Joseph Conrad의 作品에서 본 女性의 役割

Abstract

인간의 본질의 탐구를 통해 내적 갈등을 그린 Conrad 는 인간이 살아가야 할 이상과 가치를 추구한다. 그는 인간이 존속되기 위해서 인류는 성실성 ( fidelity )을 바탕으로 하여 인류의 유대의식 ( solidarity ) 에 근접해야 한다는 것이 그의 생각이며, 이를 이상적 가치로 작품에서 추구하고 있다. 이상적 가치를 추구하였지만, 그의 문학관에는 회의주의가 있다. 19C의 진화론의 영향과 그의 생활에서 나온 철학에서 기인한 것이다. 세계를 있는 그대로 보았기에, 세계가 가지는 惡의 존재를 감지하고 있으며, 인간의 한계성과 함께, 인간 내면에 잠재해 있는 惡의 존재가 표출될 수 있음을 알고 있는작가였다. 그가 추구한 성설성( fidelity ) 의 세계에는 초기와 후기에 걸쳐 접근하는 태도가 달라지고 있다. 초기에는 개인과 사회간의 성실성의 추구를 주제로 하였고 후기에는 개인과 개인간의 성실성, 즉 사랑을 주제로 하였다. 초기에는 남자를 주인공으로 하여 그의 성실성을 향하는 이상적 자아와 내면의 또 다른 자아가 한계상황, 위기에 처하였을 때 갈등을 일으켜 도덕적 실패를 하고 있다. Conrad의 주인공들의 이 도덕적 실패는 곧 그들의 명예와 연결되는 바, 명예를 회복하고 이상적 자아의 실현을 위하여 모든것을 희생한다. 따라서 여자나 사랑은 이에 위협적인 존재로 나타나는 바,Heart of Darknsss, Lord. JIm 등에서 여자가 진실을 이해 못하며 무지의 존재로써 이상주의를 이해 못함으로써 남자에게 위협적인 존재이며 성실성 수행에 파괴적인 힘을 미친다고 나타나 있다. 또한 여자나 사랑은 존속적인 주제로 후반이나 일부분에 나오고 있으나 이들이 갖는 의미를 무시할 수는 없다.Mostromo 에서는 정치적, 사회적 문제를 다루면서, 인물들의 도덕적 이상주의와 물질주의간의 갈등, 이상과 현실간의 배반등을 폭넓게 다루었다. 그가 초기에 인간의 내면을 가장 잘 파악할 수 있다고 생각하던 고립된 좁은 사회가 아니라, 사회의 축도를 통해 인간의 본질을 파헤치고 있다. 이상적 자아와내면의 자아와의 갈등, 도덕적 실패등은 초기와 같으나, 그가창조한 Emilia Gould를 통해 Conrad 의 여성관이 변하고 있음을 알 수 있다. Emilia Gould는 무지의 존재가 아니며, 아름다운 세계뿐만이 아니라, 현실의 惡의 존재까지도 인식한다. 그녀는 지적, 정신적으로 고취하며, 여성특유의 부드러움과 따뜻함으로 남성을 바쳐주는 지주와 같은 人物로써 완전한 여성의 개념에 가깝다. 그녀도 처음에는 現實을 직시하지는 못하였으나, 그녀의 지극한 사랑을 통해서 모순되게도, 그녀의 가정의 불모성을 깨닫는다. 물질주의가 가지는 비리의 惡을 보게 되며 남편의 참모습을 보게 된다. 이를 통하여 人生의 본질적 의미를 깨닫는바, 그녀의 폭 넓은 人間性과 깊은 성찰에서 나온 것이다. 그러나 Emilia는 惡이 그녀의 남편에게 미치는 영향을 감지하지만 할 뿐, 더 이상 발전을 못하고 있다.따라서 그들은 가정의 불모성속에 계속 남게 된다. Conrad의 여성에 대한 긍정적인 태도의 발전은 1912. 3年경 부터 더욱 깊어져서 이후 작품들은 사랑이 주제가 되고 있다.즉 사랑이 入生에서 가장 중요한 것이며 사랑을 하며 짝을 찾는 것이 우주의 질서 순리임을 밝히고 있다. 후기 작품중 대표작의 하나인 Victory는 人物에 중점을 두어 단순화된 작품인 바, 이를 들어 약점이라고 지적하는 평자도 있으나, 이 작품은 개인과 사회간의 문제를 개인과 개인간의 관계를 통하여 투시하기 위하여 人物에 중점을 둔 것이라고 할 수 있다. 초기에 주로 다루던 명예나 이상적 자아의 추구대신 사랑이 주제가 되고 있다. 아버지의 회의적인 철학의 영향을 받아 행동의 세계에 참여하기를 거부하여 불완전한 生을지내는 Heyst 에게 완전한 생을 갖게 해 준 것은 Lena 의 사랑의 힘이다. Lena 는 순수한 사랑, 헌신적인 사랑의 상징으로써 나타나고 있다. 처음에는 Lena 도 무지의 존재이며, 가련하고 약한 존재로써 남자의 도움을 받아야 하지만, 그녀에게는 직관이있으며 사랑을 할 수 있는 능력, 믿을 수 있는 능력이 있기에, 사랑을 통해 생명적인 힘과 창조적인 가능성을 갖게 된다. 이제 Lena 는 생명의 근원이며, 세계적 惡을 쳐부시는 강한 존재가 된다. Heyst 보다 육체적, 정신적으로 열등하지만 사랑의 직관적인 힘을 통해 Heyst 를 인도하게 된다. Heyst를 위험에서 구하기 위해 그녀는 자기 희생을 감수하게 되는 바, 그녀는 자신의 사랑이 Heyst를 구했다는 생각에 기쁨과 승리를 느끼며 행복하게 죽는다. Heyst는 Lena 의 희생적 사랑의 의미를 통해, 그 자신도 진실을 알게 되고 사랑을 하고 믿을 수 있는 능력이 가장 중요하다는것을 깨달아 죽음을 택하고 있는 바, Conrad 가 생각하는 가치있는 죽음으로써Heyst 도 승리를 얻고 있다. 사랑이 인간을 완성시키고 진리에 도달하게 한다는 것은 Conrad가 그의 작품을 통하여 발견한 진리이다. 개인과 개인간의 성실성-사랑-에 충실한다는 것은 入間의 근본적인 본질의 완성으로써 이는 곧 사회, 세계에의 성설성으로 연결되기 때문이다.;Conrad considers that society must be based on "fidelity" and "human solidarity" in order to survive. He thinks man can be redeemed by his faith and loyalty to "fidelity." But he, who recognizes a hostility of forces that exists both in the conditions of practical life and in the constitution of man himself - the dark power of the human nature -, shows his vision of redemption and victory through death. In this works, Conrad is concerned not only with loyalty to the community and to one's self but also with loyalty between individuals; it is concordant with the development of women's role in his works. In Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, men's self-recognition is achieved through the faith in "fidelity" to the human community. As "fidelity" is the highest virtue of Conrad's ideal value, its opposite - betrayal - is the control theme of the early period. Conrad's men have a victory when they overcome the bet ayal -which comes from the conflict of their ideal self and dark power of himself at the crisis. The betrayal to the "fidelity" at the crisis is also the public violation of one's good name. It is the principle of honor that binds the private agony of Conrad's men to the outer world of values. So their effort to atone their disgrace and regain their honor is an advance toward "fidelity" to human community. Then Conrad's treatment of women, who have no concept of idealism in their ignorance, is a prevalent threat, a menace, and a destructive power to men's sincerity and truth. He maintained his concern with the individual and with personal relations but extended his range to include as well as private life in Nostromo. He treats the theme of "fidelity" and betrayal, but the attitude to the creation of woman is changed. Most people in Nostromo have been affected not only by silver but also by Emilia Gould. Woman is not a subsidiary and minor theme. And woman's love is not a menace and a destructive power. She, who has a noble mind and tender-hearted sympathy, performs the role of a comforter. She becomes to see the world as it is - the evil power of the material interests. At last she get the answer of what the life is through her experienced reality and love which is the single value transcending the egotism of the materialistic world. But the wall of silverbricks between Emilia Gould and her husband is still remained means that Conrad excludes love as a redeeming power. Conrad's concern of loyalty between individuals derives that his fundamental attitude toward woman and love has changed; love between man and woman is the most important thing in life. So love replaces the old preoccupation with loyalty to the community. In Victory, Conrad suggests man fulfill himself and achieve goodness through love. Lena, who was defenceless girl to be rescued at first, becomes a powerful beroine to save her lover through her self-sacrificing love. In Victory, Lena is the fertility incarnate and the literal source of life. She is the symbol of creative possibility. At the self-sacrificing death of Lena, Heyst acknowledges his failure. He, who at last completely in touch with truth, is saved. Woman's love is the way to the salvation of mankind. Lena's victory are victory over evil and scepticism. And it is the victory for life. The affirmation to love is the Conrad's hardwon vision through his works. His propounding the loyalty to love over life is the way to achieve the human "solidarity."
