The Problem of Transparency in the Korean Economy

Abstract

그간 한국 경제의 주축이 되어왔던 재벌들의 붕괴와 함께 1997년 한국 경제는 총체적인 위기를 맞아 국제통화기금(IMF)의 처방을 받아야 하는 지경에 이르렀다. 이에 저자는 한국경제위기가 금융기관의 투명성 결핍과 깊은 연관이 있다는 판단하에 이 논문을 통해 한국 경제의 투명성에 대해 고찰해 보고자 하였으며, 특히 한국 금융기관의 문제점들을 집중적으로 연구하였다. 한국의 금융기관의 문제점은 정부의 허술한 관리에서 비롯되었다. 허술한 금융계의 관리는 기관의 투명성 결핍을 낳고 이는 경제 위기시 국채인상을 야기시킨다. 이러한 이유로 인하여 경제위기가 닥쳐왔다는 결과를 증명하고자 한다 이 논문은 또한, 투명성 결핍이 한국의 경제위기와 직접적인 연관이 있고 이 투명성 결핍이 한국경제에 갚게 정착되어 있었고 정부와 기업들의 관리 방법에 있어서도 문제가 되어왔음을 증명하고자 한다.;The year of 1997 saw Korea's Chaebols collapse on after another and finally of the economy itself, which lead to Korea's situation of having to ask for the IMF emergency loan. This thesis will take an in-depth look at the Korean economy and the reasons for the current crisis in relation to the problem of transparency (the lack of) that the Korean government as well as the corporations are showing. The focus is on the banking systems of the Korean economy. The inadequate supervision of financial institutions lead to the fall of the Korean economy. I argue that weak transparency increases funding costs, especially in times of financial distress. This thesis also aims to take a closer look at the issues of 'transparency' in relation to the economy and the effects it had on it. The current economic crisis has its roots deeply embedded in the fact that Korea lacks transparency in managing its' government and private sectors. Starting with the history of the rise and fall of the Korean economy, I will focus later on in the thesis with the issues mentioned above.
