나무 표피(樹皮)를 통한 생명 이미지 표현

Abstract

태초로부터 인간은 각각 고유한 특성과 이미지를 지니고 있는 수많은 자연물들에 매혹되어 왔는데, 그중에서도 나무는 고대에서 현대에 이르기까지 그 조형적 아름다움으로 인해 인간의 심상을 자극하여 무한한 표현을 불러 일으켰다. 본 연구는 나무의 ‘표피’라는 소재로 자연을 시각적으로 접근하여 그 구성을 이루는 조형요소를 파악하고 추출하여 조형언어로 이야기하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 이론적 연구로 성경(Bible)의 생명나무·선악과나무로 인한 생명의 질서, 창조주의 구원 과정까지 함축하고 있는 나무의 형이상학적 의미를 연구하였다. 그 다음으로는 동양철학인 오행(五行) 사상에서의 나무를 연구하여 만물의 생성과 관련된 생명의 순환 시스템에 관해 살펴보고 연구의 토대를 마련하였다. 나무는 생명을 가지고 성장하면서 외피에 일정한 무늬를 남기며 조형적인 요소를 구성한다. 나무표피가 가진 조형성을 살펴본 후 이러한 조형 특성들을 이용하여 반복과 중첩, 해체와 재구성으로 화면 공간을 구성하였다. 또한 내적 심상에 의한 형상을 표현하고자 하여 투사(投射)와 연상 작용, 직관적 재해석 과정을 설명하였다. 기법적 연구에 있어서는 탁본(拓本)과 빠삐에 꼴레(papier colle), 선염(渲染)과 수묵 드로잉에 관한 연구를 통해 작품 제작에 도움을 얻고자 하였다. 본인 작품을 분석함에 있어서는 나무 표피 이미지를 표현하는 과정에서 나타난 화면의 구조와 조형적 특성, 재료기법 등 작품 제작의 과정과 특징을 구체적으로 서술하였다. 이들은 나무의 생명을 내포하고 지켜주는 표피에 대한 경외의 기록이며, 한결같아 보이지만 성장함으로 늘 변화하는 표피를 종이 위에 머무르게 하는 과정이었다. 본 연구자는 작품 제작을 통해 나무의 이미지를 조형화 하는 과정에서 나무가 그 자체만으로도 충분히 조형적 요소를 갖추고 있음에도 작가의 주관적인 변형과 재구성을 통해 무한한 창조의 가능성을 가진 소재라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 연구과정에서 탄탄한 이론적 뒷받침과 깊이 있는 조형세계의 필요성을 절감하게 되었고, 앞으로의 창작활동에 이것들을 확실히 갖추고 더욱 창의성 있는 연구와 방법을 시도하여 새롭고 발전된 작품 세계를 열어나가고자 한다.;Humans were fascinated by the natures which have their own peculiar and special characteristics. Through art history from ancient to modern time, the tree has been the most human-friendly natural component. It stimulates the human’s emotions to express their art, especially the figurative art, with great impressions. In this research, the author attempts to analyze the characteristics of the outer layer of the tree that have caught human’s interests in terms of visual approaches. To understand the metaphysical philosophy, two trees in the Bible, the fruit of Tree of Knowledge and the Life Tree, are exampled for clarifying the order of nature and involved meanings of creation and salvation. The ideology, the Oriental philosophy of the Five Primary substance, which used to support the basis of the nature. The tree is a example of their findings when the theory is determined for circulating system of nature which is related with the creation of all beings. The tree has vitality and grows up with leaves which change its outer cover with a routine circulation of schedule. These patterns are used in a figurative element. The researcher observes these figurative elements and has compositions with repeat and reiteration, dissolution and re-composition. Also, to comply with an expression for its diverse effects, the inner image is used for explaining the process of intuitional re-interpretation. This research is to achieve a comprehension of producing works through the technical research of a rubbed copy, papier colle, gradation and ink drawing. In analyzing my own works, this researcher concretely described the process and the characteristics of the production such as the structure of a screen, formative characteristics and material techniques that appeared during the process of expressing the image of the bark of trees. These were the record of the respect for the bark that contains and protects the life of a tree and were the process of capturing the bark that seems to be constant yet changes as it grows on the paper. Through the process of molding the image of trees, this researcher discovered that trees themselves, have sufficient formative elements, and the elements can be the object of creation with boundless possibility by the subjective transformation and reorganization of the artist. The researcher also felt keenly the necessity of solid theoretical supports in the field of the formative arts , and will attempt creative ways of research to open a new and more developed works of the formative arts.
