상상의 세계와 만나는 공간체험

Abstract

도시화가 진행된 현대사회는 모든 것들이 빠르게 변화하고 있으며, 교통수단의 발달과 더불어 속도의 가치는 중요해졌다. 그것은 사람들에게 불안감과 혼란을 가져다주고, 이를 해소하기 위해 도시인들은 휴식의 공간을 꿈꾼다. 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard, 1884~1962)는 흙(대지)에 속하는 공간은 노동을 통한 수확의 기쁨과 휴식을 통한 재충전의 기능을 가진다고 한다. 공간은 세계 속 우리의 구석 곧 하나의 소우주이며, 전체를 보호하는 역사와 질서를 가지고 있다. 따라서 공간은 무한한 차원을 지니고 반복되는 생성과 소멸을 통해 항상 거듭나게 된다. 본 논문에서는 공간의 휴식의 기능, 곧 내밀함의 특징에 초점을 맞추고 공간 체험에서 나타나는 현상을 기술하며, 이를 작업으로 이끌 때에 주로 사용하는 매체인 사진 및 영상에 대해 서술하였다. 바슐라르에 의하면 구석, 변두리, 공터, 빈 집, 등의 장소 속에서 내밀성을 발견할 수 있다. 본인의 작업에 표현된 이러한 공간은 주로 도시 변두리에서 성장한 본인의 환경과 무관하지 않으며, 일상 공간에서 은밀한 휴식을 취했던 어린 시절을 반영한다. 내밀한 공간은 평소에는 지나치다가 어느 순간 지치고 떠도는 모든 존재들에게 다가와 안온함과 평화로움을 선사한다. 모든 존재들은 존재의 공간을 확보하여, 그 속에서 휴식을 누리면서 세상 너머의 세계를 꿈꾸게 된다. 공간의 내밀함은 몽상(夢想)을 통해 무한한 외부 세계로 이끄는 공간체험을 가능하게 한다. 공간 속 모든 것들은 상징의 형태로 다가온다. 상징들은 일종의 환각 및 착란 현상을 통해 본인의 경험 및 관심 분야 등이 반영되어 나타나며, 이들이 모여 하나의 공간체험을 형성한다. 공간체험이 거듭될수록, 인간은 마치 요나가 고래 뱃속에 나오듯 점차 자신과 마주하면서 새로운 자아를 찾게 되며, 공간 또한 이름 있는 존재(장소)로 다시 태어나게 된다. 본인은 공간 체험을 기록하는데 있어서 사진 및 영상을 이용하는데, 눈의 구조와 시각 기억처리 과정과 유사한 사진의 특징은 경험한 모든 것을 솔직하게 기록한다. 모든 것이 빠르게 변하는 현대사회는 이미 초현실이 되어버렸다. 사진은 이러한 모습을 담아내는데 있어서 적합한 매체가 되었다. 오늘날 포토샵과 디지털 이미지로 인해 사진의 순수성이 위협받고 있음에 불구하고 으젠느 앗제(Eugene Atget, 1857~1927) 를 포함한 20세기 초 사진가들의 작품은 여전히 특별해 보인다. 이러한 이유를 밝히기 위해 본인은 그들이 주로 사용한 ‘만보자(漫步者, 또는 산보자(散步者), Flâneure)’의 시선에 주목하였다. 만보자는 자신의 주변세계인 도시와 군중들과 거리를 둔 채 여유와 한가로움을 가지고 세상을 관조한다. 그들은 사진을 통해 푼크툼(punctum)의 두 가지 특징: 세부와 노에마(존재론적 특징)을 이용하여 도시의 숨겨진 모습을 포착하였고, 언젠가 사라질지 모르는 존재에 대한 성찰을 이끌어내었다. 2006~2008년에 걸쳐서 진행된 세 개의 프로젝트:<아현동 탐험기:유키의 모험>, <정동 방문기>, <이태원 프로젝트>를 통하여 본인은 그 공간속에 남겨진 사람들의 흔적 속에서 자신과 주변세계의 모습을 바라볼 수 있었다. 리크릿 트리바니쟈(Rikrit Trivanija)가 수행한 프로젝트(뉴욕에서 음식을 대접하거나 혹은 자신의 작업실을 제공하는 등)와 양혜규의 "사동30번지"의 실험적인 작업의 예시처럼, 본인 역시 기록하는 데 만족하지 않고, 또 다른 가능성을 모색할 것이다. 마지막으로 본인은 작품을 통해 만보자의 시선으로 소외된 도시의 풍경을 기록하여 휴식과 여유를 공유하고자 한다. 그리고 보잘것없는 공간이라도 존재 그 자체를 찾을 수 있다는 점에서 본 연구의 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. ;With the progress of urbanization, all of things in contemporary society are changing quickly. Development of transportation makes the value of speed have become important. Because of this urban people usually feel uneasy and confused, so they dream of a resting place. In addition to, Gaston Bachelard: 1884~1962 commented that place belongs to earth in Alchemy. Place offers the pleasure of harvest and the refreshment. Moreover, the place is our corner in the world as micro-cosmos, which has its own history and system protecting all over. Therefore, place which has endless dimension always reborn with repeating formation and destruction. In this thesis, I focus the refreshment, which is one of function on the earth, and the phenomenon when someone experiences in the place. Then I describe photography and video which mainly use making my art work. First, over "The Poetic of Space" by Bachelard, corner, outskirts, lot, empty houses, etc. I could figure out confidentialness in these places, which are always expressed on my artwork. These places reflect that I have grown up in outskirts and used to take a rest confidentially. Confidential place is often passed by, but it attracts all exhausted beings at the moment, and then provides comfort and calmness. All beings in the place secure a space of present, and they dream of alternative world with relaxing. Confidential place leads experience with dreaming of the outside world with infinity. All the things in place show themselves as symbols. Symbols reflect someone's experience and interest with illusion or distraction. Experience at places are made up with these symbols. With experience the human being find his/herself as if Jonah escape from whale's stomach, the place also becomes a site with name. Second, I mainly use photograph and video recording the experience. Photography is very similar with the structure of eyes and the process of visual memory, so it can record candidly. In addition to, contemporary society already has become surrealism, because it is changing quickly. Therefore, photography is suitable media to express urban spaces. Though the position of documentary photography is no longer special because of digital photoshop images, including Eugene Atget(1857~1927) early 20th photographers' pictures are still significant. I notice the Flâneure's sight to explain the reason, which these photographers mainly used. The Flâneure contemplate urban space and people keeping their distance with composure. As photographer, they captured hidden part in the city applying two factors of punctum: specific and existence, and make people aware of being which is going to disappear someday. Three projects "A-hyeon-dong Journey", "Visiting Jeong-dong" and "Itaewon Project" which I made from 2006 to 2008, I could look at myself and the outside world from trace by people in the place. Like as Rikrit Trivanija(1961~) who served foods or his studio in New York City, and Hyegye Jang's one of her experimental work "Sa-dong 30th", I am finding another possibility not only documenting. In conclusion, I would like to share relaxation and composure capturing hidden parts in the city with the Flaneure's sight. Therefore this thesis would be significant even if the place looks worthless, it can be found the meaning of existence.
