William Faulkner was deeply interested in the Southern areas of America where he was born and reared. Thus the South appeared in the most of his works as background under the name of Yoknapatawpha county which he created from his home county, Lafayette. In this "little postage stamp of earth" Faulkner creates many tragic figures with his strong interest in the Southern, heritage and human heart. In this thesis, I am going to study the tragic senses of his four major tragic protagonists, John Sartoris, Thomas Sutpen, Quentin Compson and Joe Christmas, through their human experiences, by detailed discussions of each character related with the tragic situation of the South, with the concepts of tragedy he uses and with his concern about human heart and examine how he can create the outstanding tragic figures with these elements. The Southern society of America was established under the robbery of Indian and the sweat of negroes. It has had the seed of evil, the slavery and the South was defeated at the Civil War. Thus the old order was changed into new one. But these changes occur only outwardly. The mind of the old South still remained, so that the South became confused and corrupted. Faulkner creates many eminent tragic figures with this tragic history of the South. John Sartoris is one of the brave pioneers who settle the Old South. He has valor, courage, and nobility in abundance. But these virtues become monstrous vices as he has given himself to protect the Lost Cause of the Old South after the war. His tragedy symbolizes the South which is not suited to the new order and can not adjust to the changed conditions of Reconstruction. To restore his lost individuality Thomas Sutpen comes to the South with his grand "design" and makes efforts to fulfil his plans. He prospers. He has the biggest plantation in the county, a son and daughter. But he meets his doom as the result of his own crime against, humanity. His whole life mirrors the history of the South. The crime against humanity brings Sutpen to a violent, end as it brings the South to the same end. Joe and Quentin are the modern heroes of the South who fail to attain to self-redemption. Quentin tries, in vain, to give significant meaning to the meaningless downfall of his family. Joe struggles to get, self-definition only to fail. They suffer and die under the condition doomed by their ancestor's guilt. They die for the redemption. Through these figures Faulkner describes the South as a tragic protagonist. Faulkner uses both classical and modern concepts of tragedy in his figures. The classical tragic hero is a human being like ourselves but exceptionally fortunate and reasonably good and humane, but he plunges to catastrophe through an error of judgement or flaw of character. The modern tragic hero arouses overwhelming compassion and an almost inconsolable feeling of loss. In the tragedy of Sartoris and Sutpen, Faulkner uses classical concepts of tragedy. Quentin and Christmas are modern tragic heroes as they reflect us in their tragedy. He takes various concepts of tragedy and makes the tragedy of figures not the limited ones which represent specific human experience of specific region but the universal ones. Faulkner constantly points out his concern about, the virtues of human heart while he writes about the tragedy of the South. Sartoris and Sutpen's tragedies are fundamentally caused by their lacks of compassions. Quentin's failure of self-redeption basically comes from the inability of love. The tragedy of Christmas lies on his attempt, to be recognized not as an abstraction but as an individual. Faulkner's central concern is with the human heart and it is emphasized the more by the tragic atmosphere he gives to his figures.;William Faulkner
