반복 행위의 흔적으로 나타나는 공간감

Abstract

반복적인 행위의 연속으로 인한 흔적들은 시간의 기록과도 같은 것이다. 그 기록은 반복되고 연속적인 행위의 궤적으로 시간성을 드러낸다. 반투명한 상태는 투명함과 불투명함의 중간적 상태로 경계에 있어 모호한 성격을 가진다. 은은하고 빛이 나는 느낌을 주는 반투명한 소재는 그것 너머의 어떤 것을 상상하게 하게 하며, 이것은 신비하고 몽환적인 느낌을 가져다준다. 이와 같이 섬세하고 부드러운 느낌에 대한 관심이 나의 작업의 근간을 이룬다. 나는 반투명한 성질을 가진 여러 가지 소재 중에서 많은 가변성을 지니고 있는 반투명한 종이를 사용하여, 계속해서 찢고 붙여나가는 손놀림에 의해 드러나는 흔적들을 작품으로 표현한다. 작업의 재료로 사용되는 반투명한 종이가 갖는 신비한 소재적 특성은 내가 그것에 호기심을 느끼고 몰입하게 되는 계기가 되었다. 또한 하나의 종이 조각과 또 다른 종이 조각의 중첩으로 인해 나타나는 섬세한 움직임, 그 움직임이 연결되어 공간이 확장이 되어가는 것이 작업에 열중하게 된 동기가 되었다. 면의 중첩은 빛과 단위형의 크기의 적절한 변화로 공간에 운동성, 연속성을 부여할 수 있다. 이것은 단조롭고 지루하기 쉬운 공간을 다양한 운동감으로 나타낼 뿐 아니라 사전에 계획되지 않은 우연의 효과를 보이기도 한다. 또한 한 단위가 다른 것과 겹쳐졌을 때, 그 우선된 것과 나중된 것의 형태가 뚜렷하게 보이거나, 불분명하게 보이는 것의 차이에 따라 투명성의 효과가 다르게 나타나게 된다. 작업은 모든 행위를 우연성에 내맡긴 채 종이를 찢는 것으로 시작된다. 이렇게 찢어진 종이 조각들을 다시 이어 붙이면서 계속 연결해 나간다. 이때의 행위는 무엇인가를 만들어 내기 위함이 아니다. 그것은 어떤 특정한 형상을 갖지 않기 때문에 무목적적이며 의도하지 않은 상태에서 진행된다. 행위에는 의식의 통제력이 개입되며 이것은 우연적 효과와 조화를 이루면서 작품에 나타난다. 이것은 무한히 확장하는 듯 한 느낌을 갖게 한다. 이렇게 진행된 그 행위의 순간들이 흔적으로 남아 가시적으로 보여 지게 된다. 행위의 결과물에서 보여지는 종이 조각과 다른 종이 조각의 중첩은 시작과 끝을 구분할 수 없기 때문에 연속적인 시간 개념에서 벗어나 순간순간을 담아낼 수 있게 된다. 미묘한 변이들로 이루어진 작품은 물리적 세계의 차원을 넘어서 비물질화 된 빛으로 인한 은은한 광선의 효과를 감지하게 한다. 이것은 명상적 공간을 체험하게 한다. 이처럼 매순간 집중하여 같은 행위를 하다보면 종이 조각을 연결하는 그 순간을 통해 계속되는 현재, 즉 영원을 느끼게 된다. 이와 같은 특징들로 인해 나의 작업은 그 시간동안 행해지는 일련의 동작으로 이루어져 행위·시간·공간은 ‘동시성’을 가지게 된다.;The traces made by successively repetitive actions are like the record of time. The record is the mark of repeated and continuous motions and reveals time. Semitransparent material which impresses dim and shiny makes us imagine something beyond as well as it brings about mysterious and dreamy feelings. My work is based on the interest about sensitive and smooth feeling. I express the traces made by the gestures of continuously tearing and pasting changeable semitransparent paper among various materials through my works. The materialistic characteristic of semitransparent paper like this motivated me to become curious about it and to get myself absorbed in it. In addition, the delicate motions created from the piece of paper piled up another piece of paper and the extended space by the linked motions of them also encouraged me to concentrate on this work. The piling up of sides can give a dynamic characteristic and continuance to a space through proper changes of light and the size in a unit. This not only expresses the space which can easily become monotonous and boring with various feelings of motion, but also creates the effect of coincidence which is not planned beforehand. Also, when a unit is overlapped with another, the difference of whether the shapes of what comes first and what comes later are clearly visible or not results in the effect of transparency. The work begins by leaving all actions to contingency and tearing paper. The torn paper like this is connected again. This act is not to create something. It goes on with no purpose or intention, because it has no particular shape. The control of consciousness intervenes between the actions, which harmonize with the accidental effect and are expressed in the work. It creates the feeling of unlimited extension. The moments of the action progressed like this remain as traces and become visible. The beginning and the end of the overlapped piece of paper with another piece seen from the result of the action cannot be divided from each other, so they escape from the concept of successive time and keep each moment. The work consisting of subtle variables transcends the physical world and creates the effect of dim rays by unphysical light. It makes it possible to experience the meditative space. Likewise, when one does the same action while concentrating on every moment, one can feel continuous present, that is, eternity, through the moments of connecting pieces of paper. Because of these characteristics, my work is made up of a series of actions performed during the time, and the action, time and space come to have ‘simultaneity.’
