Abstract
The American novel has had contradictions from the foundation of America as a democratic and ideal nation. These contradictions resulted from America's particular historical situations. Especially, the romance in America was characteristic of American literature and reflected her contradictions well, and these contradictions were often represented ambiguously. Herman Melville wrote during a period of rapid expansion in size, wealth, and power of America in the nineteenth century. He saw the evil and darkness in spite of the widespread optimism of the country. Strongly feeling the contradictions and ambivalences in his country, he tried to discover reality for himself and for America. Melville began to realize that outer fact and inner reality are different and this is represented through Pierre. Pierre is one of Melville's later novels and it is a kind of American romance. Pierre has the characteristics of the romance in many ways as I have examined: 1) the nature of the hero; 2) two-dimensional types of character; 3) setting and plot; 4) love and morality; and 5) individualism, each considered with many aspects of ambiguity. Ambiguity is also an element of the American romance and this ambiguity appears throughout the story with the quest for reality. Besides being a romance, Pierre has aspects of the modern novel--conflict with inscrutable reality, ambiguities, and the examination of the psychological inner mind. All things are flexible and complex in modern times, so man's definitions and beliefs are relative; therefore, it is difficult to provide man a definite meaning. In this situation, reality itself can not but be ambiguous. Melville was far ahead of his time. By trying to reveal reality itself, he used the romance and the result has also the aspects of modern novel. In this respect, he is worthy to be considered a progenitor of all modern writers.;미국의 로맨스는 상상력의 자유를 증명하려는 작가들의 표현으로서, 미국이 국가건설 과정에서 경험했던 무질서, 소외, 모순을 다루고 있는 특수한 미적형식이다.
