볼프강 바인가르트의 타이포그래피에서 보여지는 리듬 표현 연구

Abstract

Appearance of Computer, typical new generation media, has influenced modern information age. Computer also affected on typography that is preliminary element of communication. It allows designer to have various ways to approaching typography opportunities. On the other hand, computer generated limited range of typography graphic to the designer. And it also made lack of 'Gestaltung' to the designers. In order to overcome the lack of 'Gestaltung' in modern typography phenomenon, we need to understand gestaltung factor and principle that are basic components. To understand these basic components, I explained new form of modern typography its possibilities with the unity of variety and rhythm. For the benefit of better understanding, I selected Wolfgang Weingart who is the pioneer of modern digital typography because he made new form of typography on rhythm. He applied the rhythm principle to typography with his endless change life. He developed and implemented new Swiss typography with his experiment and self-teaching. This thesis consists of six chapters, including introduction and conclusion. In chapter Ⅱ and Ⅲ, I explained the characteristic of rhythm and visual expression that related in typography. In chapter Ⅳ and Ⅴ, I introduced and analyzed Wolfgang Weingart's new Swiss typography that applied on rhythm. Wolfgang Weingart has developed his typography on rhythm with three mentalities that are 'Discovery', 'Experience and Experiment', and 'Quest'. Wolfgang Weingart has generated innovative typography with his own rhythm organization and expression methods. 1. Rhythm with different typo size 2. Rhythm with various shape 3. Rhythm with space 4. Rhythm with visual direction change 5. Rhythm with bold and narrow lines 6. Rhythm with various texture I also described and suggested the new way to approaching typography method in this thesis. Therefore, I hope that an endless effort to explore and develop Korean typography will be continued with its new directions and possibilities.;현대 정보화 사회의 대표적인 매체는 컴퓨터이며 그 영향이 커뮤니케이션의 가장 근본적인 요소인 타이포그래피에도 나타났다. 타이포그래피의 새로운 가능성을 보여 주었던 디지털화된 표현 방법은 시간이 지날수록 툴이나 자료에 집착하는 경향을 보이면서 조형성의 문제를 가져왔다. 따라서 디자이너의 조형성 부재로 인한 현대 타이포그래피의 현상을 극복하기 위해서는 조형 요소와 원리의 이해가 기본적으로 필요하며 이것이 전제되어야 한다. 조형성에서 중요시하는 다양(多樣)의 통일이라는 특성과 조형에 미감을 형성하는 '리듬(Rhythm)'이라는 원리를 통해 타이포그래피에 새로운 형식을 보여줌으로서 현대 타이포그래피의 가능성을 찾고 필요한 방향을 제시히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 목적을 위해 본 연구자는 조형 요소와 원리에 충실하며 새로운 변화와 기능성을 보여 주었던 현대 디지털 타이포그래피의 혁신적인 선구자라고 할 수 있는 볼프강 바인가르트를 선정하였다. 또한 그의 조형세계와 타이포그래피에서 보여지는 활자의 해체와 다양한 변화를 리듬을 통해 분석하고 정리하였다. 먼저 리듬의 원리를 정리하였다. 리듬은 요소들이 평면속에서 규칙적, 혹은 불규칙적으로 반복되고 배열됨으로서 살아있는 공간을 이루는 것이다. 이것을 구성하는 조형 요소들은 시간과 공간내에서 상호 유기적인 관계아래 구조와 질서, 그리고 조화를 가지도록 시각적 전체를 결속하는 지각적 유기화가 무엇보다 중요하다. 리듬은 똑같거나 아주 변화된 요소들이 반복 교체와 점이를 통해 시각화되어 그 형태가 나타난다. 이것은 통일성을 전제로 한 동적 변화를 의미하는 것으로 이 변화속에서도 질서와 조화를 이루어야 리듬을 느낄 수 있는 것이다. 시각 표현에 있어 리듬은 평면속에서 감휘진 '잠재적 태(胎)'이다. 이러한 리듬의 원리를 타이포그래피에서 발견하고 적용한 볼프강 바인가르트의 조형세계와 작품을 분석하였다. 그는 리듬이 가지는 이 '잠재적 태'를 에너지화하면서 운동감과 시각적 역동성을 만들어낸 사람이다. 그는 질서 정연한 스위스 스타일의 활자를 해체하였으며 그 내적 원리를 지키면서 평면에 강력한 리듬을 구현해 갔다. 연구과정을 통해 새로운 파라다임으로 이끈 볼프강 바인가르트의 조형 세계와 타이포그래피의 리듬적 특성을 다음과 같이 결론 내릴 수 있었다. 먼저 볼프강 바인가르트의 리듬을 통한 변화와 성장은 다음 3가지의 단어로 규정지을 수 있다. 첫째, 볼프강 바인가르트는 '발견'했다. 둘째, 볼프강 바인가르트는 '경험'했고 '실험'했다. 셋째, 볼프강 바인가르트는 '탐구'했다. 볼프강 바인가르트는 이와같은 혁신적이고 자유로운 타이포그래피를 다음과 같은 다양한 리듬 구성과 표현방법으로 창조해 나갔다. 1. 활자의 크기 변화를 통한 리듬이다. 2. 활자의 형태 변화와 왜곡을 통한 리듬이다. 3. 활자공간의 해체를 통한 리듬이다. 4. 활자의 시각적 방향 변화를 통한 리듬이다. 5. 선의 위치와 굵기 변화를 통한 리듬이다. 6. 다양한 텍스츄어의 발견과 그를 통한 리듬이다. 볼프강 바인가르트는 활자라는 제한된 요소안에서 조형 요소를 활용한 유기적 구성을 통해 다양한 리듬의 세계를 보여 주었다. 그의 이러한 실험적 창의성과 조형성은 현대 타이포그래피의 새로운 흐름을 창조할 수 있는 길을 보여 주는 것이다. 볼프강 바인가르트의 본질을 지키는 정통성과 변혁의 리듬세계를 추구하는 정신을 한국의 디자인에도 적용할 수 있다. 다음의 연구로 우리 특유의 미의식을 형성한 한국 미 본질의 한 부분인 자연 환경에 대해 연구하고 그것을 디자인에 적용하여 표현해 보고자 한다. 또한 의미 내용의 중요성과 함께 형식에 대한 중요성을 함께 인식해서 조형 요소와 원리에 대한 구성과 표현 방법을 실험하여 한국 타이포그래피에서의 리듬과 질서 체계에 대한 연구가 있기를 기대한다.
