시선에 의한 대상의 인식변화

Abstract

Humans are social beings living surrounded by others from birth, and life is an endless series of meeting others. While living a life, humans belong to different groups, in which they keep meeting and parting with a great number of others by one’s own will or others'. To humans, the existence of others affects them even before they recognize their own identity, and has become something I cannot separate from my life at any moment. However, we come to have a question of whether we understand others, important beings to humans, appropriately. At some moments, the existence of others gives us a new feeling or we see a different side from familiar people, as well as we do from common objects. We think we are interpreting and recognizing them properly with an objective and absolute standard, but out standard of cognition is not that absolute. This paper examines the way how humans recognize the existence of others, who affect human life in great ways and with whom humans make various relationships. When we observe others in our daily life, no other ways are as direct as ‘vision.’ The sense of sight is most effective among human’s senses. However, in this study, it was examined from a skeptical viewpoint if the visual act of ‘‘seeing,’’ the most basic way to recognize others, works really purely or not when we appreciate others. Also, different factors affecting the process of cognition were researched, and it was considered whether we could truly understand and recognize the others through our vision and perception. Human’s daily life consists of repetition of numerous experiences, through which we form our own unique values, ideas, and stereotypes. These value systems and stereotypes from experiences and life have the biggest influence on our viewpoint of others. In addition, we cannot exclude outside conditions, such as the environment and people around us. Therefore, when we recognize some objects or others through the tool of vision, various elements affect our eyes, so even when we recognize the same object, the results of recognition are all different. This paper aims at making new images by symbolizing "vision,” an abstract concept with others as the subject of expression, the object to see, and by separating and recombining them, at showing the possibility to interpret a subject differently when it’s recognized through a person’s vision, and at finding and expressing the ways to induce this. As for the theoretical background of this study, phenomenology and epistemology that support the possibility to recognize subjects with various meanings were covered, and as for the study methods, work was done by deconstructing the subjects and by recombining them with various materials. Through this, this study raises questions about the definite standards of recognizing others, and suggests to transit to a new recognition system, which changes and forms itself in a new way.;인간은 태어나면서부터 타인이라는 존재들에게 둘러싸여 살아가는 사회적 존재이며 인간의 삶은 다른 사람들과의 끊임없는 만남의 연속이다. 인생을 살아가며 인간은 여러 집단에 속하게 되는데 그 집단 속에서 자의 혹은 타의에 의해 수많은 타인과의 만남과 이별을 연속하며 삶을 영위하게 된다. 인간에게 있어 타인의 존재는 자기 스스로 정체성을 인식하기도 전부터 인간의 삶에 영향을 미치며 어느 순간에도 내 주변에서 떼어 놓을 수 없는 존재로 자리매김한다. 하지만 이렇게 인간에게 중요한 존재인 타인을 우리는 올바르게 인식하고 있는 것인가에 대해 물음을 갖게 된다. 일반 사물들과 마찬가지로 어느 순간 타인들의 존재가 새롭게 느껴지거나 익숙했던 그들에게서 또 다른 모습을 보게 될 때가 있다. 우리는 객관적이고 절대적인 기준으로 그들을 올바르게 해석하고 인식한다고 생각하지만 우리의 인식 기준은 그리 절대적인 것이 아니다. 본 연구에서는 인간의 삶에 있어 많은 영향을 미치며 서로 수많은 관계를 맺고 살아가는 타인이라는 존재를 우리가 인식하는 방법에 대해 탐구하고자 한다. 우리가 일상 속에서 타인이라는 대상을 관찰할 때 ‘시각’만큼 직접적인 방법도 없을 것이다. 시각은 인간의 인지 중 가장 효율적인 감각이다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 타인을 인식하는데 가장 기본적인 통로인 시각이 대상을 인식할 때 진정 순수하게 작용하는지에 대해 회의적인 태도로 다루어보고 인식과정에 영향을 미치는 것에 어떤 것들이 있는지 연구해봄으로서 우리가 시각과 지각을 통해 타인이라는 대상을 올바르게 이해하고 인식 할 수 있는지에 대해 생각해보았다. 인간의 일상생활은 무수한 경험의 반복으로 이루어지며 이를 통해 우리는 자기 고유의 가치관과 생각, 그리고 그에 따라 얻어지는 고정관념 등을 만든다. 이러한 경험과 삶을 통해 얻어지는 가치관과 고정관념이 타인을 향한 우리의 시선에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요소이다. 또한, 우리의 주변 환경과 주변인 등의 외부적 조건도 빼 놓을 수 없다. 따라서 우리가 대상 또는 타인을 시선이라는 도구를 통해 인식할 때 여러 요소들이 시선에 영향을 미쳐 같은 대상을 인식하더라고 보는 사람들은 각각 다른 인식의 결과물을 갖게 되는 것이다. 그리하여 본 연구에서는 추상적인 개념인 "시선"을 상징화시키고 시선의 대상인 타인을 표현대상으로 삼아 이를 분리하고 재조합함으로써 새로운 이미지를 만들어 하나의 대상이 지각자의 시선을 통해 인식될 때 다양하게 해석되는 가능성을 보여주며 이러한 내용을 유도할 수 있는 방법을 모색하고 표현하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 이론적 배경으로는 대상의 다의적 인식 가능성을 뒷받침해 줄 수 있는 현상학과 인식론에 대해 연구하였고 방법적 측면으로는 대상물의 해체와 다양한 재료에 의한 재조합을 통해 작업이 이루어진다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서는 타인을 인식함에 있어 확정적 기준에 대한 질문을 제기하며 변화하고 새롭게 생성되는 인식체계로의 전이를 제시한다.
