This thoris is to analyzo chronologically the turkish Kinicturo peinting of the Islanic period, finding out its oharaoteristies as woll as natural, historical and cultural backgrounds of Turkey, upon which such characteristics were foundel, and also to analegize the Turkish aestheitc comception out of the □□□□ □□ □rts under which influence the Turkich painting foll. The rea-sen for choozing the painting of the specifie aroa of Turkey is that Turkey, Located about halfway goographically between the west and the Orient, has been the conter of historical turnoils, pnabling itself to withoss the conflicting elemonts of the cultures of the West and the East. Another reason is that Turkey effors an idoal place from which one can find out or fool visually the artitstic elements of Central Asia at this time when it is practically impossible □□ trevel the Centrall Asian area or the Manchurian Tungus area of the northern tribes or to collect materials relating to those areas. It is noted that the Turkish people was an Asian nemed which moved to what is Turkey today from Central Asia, that Turkey is in the □□me linguistic sphere as ours, and that Tukey is a place where Aisatic elements take firaer roots than in other place. Winature is a kina of painting adopting the gouach method of painting and using opaque weter colors mixed with pigments as naterials. The Turkish people began to leave the Turkestan area of Central Asia in the EighthCentury and sattled dom on the Anatolis Peninsula where the present Republic of Turkey sits after serveral centurios' wandering all over the Islam area. Here, aseinilated into the cultural influence of the ancient civilizetion of Anetolia, nagely the culture of Greece, Roma and Byzantino, and faced with restriction in the w way of their thinking within the boundary of the Isalanic history and religion, the Turkish people steated a peculicar stristic moulding pattern upon their traditional painting nature influenced by the natural, environmental ponditions of the ares. Therefore, the sphete of the Turkish uinieturo ombodies whole nieture paintings painted by Turkish people in all the Isaln are oxtending from Contral Asia to Anatole regardlese of the eras, before or after the Islam Age. Since miniature taking the form of illustrations is closely linked to Iitsrature, niniature, for conveniences's sake, was classified into six stages depending on agea and charecteristics in consideration of the history of the Turkish Literature. The Turkish miniature before Islam originates in the Eighth Century miniature of Uighur Turkey in Central Asia. The miniatures of this are were characterized by a Uighur pattern with a touch of Buddhistic murals influenced by the ini□rures of Manichaeism as well as by the method of Chinese Painting. The method of pertrait painting, Considered best among paintings, had approfound impact upon Islanic miniatures in the later yours when the Turkish people converted the molves to Islanism and behaved in the Isala□ world. The Turkish people, who were belliocse, remlistic and ambitious in politics, moved westwerd from Central Asia into the world of Islam, where they took the hegemony in term of painting among the indigenous people whose painting had. hardly developed in the face of religious persecution of Islam. Thus, miniature of the Uighur pattern of Seljuk Turks flourished. The active and outstanding Turkish people, with the Islam world as their stage, developed their painting to a point of universal level, giving birth to the miniature of the Islamic period with unique characteristics. However, no independent collections of the miniatures of the Islamec age had ever been prepared. All the miniatures handed down to date take the form of illustrations in religious books, literary pieces, poems, medical books, travelogues, Beginning in the final years of the 15th Century, there emerged precious persian miniatures based upon the miniatures of the Islamic period. In the meantime, the Seljuk Turks who settled down on Anatolia left behind a lot of artistic works including miniatures while safeguarding the aesthetic virtues□ of the Turkish people. It was about a time to prepare for entering into the classic period of the Ottoman Empire when miniature paintings reached peak. The subjects and method. of miniatures could hardly depart from the original Uighur Turkish pattern. The Ottoman Turkish Empire which rose after the fall of Seljuk Turkey conquored Istanbul of the Byzantine Empire putting the entire world. of Islam under its control, Istanbul which by then became one of the wealthiest cities in the world, turned into a, cradle for artistic activities, leading to a peak period for miniature paintings. It was in this period that miniatures were painted in large amounts in the form of historical records, portraits, festival scenes, etc. based upon ultra-realism and under the influence of the perspective consturction of the West as well as the Islanmic artistic elements embodying the aesthetic touches of Arab, Persia and Turkey. In the 18th Century, miniatures came under strong influence of the splendor Persian paintings and the third-dimensional method of the Western paintings, finding themselves in an age of postclassicism. Soon thereafter, however, miniatures disappeared in the face of the onrushing influential Western mil paintings, In general, the Turkish miniatures of the Islamic period. show two major characteristics: one is that they existed within the great frame of Islamic arts incorporating the aesthetic senses of various peoples; and the other, the unique aesthetic elements of the Turkish people. The basic aesthetic sense of the Turkish miniatures thus formed contain various formative characteristics. Their arts, born of the very complicated.,world of Islam and of the peculiar national feature of being nomand, are hard to be examined properly from the aesthetic point of view fixed in the stability of the way of thinking, surroundings an6 history. The basic aesthetic conception of Turkish painting lies between the West and the East. Michalengelo who represents an extreme expression of the Western spirit in art shows his passionate preoccupation with the human body as the sufficing symbol of world providence. In absolute contrast are the Chinese landscapes of the classic period, in which man is but a traveller, small and insignificant beside the towering crags and cloudy peaks. The artists' aim in Chinese landscapes is to ]hint at the whole vision of the living universe, with its endless change and streaming energies in which the life of man is included. In Turkish painting, however, man and the doings of man are in the foreground always: the One Being whom precedes all others and knows itself as Nature yet amidst the multiforming of Nature reasserting its unity in Man. In the conception of space, the Chinese art shows the vision of an unlimited and all-enclosing space. But what is presented to the eye in Turkish painting is an enclosed space, with the theater of the events portrayed. It ignores shadow, and unlike the European school, it does not seek expression through ideas of mass. Turkish painting is harmonized. amidst discordance, with a nature likened, for example, to a carpet drawn on a ground plan, Turkish artists, ignoring any intellectual grasp of the structure of things, paid no respect to atmospheric effect or light and shade, while simply trying to give dramatic effect using strong and beautiful colors with emphasis on aesthetic harmony and overall formation, Their works were an art which owned nothing to the study of anatomy or the study of perspective. Their works took the form of illustrations. Rather than expressing their creativeness in the free selection of subjects, (they had to choose subjects in consideration of the taste of their sponsors who were royal families or rich People) the painters exhibited creativeness in the methods of painting in the course of drawing repititious illustrations for poems, literary works, bibles and historical records. The painters of Turkish miniatures contributed a colorful chapter to the history of world paintings by developing an artistic sphere of their own using clear and pure colors with their gifted talents polished with exquisite, stylish feelings and peculiar decorative instinct. As a follow-up program, it is believed important to compare the characteristics and formative arts of Turkish painting with the folk paintingse of our peopel who are in the Uralo-Altaic group of languages and also to compare the murals of the Turfan area of Central Asia and of Tun-huang with those of Koguryo, thus studying the connection among Turkey, Central Asia and Korea.-
