Abstract
Woman Divers' song of Cheju Island, the southern-most province of Korea, has been sung with rowing when they sail for or come back from the working place in the sea and handed down orally. The song which is sung for giving an amusement to rowing action takes the form of exchanges of leading chorus and responding one, and there comes to appear a heterophony between two parts of sounds. In this thesis, I will study the musical characteristics of woman divers' song with an emphasis upon its heterophonic feature. As research materials, I have collected recording tapes of woman divers' song and selected some crucial ones recorded at different regions for the objects of this study. To them, what I recorded is added for the study of heterophony. Also, for the comparative study with the other music having the heterophonic feature, I referred to Professor Kim Soon Jae's treatise titled "A Musical Analysis of the Hangang Sheseon BoatIng Song" which is contained in Artides on Asian Music Festschrift for Dr. Chang Sa Hoon, and the music of the mixed chorus of men and women of "Tae Pyung Ga (a song of peace)" which is contained in the second and the third volume of the Complete Collection of Korean Music, Man Nyeon Chang Hwan edited by Kim Ki Soo. Woman Divers' song is made of melody which is comparatively fixed simple and impromptu story, and it is sung as long as needed for working. Like this, its melody is based on a impromptu feature. The melody consists of five notes; Do, Re, Mi, Sol, La, and as for its progress, the 2?(neighboring one) is dominant. Especially, the refrain sung by the 2? takes form of musical phrases in each piece, and it exists as a kind of unified element. Besides, there is the 3? and the 4? progress and the latter often accompanies passing tones. In its rhythm, as the working action of woman divers itself leads a general rhythm, it takes the very regular form of 4/8 and 4/8 in general. Heterophony shown in woman divers' song is based on impromptu feature. Also, accidental heterophony may happen due to the discord of pitch among singers and their lack of musical train. The distinct aspect of heterophony shown in woman divers' song is the mode of melisma. Especially, the melisma form conveys one kind of effect of drone. And the progress of heterophony moves around unison or refrain. Hangang Shiseon Boating Song takes the musical scale of four notes --La, Do, Re, Mi-- and as the progress of melody, it shows connected form of Tetrachord like La-Mi and Re-La. In particular, the refrain of Tetrachord is in contrast with that of 2?. As for its heterophonic feature, it depends only upon the fixed refrain, so it is verv monotonous when compared with woman divers' song. The mode of melisma can be seen here, too, and the refrain shows an effect of drone. Finally, it can be said that the diversity of rhythm in heterophony shown by the mixed chorus of men and women of a lyric song, "Tae Pyung Ga (a song of peace)" or its wide progress of melody goes far ahead of general Korean folk songs. Here also, the mode of melisma appears.
