Abstract
Haydn was not a devout mystic like Bach, or a heaven-storming Titan like Beethoven. Least of all was he a mere forerunner of Beethoven or of Romanticism. In music history, his role was two-fold, that of a pioneer of new musical forms, and that of one who advanced and brought to completion the achievements of others in a unique and masterful way. In his oratorio "Die Sch?pfung", Haydn effectively combined solo voices in ensemble and with the chorus, and used the orchestra not only as the accompanying agent but as a mighty instrument by which the changing moods of the great story of Creation which he sought to portray could be most artistically presented. A large part of the charm of this work consists in its naive and loving depiction of nature and of man's innocent joy in the simple, natural life. This was discovered by the writer through a detailed analysis of the harmonic and melodic components of the 32 movements of the oratorio. Although the important Baroque form of Recitative was employed here by Haydn with less success than might have been expected, yet through the orchestration techniques and the mighty choruses, and the interplay of solos, ensembles and choruses, the perfected classical style of the eighteenth century is apparent. In this work, Haydn's art is seen as being characterized by the union of sophistication with honest craftsmanship, and a never-failing spiritual contact with God and Nature.
