Abstract
Making pottery using a colored body was originated in ancient Egypt. In the 18th century the Parian Poreelain and the Jasper Porcelain were made . Ware using the marbling effect by means of the colored body was called "Marble Ware" or "Agate Ware". In China, "Gyotaido" was also made by using the marble effect. But in Korea, a few "Yeonrimun Jagi" were made in the early Koryeo Dynasty. Nowadays the techniques using the colored body, such as Neriage, Millefieore and Marbling are various. The Egyptian paste is one of the colored boor which includes the effect of glaze. This study is about the colored clay body of the "Koryeo Yeonrimun Jagi". The different colors were compared and examined by adding the metal oxides as the coloring reagents --CoO, Cr₂O₃, CuO, Fe₂O₃, MnO₂, NiO -- to the white porcelain body. In the first experiment, one component was used as the coloring reagent, whereas in the second experiment two component were used. To compare the differences of colors owing to the firing temperatures and the firing atmosphere the electric furnace was held at the temperatures of 900, 1000, 1001, 1200 and 1300℃, and in the Kerosene down draft kiln at 1280℃. To search for the color effects, the unglazed-body and the glazed-body were sintered in the Kerosene down draft kiln. The results of the experiment were as follows; 1. The influence of NiO with other colorants reagents was small. But CoO and Cr₂O₃ gave a fine color. Excess MnO₂gave spots when it was fired at the high temperature. 2. Up to 1100℃, the colors were bright, but above 1200℃ the colors darkened remarkably. At 1300℃, the surface was bloated due to the excess firing temperature. 3. The firing atmosphere had littls effect on the color, with CuO being the exception. 4. The glazed test pieces were brighter than the unglazed test pieces. According to the results of the experiment, the colored bodies representing fine colors were applied to the works. As a result, the more delicate tone was given to the works with body colorants rather than the colored-glaze and the engobe. A natural pattern was obtained from the change of the layers of the colored body. This gave a fresh texture. And the possibility of a new decorating technique, which is somewhat different from inlay decoration was found by using one colored body on top of another.
