Abstract

Gustave Flaubert, in accordance with the tendency that he used to write alternatively the works of descriptive pictures which comprise the unique rythms and another works of critical observation, began to write the masterpiece "The Sentimental Education" which was one of the modern novels where he reflected all his living experiences, immediately after he had done "Salammbo^". And he completed it through as long suffering as in "Madame Bovary". In this work, Flaubert draws himself in disguise of Fre'de'ric Moreau and under the name of Madame Arnoux recalls the image of Madame Schlesinger whom he met at Trouville Coast in 1836 when he was A young boy and who was his only true passion throughout all his life and who was his valuable affection. Telling us the beautiful dreams falling down gradually in touch with the disgraceful reality, the abandonment of sensitivity and imagination before lives, and theselike lives of failure, Flaubert revives Paris of the July Monarchy where lived many young people discouraged because they suffered from the revolution, "being pretty intellectual and strong for keeping ideals but not being so for realizing them." The generation that Flaubert described in his poor heros and heroines is one who brought the victory and decay of romanticism. This study is divided into three parts reviewing the following subjects: Firstly in Part I "Introduction of living experiences", the models of Fre'de'ric, Deslauriers, Madame Arnoux, who are the main characters shall be introduced. Secondly in Part II "The portrait of Madame Arnoux", Flaubert's love toward Madame Schle'singer and Fre'de'ric's love toward Madame Arnoux shall be reviewed. Thirdly in Part III "The development of liquid rythm", rythms of water and rythms of dream which are characteristic in "The sentimental education" shall be studied. And in conclusion the appraisals up-to-date on this work shall be checked. "The sentimental education" is one of social novels containing historical foundation and vivid realities together with fictions. G. Sorel emphasizes this work's value as historical records by saying "the historians who eagerly want to know the era before Coup de'tat could not neglect "The sentimental education". Most of problems agitated in around 1848 are represented in this work. Accordingly the recall of Revolution in 1848 is estimated as real and historical picture.;Gautave Flaubert는 그의 작품 전체에 특유의 리듬을 부여하고 있는 서사적 회화의 작품과 비평적 관찰의 작품을 교체적으로 쓴다는 경향에 따라서 〈Salammbe^〉를 마치자 곧, 자기생활의 경험을 전부 투입시킨 현대소설, 〈l'E'’ducation Sentimentale〉의 大作에 착수했다. 그리하여 이 작품도 〈Madame Bovary〉와 마찬가지로 장기간에 걸친 집필의 고통을 겪은 뒤에 완성했다. Flaubert는 이 작품에서 Fre'de'ric Moreau의 모습속에 자기자신을 그리고 있다. 그리고 Madame Arnoux라는 이름으로 그가 아직 어린 소년이었던 1836년 Trouville 해안에서 만났고, 그의 생애 전체를 통하여 유일하고 진실한 정열이었고, 고귀한 애정이었던 Schl'esinger 부인의 영상을 환기시키고 있다. 또한, 모욕적인 현실과의 접촉으로 점점 무너지는 아름다운 꿈, 생활앞에서의 감수성과 상상력의 포기, 이러한 실패의 삶을 우리에게 이야기하면서 Flaubert는, 혁명의 열기에 시달리고, ‘이상을 품기에는 꽤 지적이고 강하나 그것을 실현시키기에는 별로 그렇지 못하기 때문에 이미 낙담한 젊은이가 많이 살고 있는 7월왕권의 Paris를 재생시키고 있다. Flaubert가 그의 서글픈 주인공들 속에서 구현하는 세대는 곧 낭만주의의 승리와 쇠퇴를 가져오는 세대이다. 이 논문을 3부분으로 나누어 다음과 같은 문제들을 고찰하였다. 1부 生活體驗의 導入에서는 주요 등장인물, Fr?d?ric, Deslauriers, Arnoux 부인의 모델을 밝혔고, 2부 아르누부인의 肖像에서는 Flaubert의 Schl?singer, 부인에 대한 사랑과 Fre'de'ric의 Arnoux 부인에 대한 사랑을 살펴보았으며, 3부 流動的 리듬의 展開에서는 〈l'e'ducation Sentimentale〉에 특유의 리듬을, 부여하고 있는, 물의 리듬과 꿈의 리듬을 고찰하였다. 그리고 결론에서는 이 작품에 대한 종래의 평가에 대하여 검토하였다. 〈l'e’ducation Sentimentale〉은 소설적인 허구와 함께 역사적 토대와 생생한 현실성이 있는 사회소설이다. G. Sorel은 「쿠데타 이전의 시기를 알기를 갈망하는 역사가는 〈l'e'ducation Sentimentale〉을 소홀히 할 수 없다」라고 이 작품의 역사적 기록의 가치를 강조하고 있다. 이 작품 속에 1848년 경에 일어났 던 대부분의 문제들이 묘사되어 있다. 따라서 1848년의 혁명의 환기는 진실한 역사적회화라는 평가를 받고 있다.
