the two contrary thematic formations in the novels of the same author is really a meaningful point. And the word "contrary" I use here does not only mean the comparison at the same level but contain the implication of development. Then we can ask ourselves that what could cause such change in technical matter. Here I would say, first, the author's aesthetic idea on creative works became maturer than ever before. It is a question of the author's inner desire. Next, I'd suggest what could give an impetus to the author's inner desire. Here again, I think that the concern in the literary circumstances and in the historical background would be of help to the latter question. The young generation of 1920's felt a disillusionment from the World War I, and they thought they lost their own youth because of the war. So the lost generation showed a tendency of isolating themselves from society. Such a social phenomenon could be related to the tendency of dissociation between the hero and the author in the creative works. Here, the "dissociation" means a detached relation between them. Gathering from these facts we can say that the change in Fitzgerald's way of handling the materials would not merely be the result from his own maturity as an individual novelist but also be the one from the social tendency of that time which Shows the dissociative relationship between the individual and the society. As a result, through those two different abstract frames in the process of thematic formation we can get a meaningfulness in the very fact of the technical alteration of F.S. Fitzgerald.
