외국어로서의 한국어 관용어 교육

Abstract

외국어 실력이라고 하면 일반적으로 발음, 문법, 어휘에 대한 지식을 의미하지만 한국어의 일상 대화나 드라마, 영화 따위를 이해하고 잡지나 소설, 수필 등을 읽기 위해서는 위의 3가지 지식만으로는 부족하다. 그 대사나 내용 중에는 일반 사전에서는 찾아볼 수조차 없거나 비록 사전에 있는 표현이라 하더라도 어떤 뜻으로 해석을 하면 좋을지 모르는 경우가 많다. 이런 표현의 대부분을 관용어가 차지하고 있다. 관용어에 대한 관심은 대개 외국어 습득의 수준을 높여가는 과정에서 발생한다. 모국어만을 사용하는 경우에 관용어는 그 언중 사이에서 무의식적으로 습득되고 아무런 의심도 없이 사용되기 때문이다. 그러나 그 언어를 외국어로서 습득하는 자에게 관용어란 쉽게 이해하거나 접근할 수 없는 어려운 요소임을 흔히 발견할 수 있으며 언어 습득에 상당한 장애요인이 된다. 또한 단어의 암기나 문법보다도 오히려 광범위하게 쓰이는 관용 어 때문에 곤란을 겪는 일도 많다. 따라서 본 논문은 외국어로서의 한국어 학습자들이 실제 생활의 의사 소통에 있어 올바른 관용어의 이해와 표현능력 향상에 도움을 주고, 서로 다른 문화적 배경에서 비롯된 관용어를 학습함에 있어 난점들을 극복하고 외국인의 한국어 교육에 효과적인 방법을 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 한국어 관용어는 한국 고유의 풍습과 사회·문화적 요소가 잘 반영되어 있고 한국인의 의식구조를 드러내고 있으므로 논의의 전개를 위해 먼저 관용어와 그 의미의 배경이 되는 문화적 토대와의 관계에 대하여 기술하였다. 다음으로는 현재 어학원을 운영하고 있는 국내 4개 대학의 교재를 중심으로 관용어 교육의 현황을 검토하였다. 이러한 교재 검토를 통하여 각 교재에 나타난 관용어의 종류, 빈도, 제시방법 등을 분석하였다. 전체적으로 한국의 독특한 문화를 반영하는 관용어와 신체와 관련된 관용어, 의미적으로 볼 때 쉽게 연상되고 이해가 용이한 반투명형에 해당하는 관용어가 많이 제시되었다. 이를 바탕으로 효과적인 관용어 교육을 위한 방안으로서 교재에서는 관용어의 내포된 의미를 이해하고 적절한 상황에서 이를 표현할 수 있는 능력 향상에 중점을 두되 제시, 설명, 반복, 응용 및 전이의 단계순으로 구성되는 것이 바람직함을 제안해 보았다. 구체적인 교육 방법으로는 문화적 배경 설명을 통한 교육, 상황이나 문맥을 통한 교육, 의미의 결합적 관계를 통한 교육을 제시하였다. 이는 외국인 학습자들이 인지하기 어려운 미묘한 의미의 한국어 관용어를 쉽게 이해하고 표현하는 데 도움이 되리라 본다.;In general foreign language capability includes knowledge of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. However, only this kind of knowledge is not sufficient to understand completely Korean daily conversation, dramas, or movies, and to read Korean novels, essays with its detailed meaning. Some expressions or phrases cannot be comprehensible even if one looks up a dictionary or translate literally. In many cases idioms can explain these difficulties. The interest about idioms starts to come up when one reaches a certain level of understanding of foreign language. In case of mother tongue idiomatic expressions are acquired naturally through daily life and used without any doubt. But for the foreign language learners, idioms are difficult factors in developing a lingustic comprehension and reaching a higher level of access. Sometimes this becomes even barriers which blocks acquisition of the target language. Learners have difficulty in understanding idioms rather than vocabulary or grammar. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to help learners to understand and use idiomatic expressions in their daily conversation and to overcome their difficulties in learning Korean Idioms due to the cultural differences. As a first step, I described the necessities of learning cultural background of the general Korean idioms, which show Korean custom and social, cultural characteristics/attitude and thinking mechanisms of Korean people in daily life. And then to figure out the current status of teaching Korean idioms by professional institutes, I examined some of the textbooks of four universities which operates their language institute for the foreigners. Through this study, I could analyze a frequency of each idiom through textbooks, types of idioms, and how they take use of them, etc. As a whole, these textbooks include relatively large numbers of idioms, most of which are related to original Korean culture, and human body and some of them are the type of semi-transparent idioms which are clearly understood to the learners by itself. Through this study I suggest, as an effective teaching method for idioms, that the desirable textbook design should include four steps : representation, explanation, repetition, and application/transfer. textbooks should also focus on the improvement of ability to understand the implied meaning of idioms and suitable situations to express them. The specific teaching methods are as follows : the explanation of cultural background, the understanding through relavant context and situation, and the meaningful coherence through associated idioms. These teachings will help the foreign learners understand and express Koran idioms easily, which seems to be very subtle in its meaning and hard to be recognized properly.
