Robert Frost

Abstract

Robert Frost wrote of his people and nature in so vivid and familiar a way to us that we feel we have already known them as our neighbors. His style is simple and direct and we can understand his poetry without any difficulties. The universality and familiarity in his poems have gained a steady favour of a large number of readers throughout the world. Frost described nature as the human environment and his main interest in nature was concerning with the inner experiences of men. Frost sees two paradoxical aspects in one thing. The two are inseparably in one thing. He accepts the present reality as it is, the contradiction of the opposites, and his wisdom lies in his acceptance of the paradoxes altogether. Frost embraces the present world as it is and loves ordinary things, whose attitude toward life is firmly rooted on this earth, confessing; "Earth's the right place for love: / I don't know where it's likely to go better." ;Robert Frost의 시는 New England지방의 자연과 그곳 주민들의 생활을 대상으로 하여 이들을 사실적으로 생생하게 묘사하고 있다. 자연은 인간의 환경으로서 존재의의가 있다고 보는 Frost는 자연을 읊으면서도 그의 관심의 촛점은 인간의 내적 경험묘사에 있다. 그의 인물들은 어디까지나 현실에서 벗어나지 않고 있다. 환상을 추구하는 대신에 이들은 매일매일의 생활에 충실하려하고, 곤궁과 좌절의 역경속에서도 버티어 나갈 줄 아는 사람들이다. Frost는 서로 뗄 수 없이 하나가 된, 모순들로 얽힌 현실을 직시하고 있다. 그가 파악한 현실은 자연과 인간과의 대립, 인간과 인간과의 대립·모순으로 가득차 있다. 필연적으로 불가분의 관계에 있는 이들 모순을 Frost는 솔직히 받아들이며, 그 안에서 조화와 균형을 모색하고 있다. 여기서 우리는 Frost의 시의 특이성과 그의 폭넓은 태도를 볼 수 있다.
