- Abstract
- The most essential element in dance is body movement. Dance as a comprehensive art form, however, is perfected only with mutually complementing elements - choreography, directing, acting, setting, lighting and music, etc.
Unlike other effects, lighting in dance creates not only physical effects chasing body movements on stage every movements but also influences even psychological expression of works. I have thus treated the lighting as follows:
Chapter Ⅰ General theory of stage. lighting - definition, history and elements of stage lighting; lighting: equipments and facilities; their variety and capacity.
Chapter Ⅱ Different feelings created by various colors; variety of color media; dimmer and light sources; and color transformation in lighting.
Chapter Ⅲ Various feelings obtained from human forms (by studying physiological foundation, direction of body, position, general forms, and shape of movements) and feelings created by floor patterns.
Chapter Ⅳ Various feelings obtained in divided lighting areas, stage floor, and in open space above the stage.
Chapter Ⅴ Analyzed various lighting effects and uses of lighting equipments, their positions and purposes, capacity, and colors in a concrete situation using the work "Forest" as an example. Based on studies made above, I have drawn the following conclusions:
1. Light designing is not a technique. but is an art which. should be further developed as an art.
2. Light designing for dance is basically different from that of drama and should maintain the difference.
3. Recognition of the independence of dance lighting and its study in Korea is urged.
