Abstract
The subject of the present thesis, "The Foundation and Development of the Modern Korean Sculpture", necessarily comprises dual system of approach; historical and analytical, Historical survey which deals with (a)regional introduction and transmission of sculpture of Egypt to China, (b) a brief description of the historical background of Korean sculpture from its origin to the modern era, and (c) the transformation of the European sculpture from Rodin to the present accordingly forms the former part of the thesis, and the emphasis is put of the search for the characteristics of traditional scupture and their effects on the foundation of the modern Korean sculpture. The latter part of the thesis which deals mainly with the development of modern Korean sculpture also consists of the two periods; the first stage of its development (l910-1966), and the second (1945-1966). The first stage will show chronological analysis of sculptors and their works represent the period of pioneers of modern Korean sculpture with their artistic as well as social background. The second stage will show the formation and development of the contemporary sculpture since 1945 which constant1y falls under the foreign influences. Consequently, it seems well to admit that the modern Korean sculture has been forced to face twofold origins, traditional as well as western, which means that the true meaning of the Korean sculpture must be found in the harmony of the two.
