- Abstract
- As Herbert Read says, the aesthetic sensibility of the poet is the essential element that constitutes the poetry, when we analyze the poetry in respect of the aesthetics. The vitalirt of the artistic work is said to be the delicate balance(or tension) between the aesthetic sensibility and the intellectual or emotional object in the society.
In case of our poetry, we can choose one among these three, 1) A poet can keep in touch with the tradition, by studying the traces of the historical progress. 2) A poet can make it his own what he learns from the western culture, by accepting it actively. 3) A poet can get over this crisis, by creating original sensibility. In this case, he must resist to the established conventon to create the new convention in accordance with thr contemporary consciousness.
The traditional national poertry (1) is the poetry of Kim So-Wol, and Lee Sang presents the example who succeeded in transplanting the characteristics of the western culture (2). It is the problem imposed on the poets of today to create the orgianl sensibility (3).
I make a small chart in this treatise to interpret the dulistic constitution of modern poetry.

For the study of the Korean modern poetry, it is required to take the modern history into consideration. This is not simply owing to the proposition that the poetry always reflects the history of the age as its background. Rather, it is to emphasize that we have to study the Korean modern poetry in the consideration of the special charachteristics of our modern history, as everybody knows, under the influence of western civilization, it constitutes our modern history to seek to transform the traditional society into the weatern modern society by reorganizing the whole constitutions of our society. Consequently, our modern history has undergone the great conflict between Korean traditional culture and western modern culture. This conflict has not ended. Still it remains in the present day. So we can fing this conflict and much confusion caused by this conflict in poet's consciousness, artistic conception and poetic receptivity of the Koreans.
