- Abstract
- The Bernthsen Reaction was one of the earlist used for the synthesis of acridines and consists in heating a mixture of an aromatic or aliphatic carboxylic acid with a diphenylamine and zinc chloride ( 1.5~3.0 mole ) in the absence of solvents to 200°~270℃.
Subsequently 9-substituted acridines; acridine, 9-methyl acridine, 9-ethyl acridine, 9-phenyl acridine, and 9-(p-chloro phenyl) acridine had been prepared by the method from a variety of carboxylic acids and diphenylamines. The yields were variable; formic acid gived particularly poor results.
The temperature, the time of reaction, and the quantity of zinc chloride present were of importance in obtaining the optimum yields, and vary with each case.
