- Abstract
Childhood, which is originally a transitional stage that a human being
grow and develop, has a meaning more than a simple period between
birth and becoming a grown-up person. It means the whole quality of
life during that stage, which is a condition of life as well as a state of
life. It does not seem that the whole people in the world have spent
ideal childhood, perfectly fulfilling necessary conditions that had
happened during the period. Whether it was small or big, each factor
that occurred to everyone irresistibly, forms the childhood emotion that
were not protected in each person’s memory; it becomes a sentiment
of childhood that are brought up in a grown-up’s unconsciousness,
which also becomes a root that touches the emotion of people.
The root that arouses an agitation of emotion is various as there are
uncountable numbers of people in the world. Known in each person’s
characteristic and appearance those are not alike with any other
people, a universal and general image that is composed of each
person’s various personal history cannot merge the whole emotion of a
specific period of transition such as childhood.
Thus we need to think about non-mainstreamers’ childhood image
including an unfamiliar and special message which make us feel
uncomfortable with our desirable stereotype, rather than a positive
universal image that is reflected with childhood.
My work does not simply reproduce but expresses emphasizing
images only with the feeling of loss which removed specific actuality
and reality, by choosing visual resources of children who have the
feeling of loss physically and emotionally which stirs individual
emotion. What is important is an appealing artistic expression that
makes the most of India ink and the characteristics of materials, and
visual resources which was used as the tool that pull out the artist’s
emotion.
A persuasive power enough to arouse individual’s sympathy is
delivered through a vague image of childhood that is not prescribed in
the concrete, a plausible expression of the feeling of loss, and the
sensuous and improvised description of visual inspiration that occurred
at the outer of an object. The unclear spreading of pale Indian ink
which utilizing the own characteristic of material, is not an obvious
intuitive proposal; therefore, it gives direct self-reflective impression
and leads to form chemistry in terms of saying our own story at
second hand. Moreover, the sensuous expression at the moment which
is not limited in materials, but utilizing its own characteristics
harmonizes with India ink and incites one’s feeling. It is the artist’s
own sensuous expression reacting to the stimulus from the outer of
the object, which makes the audience easily immerse into the work
and empathy by evoking visual impression.
Also, we need to point out the use of visual resources which made
it possible to reappear the feeling of loss in childhood as a concrete
shape. For a contemporary artist living with mass media, visual
resources from mass-media are indispensable for creative art work.
Those resources such as photos or shapes that were recorded with
video media may directly stimulate visually so that it becomes the
beginning of creating art work or can be used as a subject matter
right away. One of the characteristics of these is to have effects
extending the sphere of emotion which may be limited in one’s own
experience by clearly showing things that even the artist has not
experienced; thus, it may enable the sphere of materials not limited
which can be restricted. It can be regarded as performing an important
role in the artist’s creative work.
Therefore, to define my work I will focus on these two
characteristics: sensuous expressions utilizing India ink to carry
childhood with the feeling of loss which enabled the audience to
sympathize with the childhood that is not universal, and reappearance
of the visual resources which body forth in the concrete the feeling
of loss in childhood.
In terms of expression, my work will be compared to Marlene
Dumas and Luc Tuymans’s works which have similar expression and
try to find out characteristics. Also, another effort will be made by
looking at Zhang Xiaogang, Luc Tuymans, and Jenny Saville’s works
which reappeared the portraits of those having a feeling of loss, and
the use utilizing visual resources as an artistic tool and the meaning
will be conceptualized. Especially, those artists such as Loretta Lux,
James Rielly, and Mika Kato who succeeded in reappearing the
childhood with the feeling of loss will be researched to find out what
they have in common, and what is different in their way of expression
telling imilar stories. For the most part, as a contemporary artist, I will
try to endow meanings by looking at the artists’ works who are
contemporarily working. By studying my work’s characteristics, first I
will build foundations of my work and then try to extend the meaning
by looking at contemporary artists’ works who have worked with
similar point of artistic view having common process of creating work.
