Abstract

Living in the modern age, we inevitably find ourselves insituations where we have to meet other people. We constantly establish relationships with a variety of people in new locations. We are influenced by people we interact with and we are easily affected by our environment. At times, we are forced to accept another person’s perception, and out attitudes are also modified to follow the acceptable norms of a certain place. Thus, our thoughts and behaviors are bounded and cannot be completely free. Due to social restrictions, it is difficult to have an honest perception of oneself and freely express one’s will. Hence, many artists face steep challenges while conveying one’s inner thoughts and exploring one’s true self. Recognizing these challenges, this paper attempts to research the process of finding one’s true ego and the form of expressing the result of it. The relationship created between the people we meet in our everyday lives is significantwhen we search for our ego. People in similarenvironments share common thoughts, thus the continuous relationship with other people becomes a good source to look into oneself. Therefore, the effort to find one’s ego can be extended to discovering and analyzing "me" while meeting other people. By establishing relationships, you become aware of how you treat other people, how you interact in unfamiliar environments, and how you express your true self. I attempt to express these processes through my work. An artwork is the projection of the artist’s inner-self. In other words, the work reflects the unconscious psychological state of the artist. The artwork discussed in this paper shows the self-recognition of one’s self, the relationship between people, and the inner-self that one prefers to keep hidden; hence, the relative importance of one’s individual psychological state is big. The first section of the paper discusses the basic foundation when creating an artwork, i.e., the psychological human relationship. This will be explained by the psychological effects uncovered while establishing relationships with strangers coming out from an individual experience. Additionally, I will research how surrealists unconsciously articulate their inner-self and build defensive mechanisms for self-protection. The second section of the paper will discuss the formalities of development, which is a critical aspect to the artwork. Many artists worry over how to effectively convey the message of an artwork, and the contemplation often becomes the motivation of a piece. Figuring out the right materials, the right location for display, and the right method of expression for the artwork is a difficult task, yet an intriguing aspect of the work. Thus, the second section will portray the formalities of development in presenting the "inner-self"of an artwork. I will explain the development of my work according to various formalities, such as the process of collecting objects from surrounding environments, applying texts, and the search of diverse materials. Moreover, I will offer a comparative analysis with my work to other works that use similar forms or mediums. The last section of the paper divides an artwork into "protecting" and "connecting," and shows what one is trying to protect and the ultimate purpose of the artistic action derived from who one is trying to connect with. I attempt to reveal the hidden features of a person, not the bare presentations that can be easily observed in relationships. Although a person isolates oneself by hiding behind a film, the interior can be faintly seen. These personal characteristic is directly reflected in the artwork. While the surface of the objects and drawing in the piece is protected by a translucent film, it seems to ask the viewers to look into the film. The features of one’s true self and the individual characteristics portrayed in the artwork display similarities. As seen, I not only discover myself in ordinary life but also during the process of my work. Thus, the unearthing of one’s self can be conducted by not only introspection but also through the distress coming from work. Furthermore, this process allows for one to gain deeper insight into finding one’s true self. Hence, in the last section, I analyze my work that displays the process of finding one’s self in a consecutive order, and I offer a comprehensive overview of the "self" I attempt to portray in my works. The process of expressing and conveying one’s thoughts is a procedure of searching and recognizing one’s ego. The search for one’s true self can be accomplished by not only introspection but also identification of a work’s key message and contemplation of finding the tools of expression. Thus, the message of the work, the formalities of development and the methods of expression can be used to investigate the genuine features of "me.";많은 예술가들이 그러하듯 본인은 진정한 자신의 모습을 바로 이해하고 표현해내기 위해 노력한다. 다양한 사람들과의 만남을 가지며 살아가는 우리들에게 타인과의 관계는 자아를 탐구하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 비슷한 영향 아래에 생활하는 사람들은 서로 생각을 공유하고 행동하기 때문에, 누구와 만나고 지속적인 관계를 이루고 있는가는 스스로의 모습을 살펴보기에 좋은 자료가 되는 것이다. 그러므로 자아를 찾고자 하는 시도는 곧 타인들과의 만남 속에서 ‘나’의 모습을 발견하고 분석하는 노력으로 이어질 수 있다. 본인은 관계하는 삶속에서, 타인에게 대하는 태도, 낯선 환경에서 보여지는 행동, 그리고 ‘나’를 표현하는 방식을 통해 드러나는 모습들을 진정한 자아로 인식하고, 이를 작품으로 표현하고자 한다. 작품은 작가의 내적 자아의 투영이다. 다시 말하자면 작가의 무의식적인 심리상태를 고스란히 반영한다는 것이다. 본인의 작품에서는 스스로가 인식하는 자아, 타인들과의 관계 속에서 드러나는 모습들, 그리고 보여주고 싶지 않은 깊은 곳의 내적 자아가 표출되기 때문에, 본인의 개인적인 심리상태가 큰 비중을 차지한다. 첫 번째로 Ⅱ장에서는 작업에서 기초가 되는 인간관계 심리학을 탐구하고자 한다. 새로운 곳으로 이동하는 개인적인 경험에서 비롯된 낯선 사람들과의 관계형성에서 드러나는 자아를 심리학을 기초로 설명할 것이다. 그리고 초현실주의 작가들의 작업에서 무의식적으로 드러나는 내적자아의 표현방법에 대해 탐구하고, 스스로를 보호하기 위한 자기 방어적 태도에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 그리고 Ⅲ장은 작품에서 중요한 역할을 하는 형식적인 전개를 살펴볼 것이다. 작가들에게 있어서 표현하고자 하는 바를 어떻게 전달할 것인가는 큰 고민이며, 작업을 시작하는 원동력이 되기도 한다. 본인에게 작품을 함에 있어서 무슨 재료를 사용할 것이며, 어떠한 방식으로 어느 장소에 설치할 것인가는 어려운 숙제이기도 하거니와 동시에 매력적인 요소로 작용하기도 한다. 따라서 Ⅲ장에서는 작품에서 ‘내적자아’를 표현하기 위한 형식적 전개 방식을 살펴보고자 한다. 크게 작품의 형식적인 방법에 따라 주변 환경에서 사물들의 수집하는 방식, 텍스트의 사용, 그리고 다양한 재료의 탐구로 나누어 작품의 전개를 설명하고, 비슷한 매체 혹은 형식을 가지는 작품들을 탐구하면서 본인의 작품과 비교분석하고자 한다. 또한 Ⅳ에서는 본인의 작품들을 보다 심도 있게 살펴보면서 작품 속에서 본인이 무언가를 보호하고, 누군가와 관계하고자 하는 예술적 행위가 가지는 궁극적인 목표에 대해서 탐구하고자 한다. 본인은 사람들과의 관계 속에서도 본연의 모습을 그대로 보여주는 것이 아니라 반투명한 막으로 가려진 모습을 드러내고자 한다. 막 속에 가려진 본인은 스스로를 차단하지만 내부의 모습을 희미하게나마 볼 수 있게 만든다. 이러한 개인적인 성향은 작품에 그대로 반영된다. 작품에서 사용된 사물들과 그림의 표면은 반투명한 막에 가려져 보호되고 있지만, 누군가에 의해 그 내부가 보여지기를 기다리고 있는 듯하다. 이러한 실제의 자아의 모습과 작품을 통해서 드러나는 개인적인 모습들은 유사성을 가진다. 이렇듯 본인은 자아의 모습을 실제 생활에서의 행동에서 뿐만 아니라, 작업을 해나가는 과정 속에서 발견한다. 그러므로 자아의 발견이란 본질적인 내적 탐구를 통해서만이 아니라, 작업을 위한 고뇌 속에서 발견되기도 하고, 이는 또한 진정한 자아를 보다 더 깊이 탐구할 수 있는 계기를 마련해준다. 따라서 본론의 마지막 장에서는 스스로 진정한 모습을 찾아가는 과정이자 결과이기도 한 작품들을 제작년도 순으로 개별분석하고, 작품에서 드러내고자 하는 ‘나’의 모습을 보다 깊이 고찰하고자 한다. 본인의 생각을 표현하고 전달하기 위해 작업을 하는 것은 자아를 탐구하고 인식하는 과정 중 하나이다. 내적 자아를 인식하고자 하는 노력 뿐 아니라, 작업에서 드러내고자 하는 개념을 찾아내고, 그를 어떻게 표현할 것인가를 고뇌하는 과정 또한 진정한 자아를 찾고자 하는 노력이라 할 수 있겠다. 따라서 작업에서 드러내고자 하는 개념, 형식적 전개, 표현되는 방식을 살펴봄으로써 결과적으로 ‘나’ 라고 일컬을 수 있는 진정한 모습에 대해 탐구하고자 한다.
