Music has a religious origin, and has been closely related to religion from the beginning of civilization. Western music started with the of the Christian church. The basie of church music was established by Troparia cemposed for Psalms sung by Israel during the Old Testament era. Pope Gregory I reformed the church modes and thus contributed greatly to a new style of music for the chunch, now called Gregorian chant. Gregorian chant is a unique style of music use in the Roman Catholic church, its accentuation being that of the Latin lyrics used for unaccompaniec unison choral singing. It was the first musical form used for church worship. However, as polyphony was developed and pipe organs established in every monastery and Catholic chuck from the 10th century, Gregorian chant gradually disappeared in the Catholic church as unaccompanied music fell into disuse. While large-scale choral works accompanied by instruments were introduced in the Baroque era, a movement to revive Gregorian chant arose aroung the Solemnes Monastery at the end of the 18th century. The head of the monastery, Gueranger, and a Switzerland Professor, Peter-Wager, initiated a movement to sing the Gregorian chant, but in a modernized form. The Requiem, as a particular form of Mass, is a song for the dead and called ""Requiem"" becaus e it starts ""Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine"" in the Introit of the service for the dead in Latin. The words of the Ordinary of the Mass not being changed according to the church season are used, except for the Gloria and Credo. Requiems began to be composed as separate works in the 16th century with Palestrina, di Lasso and Victoria as representative composers. The words of the Proper of the Mass, different for each day or purposer, could not be used for a musical composition. However ""Dies irae, dies illa"" (Oh Angry Day and gruesome day) was inserted following the Tract as a Sequence in the 17th century. In the Requiem of the 17th century, such composers as Biber and Kerll was contrapuntal techniques. In the 18th century, the Requiem was composed for chorus and orchestra by composers such as Jommeli ana Mosart. In the 19fh cenfury, the Requiem tended to be a dramatic musical work, and composers included Berlioz, Verdi, Faur?, Ovo?ak, Bruekner and Brahms. Britten and Durufl? are two composers of the Requiem in the 20th century. The Latin Requiem is music for the dead to be used in a worship service. However, Brahus' German Requiem was composed for soprano and baritone soloists, chorus and orchestra, and its words were selected from among the words of the German Bible translated by Martin Luther in L1537. This work was composed, not for use in worship, but for concert use. It is considered that Brahms motivation to compose this work arose from the fact that Sch?tzs ""German burial mass"" and ""German Mass"" and Schubert's ""Geman language mass"" existed, or after seeing the title ""German Requiem"" used for Schumann's funeral. He was inspired by the music of Sch?tz, Schubert and Bach after due consideration of human destiny and the hope of heaven. In the orchestration, worthy of note is that an organ is used and pedal points are well utilized in Brahms' usual exceent technique. Accordingly, he expressed the particular feeling of gravity necessary to a Requiem. Although he did not use the ""Dies irae"", the 6th movement for baritone and chorus shows a similar approach to writing as other composers of the Romantic era employed for the ""Dies irae"" The whole work is redolent of the abundant color of 19th century harmony and this music is wholly typieal of the style of Brahms.;문명의 시초로부터 현대에 이르기까지 음악은 종교적 기원을 갖고 밀접한 관계를 맺어 왔으며 서양 음악은 기독교 교회 음악에서 비롯되었다.
