Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among the parenting of parents, their children's emotional regulation and peer acceptance and the mediating effect of their children's emotional regulation between parenting and their peer acceptance. The subjects in this study were 434 boys and girls in their fifth and sixth grades at three different elementary schools located in Incheon and Gyeonggi Province. The questionnaire method was utilized to gather data. The parenting of their parents was assessed using Kim Moon-Jeong(2003)'s scale, which was a modified version of Park Young-Ae(1995)'s Parenting Scale for Children. The children's emotional regulation was evaluated by Kang Ji-Heun(2004)'s inventory that utilized Kang Ji-Heun(2002)'s adapted version of Shields and Cicchetti(1997)'s Emotional Regulation Checklist(ERC). As for assessment of peer acceptance, Yang Won-Kyung(1999)'s inventory that was based on Coie and Dodge(1983)'s Positive/Negative Peer Domination was employed. All of questionnaires were rated by children themselves. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regressions. The major findings of this study about were as follows: First, out of the subfactors of parenting involving parental warmth/acceptance, parental permission/reglect and parental rejection/restriction, only parental warmth/acceptance had a significant impact on peer acceptance. The children who perceived their fathers and mothers to be warmer and more acceptive showed higher in peer acceptance. Second, better emotional regulation led to better peer acceptance. Third, children who considered their fathers and mothers to be warmer and more acceptive were better at emotional regulation, and those who deemed their fathers to be more permissive and more laissez-faire lagged behind in that regard. Finally, the children's emotional regulation didn't play any mediating role between parenting and their peer acceptance. As for the relative influence of the parenting and emotional regulation on peer acceptance, paternal warmth/acceptance had the greatest impact on that. This study attempted to look into the close relationship among parenting, children's emotional regulation and peer acceptance, and ascertained that parental warmth/acceptance and children's emotional regulation were two crucial factors to improve children's peer acceptance. The meaning of this study lies in confirming the relative influence of parenting and children's emotional regulation and identifying parenting as one of vital elements to predict peer acceptance.
