Abstract

Faulkner is deeply committed to Southern locality. The background of most of his novels is Yoknapatawpha County, the mythical kingdom, whose model is author's hometown, Oxford. Southern elements are all a part of the characters themselves in his novels, thought and behaviour of them are based on the long Southern context. After the defeat in the Civil War, Northern materialism corrupted Southern moral values and forced Southerners to deteriorate in moral confusion. The sound and the Fury, Sanctuary, Requiem for a Nun are the novels whose female characters are the symbol of Southern degradation after the defeat in the Civil War. Women characters in these three novels can be divided into three categories. First of all, there are female characters who maintain the false pride as a lady such as Mrs. Compson and Narcissa. However, their inner spiritual world is deteriorated by the immoral materialism of New South. They are far from ideal noble lady after all. Second type of characters are such as Caddy and Temple Drake. They responds to the evil of their - the evil that always existed beneath tile deceptive trappings of convention and social status. After the loss of virginity by Dalton Ames, Caddy falls in sexual love with several other men in despair and escaped from the morality of her family and Southern society. Temple, not conscious of her guilt, willingly falls in physical love with Red. Her extreme physical corruption disappoints Horace Benbow who succeeds to romantic attitude toward the female purity and spiritual beauty. He merely discovers that evil resides in the Sanctuary, the temple, the dwelling place of purity and innocence - woman. The spiritual degradation of Mrs. Compson and Narcissa with the physical deterioration of Caddy and Temple are all originated in the moral collapse of Southern society. The problem is not merely a problem of the South, but is also a problem which is common to our modern world. The modern world is in moral confusion. Third is the female characters like Dilsey and Ruby who can prevail human crisis. These women have a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. Dilsey's self - sacrificial love is in dramatic contrast to the pride and self - interest of the Compsons. She is the only person who has a soul capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance in Compson family. Ruby, with her passionate love for Goodwin, is one of the few wholly admirable characters in Sanctuary, and it is largely by comparison with the bigotry, hypocrisy, cruelty, self - righteousness of Yoknapatawpha residents. Southern condition in these three novels in very serious. Ruby는 위선, 편견, 타산적 비열함에 물든 Yoknapatawpha County주민들 중 유일하게 희생적 사랑의 능력을 지닌 인물이다. 위의 세 작품에 나타난 남부적 상황은 매우 절망적이다. 그러나 Faulkner는 Ruby, Dilsey와 같은 인물을 통하여, 이러한 절망 상태에도 불구하고, 人間이 모성적 미덕, 즉 자비심, 희생, 인내의 정신으로 인류의 위기를 극복하리라는 作家의 신념을 표면화시키고 있다.
