THE VICTIM OF IDEA

Abstract

William Shakespeare는 Plutarch의 The Lives of the Noble Grecians & Romans의 North 영역본에 의거하여 세편의 로마비극 Julius Caesar(1597), Antony & Cleopatra(1606) 및 Coriolamus(1606)를 썼다. 본 논문에서는 Julius Caesar와 Coriolanus의 두 작품을 택하여 ‘The Victim of Idea'라는 관점하에 Brutus와 Coriolanus에 초점을 맞추어 분석하였다. Brutus가 지키과 하였던 이념은 Plato 사상이 가미된 Stoa사상과 폭군 Tarquin을 몰아 내는데 큰 역할을 한 Brutus가 문의 후예라는 자부심과 명예심으로 구성되어 있다. 그는 이러한 사상을 바탕으로 하여 로마 민중의 복리를 Caeser 암살의 대의 명분으로써 내세운다. 그런데 Brutus의 타인에게 숭앙을 받을 정도로 고결한 인격은 사물의 실상을 간파하지 못하는 비현실적이고 따라서 치명적인 허점을 지니고 있다. 한편 Coriolanus는 전쟁터에 나가 용감히 행동한다는 Martial Valor를 자신의 행동 지침으로 삼는다. 그같은 완벽한 Martial Valor 추구로 인해 그는 인간이 모여 이룬 사회 집단에서 무난히 살아가기 힘든 부적합한 인물이 된다. 결국 그는 이념을 추구하다가 고국인 로마에서 역적으로 몰리게 되고, 다시 새 삶을 영위하기 위해 찾아간 Volsce에서 조차 역적이 된다. Brutus 와 Coriolanus의 이념들은 그 원칙에 있어 주위 사람들로 부터 그 진가를 인정받지만 그들의 타협함이 없는 이념 추구의 자세는 범속한 삶을 영위하는 세상 사람들과는 어울릴 수 없는 고고한 성질의 것이며 따라서 이들은 현실 감각이 결여된채 사회와의 융화나 화해를 이루지 못하고 꺾여 버리게 된다. 본 논문에서는 Brutus와 Coriolanus가 지닌 이념의 성격을 고루 알아보고 그에 의거하여 그 이념에 내재한 모순이 현실에서 두사람에게 가져오는 좌절의 제 양상을 추적하였다. 동시에 그러한 재앙에도 불구하고 마지막 순간까지 자신의 신념을 고수하는 두 인물의 자세를 'The Victim of Idea'라는 동일범주에 넣어 분석하였 다. Brutus와 Coriolanus는 비록 자기가 생의 원칙으로 삼았던 이념의 제물이 되고 물리적 세계에서는 패자가 되지만 그들이 지켜온 스스로의 신념에 대한 확신에는 흔들림이 없다. 그리하여 그들의 이념이 무리없이, 통용될 수 있는 A World Elsewhere'는 상황에 따라 융통성있게 행동하여야 하는 상대적 가치의 현실 세계에서는 실현 불가능이며, 오로지 두 사람의 절대적 이념을 추구하고자 하는 정신세계에서만 가능하다고 결론지었다.;William Shakespeare wrote three Roman Tragedies Julius Caesar (1597), Antony & Cleopatra (1606), & Coriolanus (1606) which were based on Plutarch's The Lives of the Noble Grecians & Romans. In this thesis I have analyzed Julius Caesar & Coriolanus, focusing on the theme of 'The Victim of Idea' represented in the characterization of Brutus & Coriolanus. The idea of Brutus is that of stoicism tinged with platonism & honor. Brutus takes the general good for the Romans as his cause for the murder of Caesar. However, his impracticality prevents him from understanding the mob psychology. On the other hand, Coriolanus regards 'Martial Valor' as the highest virtue in life. Coriolanus' too absolute 'Martial Valor' drives him to self-sufficiency, & in keeping this idea, Coriolanus even becomes a traitor to his native country, Rome. Principally the I leas of Brutus & Coriolanus are recognized to be noble by follow-Romans. Trapped by their own too noble ideas for this world, two protagonists cannot see social reality as it is & as a result cannot act efficitively in this world. This thesis is an attempt to study ho their ideas entrap the noble heroes through the process of break-down of ideas and their changeless allegiance to their ideas. Although Brutus & Coriolanus become the victims of ideas, & are frustrated in this physical world, they were sure of their ideas. Adhering to these, two protagonists find "A World Elsewhere" fitted for them in their own spirits.
