William Shakespeare, the central writer of Elizabethan period, has been studied by many scholars, pocts and critics. On the other hand John Dryden in Restoration period who sums up and excels the other writers of his time in nearly every respect has an important position in the history of English Literature, but few read his works, especially his plays. It is Dryden that is recognized as an excellent writer but seldom read because he is an elusive and complexwriter. Therefore why I chose Shakespeare and Dryden as the subject of my Thesis is to acknowledge Dryden's genius by comparing him with Shakespeare. Before I compared and analyzed Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare's best Roman Play, ana Dryden's All for Love; or, the World Well Lest ,I made a study of the theatrical backgrounds of the two periods, Elizabethan and Restoration period, and the main features of the two writers. Dryden's All for Love is generally acknowledged as his best Play, and without much question it is the best tragedy of its age. In thc preface to the play Dryden expresses his dissatisfaction with French tragedy and his enthusiasm for Shakespeare, on whose Antony and Cleopatra he modeled this Play. No other of Shakespeare's plays lent itself so readily to the typical Restoration plot or could have submitted to its characteristic schemes and patterns without some fatal distortion. Conflicts of love and honour, decisions that held empire and joy in the balance, great personages, undying loyalties --- all these were present in as tory certified by history and glorified by Shakespeare. Dryden worked out the plot In such a way as to accentuate those features which lent themselves to the prevailing methods of heroic drama. All for Love is not a mere adaptation or imitation, but a creative adaptation which has Dryden's own uniqueness. This is my conclusion. In an attempt to draw my own conclusion I read the plays closely. The method I used for this Thesis was a critical approach, analyzing the themes, the plots, and the languages of the two plays, with a stress on the analysis of the characterizations.-
