일상사물과의 조우

Abstract

이 시대는 물질보다 더 가치가 있는 것들을 망각 하게 하고, 인간 역시 스스로를 이해 타산적으로 바라보게 한다. 이런 현대사회의 메커니즘 속에서는 한 사람의 기능이 소진되었다 싶으면 다른 사람으로 바로 대체 되는, 인간조차도 쓰이고 버려지는 사물과 다름없다. 살아가기가 너무나 힘들어진 현대사회에서 숨죽인 채 지금을 살아가는 우리들은 별 존재감이 없이 놓여있는 일상용품들 같아 보인다. 하지만 끊임없이 생산되는 일용품들의 특성은 마치 생명력을 지닌 동 식물처럼 스스로 증식 되어 우리의 생활 속으로 퍼져나가는 것 같은 상상을 하게 해 준다. 어린 시절, 마당안의 동 식물들을 통해 꼬리를 물던 상상속의 이미지들은 회상 속에서 존재하게 되었지만 우연히 보게 된 곰팡이 핀 물건들은 어린 시절의 경험들을 되살아나게 하여 그것들이 마치 살아있는 생물이 된 것처럼 느끼게 해 주었다. 흙과 나무 같은 자연물을 만질 기회보다 공산품을 접할 기회가 많은 이 시대의 사람들에게 일상용품들은 새로운 자연물이 되어가고 있는 것 같다. 일상의 사물들에게서 살아있는 듯 한 기운을 느끼고 상상하는 나의 작업은, 무생물에게도 영이 있고 사물들이 감정을 가지고 있다고 믿어, 그들과 대화했던 원시사회 사람들의 세계관인 애니미즘과도 맥락을 같이 하는 것이다. 상상은 어떤 것을 변화 시킬 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있다. 우리들이 일상용품에 관해 가지는 일반적인 생각 대신, 그들에게서 느껴지는 기운들에 관한 단상들이 모이면 그것은 어느덧 살아서 움직이고 있는 일상사물들의 이야기가 된다. 또 모여진 단상들처럼 여러 가닥의 철선으로 그들에게서 뿜어지는 기운들을 엮어 나가면 상상의 대상이 되었던 일상용품들은 여기저기서 뿌리를 내리고 가지를 뻗어가며 자라나게 된다. 일상용품들로부터 뻗어 나온 철선은 길고 짧게 공간을 나누고 조명에 의해 생성된 그들의 그림자가 공간을 점유하면, 우리가 이동함에 따라 시야에 들어오는 우리의 이미지와 그림자도 자연스레 그것들과 더해지고 분리된다. 작업의 이미지와 우리의 그림자가 뒤섞여 생소하게 변한 그곳은 시 공간을 초월한 장소로 느껴지게 된다. 이런 공간은 사람들이 가지고 있는 인습적인 생각들을 깨버리게 해주며 인습적인 생각들로부터 벗어나는 것은 늘 주변에 있어서 간과되는 대상과 사회 속에서 사물취급 되는 인간의 미미한 존재감을 확장하는 장치가 된다. 기계처럼 돌아가는 생활에서 벗어나 우리 스스로와 주변을 환기하기 위해 미지의 장소로 떠나길 원하듯이 일상의 사물들에게서 어떤 기운이 발산되고 있는 생경하고, 비현실적인 풍경 속으로 여행을 하게 되면, 일상사물들이 에너지를 분출하며 가지와 뿌리를 끊임없이 증식하고 있을 어떤 세계를 상상하게 된다. 이 낯선 공간속으로의 여행은, 스스로를 사물로 지칭하게 된 현실으로 부터 벗어나 이 공간속에서, 작업과 우리의 이미지들이 분리되고 또 융화되는 유동적인 상태를 경험하게 함으로써 우리에게 내재된 또 다른 모습을 발견 하게 한다.;This age makes people forget those things that have more values than materials do, and even makes humans see themselves as purely selfish entities. In this modern age of mechanism, when a person’s function or energy is considered almost exhausted, such a person shall be replaced by other individual right away; thus human beings tend to become the things that are designed only for functioning, exactly the same as the things that will be discarded after use. In the age that has become too hard and hostile for humans to live, I imagine life energy from daily necessities which don’t have a great sense of existence, like us living in this age, just quietly. Those things in our surroundings that don’t have a sense of existence are identical to us who are living in today’s world. However, continuous mass production of daily necessities could be imagined just like a self-proliferation, for there is vital force, and it is vital force that sustains those things. Even through a minor thing like mold attached to those articles that happened to be discovered in our everyday life, we would feel, as if daily necessities would have turned out to be living things. In this age when there are much more opportunities to deal with industrial goods than to touch soil and grass, the daily necessities shall be practically new natural products. My works, which have been carried out having felt life energy from the daily necessities, shall be in the same context as animism, the belief that even inanimate things are endowed with living souls, and communicating with them as if they had sensations and emotions like living things. Imagination has power to change things. While collecting short imaginations that carry vital energy ejected from the things, rather than the general thinking concerned with daily necessities, such a series of collection comprises a story of vitality of living things before I am aware of it. While plaiting number of strips of iron wires, those daily necessities that have become the object of imagination, like fragmentary thoughts that are collected, turn out to be a living thing having vital force to grow pushing roots down into the ground and spreading branches. I indulge myself completely in the world of imagination, and express the animated world through works. The space where the life of inanimate object has grown is unrealistic. Within this boundary, things shall occupy space using branches, roots, and tentacles that were formed by plaiting iron wires. They divide the space with narrow lines and shades that constitute themselves, or harmonize them. Images that created in this manner comprise unrealistic space. The combination between the familiar things that have been depicted by the images of life, like the roots of the living things and its branches as well as that have been expressed by weaving iron wires, and the heterogeneous images shall be crude things having transcended time and space. The unrealistic space filled up by their energy will make us imagine those different existences that haven’t been revealed yet. As I set out on a journey in order to get out of quotidian life, I shall travel into unrealistic and crude sceneries through my artistic works. Amid such spaces, we awake from our mundane illusion, and discover the moment of existence - what we have been missing.
