Abstract
This paper is concerned. with analyzing and interpreting some underlying meanings of the novel The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil, confining it to the volume I and II that appeared in print before the writer's death. Measuring the situation just before the First World War as a common denominator of all problems involving the past and future, Musil tries to take into account the qualities of the world in which no humanity exists with no man who tries to live his life. The development of the story is rather loose and. the time reference is quite irregular. To Musil, however, no form exists without content. The subordination of the novel to the ideas outgrows ordinary novels. For Musil, at least in this work, a passion for ideas outweighs a passion for art. It seems that Musil's description of thought and events followed not by the indicative mood but by the subjunctive mood is effectual in determining the meaning of 'possibility'. With the unrealization of reality, all values since the dawn of history are denied and new possibilities including even variability of the new value are pursued. Ulrich, the hero, wandering between reality and unreality, represents a man who has a sense of possibility. This sense of possibility is defined as an ability of thinking of all possible matters or an ability of thinking no more about what it is than about what it is not. It is, therefore, the sense for something ideal that should have eliminated. all contradictions of reality, and. that should have included God's intention which He is yet being unaware of. The hero who intends to become a very important person suddenly begins to be aware of insignifIcanoe of the materialistic world. He then decides to leave reality. He becomes the man without qualities' who denies to commit his mind to the reality of the world where men with qualities commit their minds to this reality. He is a man without qualities in that 'qualities' is the human ability to adjust to reality. Thinking only of the problems in right life, he involves himself in a "Collateral Campaign" in which he experiments with his intention to improve mankind. This is called a Utopia of his spiritual world. The Utopia seems to be almost the same as 'possibility'. Possibility eventually becomes a Utopia, when possibility is free from the restraint of the reality and develops itself. The Utopia is then an experiment to see how all possibilities emerge and operate in life. Reality always co-exists with a silly desire for unreality. He is consciously longing for Utopia, but on the other hand, he subconsciously delays realizing its possibility. This irony of unrealization signifies the incompleteness of the huge novel with Ulrich's uncertainty of thoughts as well as Musil's ambiguity of literary style. As the shepherd. who preaches the gospel to unrepented criminals, Ulrioh's metaphisical discussions constantly continues but ends in failures. However, no other eloquences and successes are better than his failures, thoughts, and silence. It is because he pursues the joy of infinite possibility along with the concept that he always lives his life hypothetically. As Musil intended in this novel to contribute the spiritual achievements to the world, the novel is more successful in pursuing the limitations of possibility for the direction toward a new morality than in its form and. structure.
