HISTORICAL MEMORY

Abstract

이 연구는 인간 개개인이 가진 가치가 보다 큰 역사적 관계를 변화 시킬 수 있는지를 보여주기 위해 의도되었다. 모든 나라에서 학자나 혹은 지도자는 자신들이 가진 이미지를 투영하는 역사적 기억을 정당화하고 가치를 부여하며 발전시켜왔다. 과거의 용서라는 새로운 이데올로기를 발견함으로써 다른 나라에 대한 분노는 없어질 것이며 상대 국가의 태도 또한 바꿀 수 있을 것이다. 이는 조화롭고 평화로운 새로운 관계가 성립되기 위한 새로운 발판이 될 것이다. 역사의 기억(historical memory)은 국가의 정신을 형성하는 사건의 기록으로 쌍방관계(bilateral relations)에 영향을 미친다. 이는 또한 국가정책을 수립하는 사람들에게도 영향을 끼친다. 이 연구는 한 국가가 선택한 역사의 기억이 다른 나라를 대하는 태도에 어떻게 영향을 미치며 그리고 이러한 기억이 두 나라 사이에서의 진정한 평화를 이루는데 방해가 됨을 증명하고자 한다. 일본이 2차세계대전 당시에 행한 행위에 대해 중국과 한국에 사과를 한 사례 분석을 통해서 몇몇 중요한 역사적 사건들을 반추하였다. 일본이 중국과 한국에 사과한 역사적 사건들은 제각각 차이점이 있으며 이 차이점을 분석하여 역사의 기억을 잊는 과정이 두 나라간의 관계를 변화 시키는데 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 알아볼 것이다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 쌍방관계(bilateral relations)를 발전시키기 위해서는 역사의 올바른 기억과 용서의 과정이 필수적이며 두 국가는 반드시 용서와 화해의 과정에 적극적으로 참여해야만 한다는 것으로 결론을 내린다.;In this thesis, the value of the small scale of an individual human being in transforming and changing a big scale relationship is shown. Within each nation, scholars and leaders have promoted, valued and justified historical memory in a way that reflected their self-image. By finding a new ideology of forgetting and forgiving, the heart of bitterness within a nation toward another will be removed, and will change the attitude of the other nation also. This is the foundation on which a new harmonious and peaceful relationship will be built. Historical memory, which is a record of an event stuck in the national psyche, impacts bilateral relations in that it influences the people who make national policy. This study attempts to prove that the historical memories a nation chooses to keep affects how this nation acts toward another, and this, in turn, could prevent the creation of true peace between two nations. Through case analysis that compares the apologies for Japan and China and Japan and Korea for acts committed during World War Ⅱ, some important historical events are retraced. The differences in events leading to the apologies are analyzed in order to see whether the process of forgetting historical memories had the effect of changing the relations between two nations. The study concludes that indeed the process of remembering and forgetting is important in improving bilateral relations, but both the nations involved must be open to the process of forgetting and forgiving.
