가면의 조형성에 관한 연구

Abstract

現在까지 韓國假面에 對한 硏究는 主로 民俗學的, 國文學的인 측면인 劇과 舞에 비친 時代的 상황변천과 人物性格의 表現에 대한 硏究가 실시되어온 반면 假面의 形態的 造形性 및 美學的 特性에 대하여는 그 硏究가 미약한 實情이다. 假面은 첫째 變化되고, 둘째, 일정기간동안 지속되어 왔고, 셋째, 개개의 독특, 고유한 양상을 띠었으며, 넷째, 현재까지 그 맥락은 이어 오고 創造까지도 되는 신축성을 지니고 있다는 特性을 내포하기 때문에 本 硏究에서는 假面의 근원과 변천에 따른 몇가지 類型에 對한 고찰을 通하여 假面의 本體, 形態的 造形性과 假面에 나타나는 土着信仰과 外來文化의 영향, 風土的 自然環境에 따른 有機的인 관련성을 밝히고 아울러 傳統假面이 지닌 民族 고유의 造形性을 분석, 고찰함으로써 現代彫刻의 새로운 자극원이 되고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 本 硏究의 內容은 첫째 假面의 本質에 관한 고찰을 通하여 가면의 意義와 東·西洋의 一般的 假面의 흐름을 밝히고자 하였으며, 둘째 假面의 기원과 歷史的 背景, 셋째 시대변천에 따른 가면의 類型을 分類·說明하였으며 넷째 가면의 地域的 造形性에 對한 연구와 재료 및 表現技法에 관한 分析으로 韓國假面의 造型的 特性을 論하였다. 硏究方法은 H. Taine의 예술이해의 方法論을 適用시켜 分析·檢討하였다. 첫째, 선천적 또는 유전적으로 구비된 인간의 기질과 신체의 소질인 "종족"과 관련하여 한국인 고유의 해학성을 고찰하고, 둘째 그 종족을 둘러싼 자연적 또는 사회적환경인 "의적상태의 總和" 관련하여 반도라는 자연환경이 가져다주는 風土的 造形性을 把握하고, 셋째, 과거시대의 작가 또는 思潮가 후기의 작가와 사조에 영향을 미치는 "시대"의 問題에 관련하여 假面의 시대변천에 따른 유형을 檢討하였다. 本 硏究의 結論은 韓國의 假面은 전통적 藝術로서 土着信仰과 生活環境, 時代的 상황과의 有機的인 結合으로 民衆의 藝術로 發展되었으며, 어느나라에서도 볼 수 없는 □의 使用으로 人工的이기 보다는 자연스러움을, 精致보다는 소박함을, 기교보다는 무기교의 造形美를 구사하였다. 또한 地域的 造形性으로 韓國의 북부지방은 色·形이 남부지장은 線이 主調이고, 중부지방은 形, 色, 線의 조화로 반도적 風土性이 多樣性의 統一 즉, 精齊된 形, 淸楚한 色, 流麗한 線의 統一的이고, 詣謔的이며, 簡潔과 純眞性을 추구하는 樂天的인 自然主義를 基本特色으로 하고 있다. ;The studies on Korean Masks have, until now, mostly been approached form the Korean folkore and literature viewpoint. In other words, most research efforts have emphasized the social changes reflected on the drama and dances and the expressions of the personal characters. On the other hand, little has been studied about the formative and aesthetical characteristics of the masks. The masks has several characteristics; it represents the change, has existed for a certain period of time, has it's own individual and original forms and lastly, possesses the possibility of continual creation as well as it's continuity. By considering several types of masks which differ in their origin and subsequent developments, we investigate, in this work, the essence of masks, their formative characters, the influence of the native religions and foreign cultures on them and their sysematic interrelations arising form different endemic natural environments. We also investigate the formative characters of the traditonal masks unique to the Korean people. Through this, we hope to provide a stimulus to the modern Korean sculpture. The organization of this thesis is as follows. Firstly, we elucidate the significance of the masks and the evolution of the eastern and western masks by studying the nature of them. Secondly, we discuss the origin and historical backgrounds of them. Thirdly, we classify and explain various types of masks resulted form social chahges. And lastly, we discuss the formative characteristics of the korean masks by studying their regional aspects and analyzing their materials and expressional techniques. The method of this study is based on the methodology, following three factors are influences on the understanding of the arts. Firstly, the races; they possesses their own natures and qualities hereditarily, secondly, the generalization of the exernal condition, that is natural or social environments enclosed their races, and lastly, the period; influence of the past writer or trend of thoughts. By these factors, we discuss the endemic humour of Korean people, clarify the endemic formative characteristics resulted form the natural environments, and investigate the periodical backgrounds of Yi-Dynasty. We conclude that the Korean masks are a form of traditional arts; have evolved into an art of populance through the systematic intermix of the native religions, living conditions and the social environments; are more natural and unsophiscated than those of other contries because of their unique material ""Bak""; and possess the beauty of simplicity rather than that of delicacy. We also conclude that the peninsular nature of Korea have influenced them toward the harmonization of the varieties resulting in an unified composition of refined forms, neat and clean colors and fluent lines. Therefore, the basic characters of the Korean masks are their dynamic and humorous expressions based upon the facts and their optimistic naturalism pursuing the simplicity and the naivety.
