Abstract
It is said that the sewing instruments during the Yi dynasty had developed variously in shape and decoration from those fundamental ones considered to have already been used in this country in the stone age. Therefore, mainly through the real objects of the Yi dynasty, I have researched into the shapes of sewing instruments of those days and the patterns and materials used in them. Except some metallic instruments as they were almost made of the materials which easily get rotten and very rarely remained as antiques, I could only get ones used in the latter part of the middle age of the Yi dynasty in general. However, because they kept the traditional forms from olden times rather faithfully as a certain kind of folk utensils, through the materials collected I could guess what they were like in the earlier times by analogy. But, fortunately the reference to the measure for measuring cloths could be found in the old records, therefore I could arrange the module changed from the earlier days. In the sewing instruments used in the Yi dynasty, there were needle, scissors, thimble including measuring instruments --- common measure and quilting measure,In addition to these compulsory utensils, there were many other instruments for arranging them. They were a spool, a reel, thread paper, and thread box for arranging threads; a needle book, a trinket-like needle case for keeping needles; a housewife, a needlework basket, or needlework box in which the whole instruments were arranged. And there were also ironing instruments --- a Korean hot-iron called 'indoo,' an ironing board, and an iron which is round and rather large than the hot-iron. The designs used in them are substantially similar to those of the contemporary furniture. As they often carved ten acrogenic things' patterns desiring for a long life, bats meaning for five kinds of felicity, or letter patterns standing for lucky omen, they showed their strong idea of lucky omen. And because the sewing instrument is a daily necessary for woman in itself, there naturally used pretty flower and butterfly designs those of mandarin ducks. Though the wood, even the material wood was used, used generally in makng sewing instruments, they also decorated spool, measure, quilting; measure, and housewife with nacred lacquer or delicate flower designs. And the needlework-basket and the thread reel were made of wickers twisted, the needlework box and thread paper were make of folded sheets of white Korean paper or Korean paper called 'Jangji.' They used silverware, nickel, and buffalo horn in making needle case, and they decorated the needle book with embroidery. And some of the Korean hot-irons and iron made of pie iron, and braziers made of brass, nickel, bronze, or iron were carved fine stripes so-called silvery line or copper line.
